Canadian alternative punk rock legend released his new single “Christo Fascists”

The way we listen to music has been changing today. In the past, we had to buy cassette tapes or music CDs at music stores in order to listen to our favourite songs. However, we don’t have to do that anymore. Currently, it is easier to listen to music because we have the internet and many music applications such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, iTunes, and Spotify. Because of that, I have been listening to many songs from those applications, and there is a song that I would like to recommend to you, to listen to. It is a new single “Christo Fascists” from a Canadian singer-songwriter named “Art Bergmann”

Image from artbergmann.com

Art Bergmann is an alternative punk rock singer-songwriter from Vancouver, British Columbia who reformed Canadian punk rock music in the late ’70s. He started his career playing with 3 punk bands called “the Mount Lehman Grease Band” “the Notorious Smorg Brothers”, and “Young Canadians”. Then, he decided to start his solo career in the late ’80s. In his solo career, he had 10 studio albums, including Crawl with Me in 1988, Sexual Roulette in 1990, Art Bergmann in  1991, What Fresh Hell Is This? in 1995, Design Flaw in 1998, Vultura Freeway in  2000, Lost Art Bergmann in 2009, Songs for the Underclass in 2014, The Apostate in 2016, and Remember Her Name in  2017. Many of his albums have received many music awards. For example, the Album “ What Fresh Hell Is This?” won a Juno award in 1996 for Best Alternative Rock Album.

He has had a very successful career. Even though he is 67 years old today, he still makes good music, and he just released a new single on October 27th, 2020 named “Christo Fascists” from his upcoming album “Late Stage Empire Dementia”. The single talks about super nationalistic fundamentalist Christians in the world, and the song also features Wayne Kramer, one of the great American guitarists from the MC5 band. This song is very exciting with good lyrics and sounds. For those of you who love alternative punk rock, I would recommend for you to listen to this song at https://artbergmann.com/

Jon Bryant live in Vancouver 2020

Music has been a part of my life since I was a kid. I love listening to music and playing the guitar. I started playing the guitar when I was 12 years old. I remember my mom taking me to music school. I didn’t like playing the guitar at the beginning because my fingers would hurt when I played a chord. However, I changed my mind and started playing the guitar seriously because one of my friends suggested I listen to the Thai Indy rock band. When I heard their songs, I really loved it, and I wanted to play the guitar like the guitarist in the band. Since then, Indy rock music has been one of my favourite music genres. I have been listening to many indy rock songs from all over the world, and one of my favourite indy rock artists is “Jon Bryant” from Vancouver.

Nevertheless, I have been searching for news from the music industry in the last two weeks, and I have found that many concerts are coming back in the virtual edition. My favourite movies and series on Netflix during Covid-19 lockdown

After Covid-19 spread in March 2020, countries from all over the world began lockdowns to stop this pandemic. In the same way, Canada and the city of Vancouver also began lockdowns making one international student from Thailand feel bored. Because of the lockdown, many things in the city were closed such as tourist attractions, restaurants, music & sporting events, etc. Therefore, I had the idea to do something new during the pandemic lockdown and begin watching different movies and series on Netflix.

What!!! You’ve never watched movies or television series on Netflix before?

I haven’t! I have never watched movies or series on Netflix before. Normally, I watch movies at the movie theatre because it makes for a more exciting experience than watching movies on my phone. However, movie theatres in the city were closed because of the Covid-19 lockdown, so I had to find new ways to watch movies. So, I decided to try watching movies on Netflix.

I remember when I wanted to watch movies on Netflix, but I did not know how to get my own Netflix account. I asked my brother “ how can I get a Netflix account?”, and he said, “you can apply for one on the Netflix app, but I already have my account, and I can share my account with you if you want”. To be honest, I didn’t know what that means, but I wanted to watch a movie at that time, so I said “yes, I want. Can you please share your account with me.” and he said “yes”.

