Celebrating Trees for National Forest Week

September 18, 2023 by Sarah Campbell Leave a Comment

It’s National Forest Week from September 17th – 23rd, and we are celebrating the benefits of trees.

We’ve calculated the carbon sequestration, avoided runoff, pollution removal and canopy area for a number of trees in the Factor Four area. Look for these tags this week to learn more about what each tree does. These benefits were calculated using i-Tree Software.

  • Carbon Sequestration: the kilograms of carbon sequestered every year. Trees reduce carbon in the air by storing it in new growth every year. The value is based on the price of $0.1148 per kilogram.
  • Avoided Runoff: Trees reduce the amount of water that flows into our storm water infrastructure. Runoff is rain that does not get absorbed by either trees or the ground and can lead to flooding or overflowing storm water systems. The value is based on the price of $2.325 per m3.
  • Pollution Removal: Improving air quality by removing pollutants. Trees remove ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). The value is based on $1.49 per kilogram.
