We are proud to share that the BCIT Library has been officially recognized as an Environmental Star in the Green Choices category at the 2025 City of Burnaby Environmental Awards! At a special ceremony held at Burnaby City Hall on June 24, the library was honoured for its leadership within the campus community.

This recognition highlights two key initiatives that exemplify the library’s commitment to sustainability:
- The Seed Library, which encourages biodiversity and sustainable food practices. This project promotes hands-on learning and environmental stewardship by allowing students and staff to borrow and donate seeds. “It is very rewarding to watch a student get excited about growing basil on their windowsill for the first time because of the low barrier offered by the seed library,” says BCIT librarian Alison Griffin.
- Food for Thought, a series of engaging programs that bring people together to explore sustainable teaching practices and climate-responsible choices. These presentations promote collaborative learning and informed action through workshops and guest speakers.
During the award ceremony, Alison Griffin shared: “I am honoured to accept this award on behalf of the library team for their collective efforts.” In addition to managing the Seed Library, Alison Griffin is also involved in many of the sustainability events held in the library. She describes these projects as: “An integral part of campus that provides a place for students to gather, study, and socialize. This also makes it the perfect space to raise awareness about sustainability efforts and goals. We do this by hosting documentaries, pub quizzes, the Food for Thought workshop series, and board game events, all with a sustainability theme.”
The library team remains committed to fostering a culture of sustainability through inclusive, educational programming that empowers its community to make informed and responsible choices. As noted by Matt Greaves FSA Member Engagement Officer, “We know the value that Library resources and initiatives like the Seed Library and Food for Thought events carry. These contributions are regularly utilized and appreciated by our staff and members alike, and they play a meaningful role in fostering learning, community, and sustainability.”