After he shared his Netflix account, I have watched many movies on Netflix. Moreover, I watch many Netflix series as well.

Therefore, here are some of my favourite movies and series I have watched on Netflix during the Covid-19 lockdown.

“Moneyball”

Image from netflix.com

I wanted to watch this movie when it was in theatres, but unfortunately, I missed it. Therefore, after I got access to the Netflix account from my brother and I saw this movie on the list, I watched it immediately.

The movie is based on the true story of Billy Beane, who was a general manager of the Oakland Athletics in the year 2002. In the movie, Beane and his team had to build a franchise while facing off against much richer baseball teams in the Major league such as the New York Yankees. Because the Athletics had a bad record in the Major league, it caused the franchise to have a limited budget for players. Beane and his team had a very tough time building the franchise. They tried many different ways to improve the franchise, but they couldn’t do it, until Peter Brand, the economist, joined Beane’s team and suggested that Beane use different statistics to analyze players in the franchise. Thus, After Beane used this strategy, the franchise could reach the knockout round in that season and Beane became one of the most popular general managers in Major league baseball.

I loved this movie so much because it wasn’t just about baseball or the biography of Billy Beane, but it also taught about valuation. After I watched this movie, I felt inspired to become an investor. If you love baseball and have a dream to one day become an investor, I suggest you watch this movie on Netflix.

“American Vandal season 1”

Image from amazon.com

This was the first series that I watched on Netflix. After watching only movies on Netflix for a while, I decided to start watching some series as well. As you know, Netflix has many good series, so I started researching for some good Netflix series on different websites, and I found that American Vandal was highly recommended. The series has 2 seasons with a total of 16 episodes. Even though I watched only the first season, it was a good series like many people said.

American Vandal is a parody of true-crime series. In the first season, it is about an investigation of a crime who spray phallic shapes on 27 teacher’s cars by two students named “Peter Maldonado” and “Sam Ecklund”. In the series, many people could have committed the crime and many details made me very confused as to who the real criminal was. Moreover, the series also showed the dark side of both people and society, so I was very interested in every episode until the end.

This series was very exciting for me to watch. If you love this kind of series then you’ll have to think and follow through with the story. I suggest you watch this series, and it is available on Netflix.

“The Last Dance”

Image from basketballforever.com

I was so excited when ESPN announced that they will publish a documentary named “The Last Dance” in 2020 during the pandemic. Moreover, they also published this documentary on Netflix. This was a highlight of my life during the Covid-19 lockdown because I had a chance to see a documentary about one of my favourite basketball players of all time, Michael Jordan.

The Last Dance is a documentary about the 1998 Bulls and Michael Jordan. It was the year that they won their sixth NBA championship, and it was the final year that this iconic roster would play together. This documentary includes 10 episodes that follow the ’98 bulls for the whole season. Moreover, each episode also follows the timeline of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr, and Phil Jackson from their early careers up until their last season with the bulls.

After I watched the last dance, I could say that this is one of the best sports documentary of all time. The last dance tells the story of the ’98 bulls and Michael Jordan perfectly, I was able to feel every moment of their success even though didn’t have an opportunity to see them play in their prime. Moreover, it also shows Michael Jordan’s winning mentality, and it proves why he is the greatest basketball player of all time. As a result, I don’t have anything more to tell you aside from that you should go see this documentary, and you will understand what I am saying.

Finally, although we can go outside and do many activities today, the second wave of Covid-19 is coming soon, so we might have to stay home and lockdown again. If that happens, you can try to watch these movies and series. Besides, for those of you who already watched these movies and series, you can leave a comment below about your thoughts and also suggest your favourite movies and series on Netflix.

My top 5 Canadian athletes in 2020

We have only 2 months left in 2020, and many things have happened this year. We are going through a global pandemic that is affecting many industries around the world, and one of these industries is sports.

