Reference Desk and AskAway Virtual Reference Hours

Effective September 16th to November 29th the hours will be:

Reference Desk:

Monday to Thursday:    12:00 to 4:00
Fridays:                         12:00 to 2:00

AskAway Virtual Reference:

Monday to Thursday:     9:00am – 9:00pm
Friday:                            9:00am – 5:00pm
Saturday:                       11:00am – 5:00pm
Sunday:                         10:00am – 9:00pm

Science Literacy Week in the Library, Sept. 16th – 20th, 2019

Join us at the BCIT Burnaby Campus Library between Sept. 16th – 20th as we celebrate Science Literacy Week.

Science Literacy Week highlights Canada’s outstanding scientists and science communicators from coast-to-coast. The goals are to showcase the excellence and diversity of Canadian science and to show how exciting science is.

Each day we’ll be featuring some of the new technology that is available in the Library. Stop by between noon – 2pm daily for Tech a Day and try out:

  • Oculus Go/Rift
  • Hololens
  • Cozmo Robots
  • Sphero Bolt
  • Arduino Kits
  • Raspberry Pi

If you had fun trying to solve the puzzle to our last Escape Room, be sure to sign up for the all new Escape Room II experience!

All events are free and everyone is welcome!

2:30pm—3:30pm     “Where Does Your Recycling Go” presented by Maria Bushmin (Summit Centre, main floor of the Library)

Want to know where your recycling goes? BCIT Applied Research is conducting research to learn more about the final destination of items after we have placed them in the blue bin.

3:30pm—4:30pm     BCIT’s Energy Oasis Tour presented by Joey Kan (meet In lobby by the Service Desk)

BCIT’s Energy OASIS (Open Access to Sustainable Intermittent Sources) project demonstrates solutions that could be employed to help reduce the impact of fast-charging on the electric grid. The Energy OASIS project integrates photovoltaic panels and Li-Ion energy storage for a Level-3 fast charge electric vehicle charge station within BCIT’s Smart Microgrid system.

Noon—1:00pm         Food for Thought Series : Motivating Young Women and Girls to Enroll and Persist in Computer Science and Technology Education by Mirela Gutica (Summit Centre, main floor of the Library, light lunch provided)

Dr. Mirela Gutica, Program Head Bachelor of Technology Curriculum Leadership, Option Head Diploma Technical Programming, School of Computing and Academic Studies, British Columbia Institute of Technology

Mirela teaches and conducts applied research at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in the School of Computing and Academic Studies. Her background is in computer engineering and technology education. Mirela teaches digital logic design, discrete mathematics, programming and operating systems, and is actively involved in the BCIT community. Her research interests include advanced learning technologies, computer science education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education. She was awarded the BCIT VP Research Seed Fund (2016-2019) to conduct the project entitled “Building Advanced Learning Technologies for Improving Girls’ and Women’s Participation in STEM.”
