October 10, 2017 by Sandra Matsuba Leave a Comment

Name:      Phoebe Luk
Program: Operations Management (OPMT)

What attracted you to becoming a Peer Tutor?
I would like to help my fellow peers in areas which I am comfortable in tutoring so they will feel less stressed about school.

How has tutoring helped you?
I want to gain more experience in talking and communicating with people. I believe if I can be a good tutor then not only can I get a sense of accomplishment, but I can help others as well.

If you could give one piece of advice to a BCIT student what would it be?
Time management is very important to me. This advice was given to me by the previous year’s tutors as well as with BCIT’s intensive timetable. It is very important to manage tasks and homework well to succeed.

What would your dream job be when you leave BCIT?
I want to be a consultant in the operations field.

If you had a free day, how would you  spend it?
I would spend it with my family and friends.

Name:       Catherine Vasseur
Program:   FMGT – Financial Planning

What attracted you to becoming a Peer Tutor?
First of all, it seems very convenient to work on campus. Secondly, I believe I can actually make a difference in other student’s life by improving their experience/education at BCIT.

If you could give one piece of advice to a BCIT student what would it be?
Use your planner! BCIT will keep you very busy. Staying organized will make the ride smooth.

What would your dream job be when you leave BCIT?
It would be to work for an investment firm. I would have my own office, the warm kind for my clients. I would also get to decide on my schedule. I would have lots of independence.

If you had a free day, how would you spend it?
I would start by cooking a royal breakfast and then play video games. I would also make sure to keep some time for a nap or two with my kitten.

IBISWorld – New to BCIT Library!

September 22, 2017 by dgrace Leave a Comment

To assist students and faculty doing business research for their studies and to support entrepreneurship at BCIT, the library has just subscribed to the IBISWorld database. It contains reports that are updated every six months (on average) and cover a large variety of industries including agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, utilities, construction manufacturing, trade and transportation, wholesale, business support, educational services, healthcare, finance, real estate, information, retail industry, arts and recreation, accommodation and food services, pet services and more.
IBISWORLD contains three types of documents – Industry Reports, iExpert Summaries and Business Environment Profiles.
Says Sara Sethna Kandathil, Entrepreneurial Services Manager, BCIT Student Association:
“Having IBISWorld is an excellent resource for the entrepreneurial students we work with across campus. It supplements the existing library resources and databases that we have been referring students to for market research. With IBISWorld providing Canadian industry reports on a range of industries, students can gather relevant information to help them in achieving their business goals.”

Want to know more?

• United States Industry Reports (over 1300 reports)

Deirdre’s Pick

June 7, 2017 by Sandra Matsuba Leave a Comment

Name:       Deirdre Grace

Position:   Librarian, Energy, Environment & Business,

Coordinator, Engagement & Access

Which book did you choose?

My pick is Dodger (and his pick is me) and our pick is A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron.

Can you tell us why you chose this book?

I chose this book because I saw the preview for the movie, and really wanted to see it, but then there was the controversy about possible animal mistreatment during filming, and I felt like it might be better to read the book … the book’s always better than the movie anyway, right?

The book tells the story of a dog’s relationships with the people in his lives and his search for meaning and identity. It’s heartwarming and humorous, and even with a dog narrating through several incarnations it is surprisingly realistic and not corny. I love dogs and I loved this book. Dodger became part of my family when he was five years old, and I don’t know too much about his life before that – I wish he could write a book like this so I’d know more!