Personally, I really love watching sports. I have been watching many kinds of sports since I was a kid such as a soccer, tennis, basketball, badminton, etc. Watching sports is one of my passions in my life. However, because of the global Covid-19 outbreak that began in March 2020 and is ongoing, many sports have been postponed in order to ensure that athletes and fans are staying safe and healthy. Thus, this has become one of the saddest times in my life, and I’m sure that many others are experiencing this sadness and loss as well. Nonetheless, after most sports were suspended for almost 3 months, many sports organisations around the world tried very hard to bring sports back. Recently, they have finally been able to do this. The first sport that I remember seeing was soccer, followed by others such as basketball, tennis, badminton, etc. As a result, my happiness and excitement was coming back again.

Since the return of televised sports, I have been watching them every day. Furthermore, there are many athletes that have had superb performances after returning from the Covid-19 suspension, some of whom are Canadian athletes.

Here are my top 5 Canadian athletes in 2020

5. Denis Shapovalov [Tennis]

Image from USOpen.org

Let’s start with Denis Shapovalov, a Canadian tennis player, who is currently ranked 12th in the world. He is a left-handed tennis player who has an aggressive style on the court as well as an impressive one-handed backhand. He won an ATP title at the Stockholm Open in 2019 and has earned more than five million US dollars in his career. Therefore, he is one of the most popular active Canadian tennis players.

I think that 2020 has been the best year of his career since he turned pro on the ATP tour in 2016. When watching his most recent matches, I notice that he has improved his tennis skills in many different ways such as four-hand & backhand strokes, volley, serve, footwork, etc. He was ranked 10th on September 21, 2020, which is the highest rank he has achieved in his tennis career. Moreover, he also went to the quarter-finals of US open 2020, one of the Grand slam titles, which is the highest round that he has reached in his grand slam career.

Currently, he is one of the best Canadian tennis players. At just 21 years old, Denis Shapovalov is still has a lot of time to develop his tennis skills in his career, and I believe that he has the potential to win a medal in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021, as well as grand slam titles in the next couple of years.

4. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander [Basketball]

Image from tsn.ca

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a Canadian basketball player, is a player for the Oklahoma City Thunder of the NBA. He was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the 11th overall pick in 2018 and then was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers and the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019. He plays shooting guard & small forward positions for the teams and won NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2019.

After he got traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019, media predicted that the Oklahoma City Thunder had only a 0.2 % chance of making it to the 2020 NBA playoffs; this was primarily because the team traded Russell Westbrook and Paul George, two all-stars players, to the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Clippers. However, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his teammates proved them wrong. He and the team had a good overall performance in the 2019/2020 NBA regular season and were able to reach the 2020 NBA playoffs in the 5th position with a 44-28 record. This was an incredible record for the team and him.

Even though he and his teammates lost to the Houston Rockets in the first round of the 2020 NBA playoffs, his notable performance makes me excited for his future. He is only 22 years old, and my hope is that he is able to improve and help the Oklahoma City Thunder find even greater success next season.

3. Jamal Murray [Basketball]

Image from thespun.com

Jamal Murray, a Canadian basketball player, is a player for the Denver Nuggets of the NBA. He was drafted by the Nuggets with the 7th overall pick in 2016. He plays point guard & shooting guard for the teams and won NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2017.

In 2020, After the NBA decided to come back again from the pandemic. They brought 23 NBA teams to play in Disney World, Orlando. Here was the place that Jamal Murray showed every basketball fan around the world that he is one of the best basketball players today. In the 2020 NBA playoffs, Jamal Murray set many records for himself and the team. He helped the team to win the Utah Jazz in the first round after a 3–1 deficit with a career-high 50 points in game 4 & 6. Moreover, He and the Nuggets also won over the Los Angeles Clippers in the western conference semifinal after another 3–1 deficit. The Nuggets became the first team in the NBA that was able to recover from multiple 3–1 deficits in the playoffs.

Even though he and the Nuggets lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the western conference final, I think he has proved that he is one of the best Canadian basketball players, and I’m looking forward to seeing his performance again next season.

2. Brayden Point [Hockey]

Image from nhl.com

Brayden Point, a Canadian hockey player, is a player for the Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning with the 79th overall pick in 2014. He plays center position for the team and won the Stanley Cup in 2020.

I believe there is no word that can explain how incredible Brayden Point was in 2020. Considering that he won the 2020 Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning, he had a very unbelievable season. Moreover, he also had fantastic personal stats such as leading goals in the playoffs (14) as well as scoring the clinching goal in game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals. Although it was unfortunate that he wasn’t named the game’s MVP, his performance was exceptional this season.

This could potentially be the peak in his career, but anything is possible. We will see if he can achieve another win at next year’s Stanley Cup finals alongside the Tampa Bay Lightning.

1. Alphonso Davies [Soccer]

Image from bundesliga.com

Alphonso Davies, a Canadian soccer player, is a player for Bayern Munich in Bundesliga. He was a former Whitecaps player, and he moved to Bayern Munich in 2019. He plays Left-back & winger positions for the team and won many trophies with Bayern Munich.

In my opinion, he is one of the most successful athletes in the world in 2020. I first noticed him when he played against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League this season. Because of his performance in that game, I became his fan, and I wasn’t surprised that he was very successful with Bayern Munich. His soccer skills and his speed are incredible. Furthermore, he also has good teamwork skills. He and his team won 5 major trophies in 2020: Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, DFL-Supercup, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Super Cup.

Given his success, I have placed him as number one on this list. I am impressed that he has accomplished so much at only 19 years old. He still has a lot of time and opportunities to improve himself and to be more successful. Hopefully, he will be the best soccer player in the world one day.

If you want to know more about Alphonso Davies’s story, you can listen to Supakrid’s Echoes podcast in the link below.

Since many sports are coming back to television, I hope you have fun watching your favourite sports and athletes during the Covid-19 pandemic. If you agree or disagree with my top 5 list or have any thoughts, you can leave your comments below.

Ways to overcome depression during the Covid-19 pandemic

Covid-19 has been with us since March, and it has caused many negative effects on the world. For example, many businesses have had to shut down. Moreover, Covid-19 has had a negative effect on people,  the biggest effect being depression.

Depression is a mental health issue that causes a mood disorder and a persistent feeling of sadness. It changes the way we feel, think and behave, it makes people have emotional and physical problems.

According to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, depression for Canadians has increased by 31.2% since July because of Covid-19. People are worried and concerned about their personal health, their family’s health, their jobs and finances, and social isolation. Thus, this has become one of the biggest issues in Canada today.

Because of this situation, I have experienced depression as well. Similar to other individuals, I worry and fear for my personal health and my family’s health when I have seen so people die from  the disease. I worry about my career and my financial situation. This is a big reason that causes me depression because I have many goals that I want to achieve in 2020, but I can’t do it because of Covid-19. I can’t have a good student life because I can’t go to school and study. Furthermore, I wasn’t able to find a job in the summer because many companies were closed and reduced their workforce.  I also worry about social isolation because I can’t see the people I love and travel around the city.

This is one of the toughest moments in my life and it’s been very difficult to overcome all of these situations effecting my depression. However, because of my family’s support and much encouragement from the people I love,  I have tried to overcome my depression by finding solutions to stop it. After attempting many solutions, the following have helped me to overcome my depression, so…

Here are some of the solutions that have helped me to overcome depression during the Covid-19 pandemic

“Exercise”

Even though this solution seems so simple, it really helped me to overcome my depression. When feeling depressed, I couldn’t  sleep at night because I always think about the many bad situations that I face. However, after doing the exercises, I have a good sleep again. I have done many exercises, but one exercise that really helps me to overcome my depression and have a good sleep is running. Running is a very good exercise because it improves every system in the body such as your muscles, skeleton, blood, and respiratory system. Besides, running also creates a good chemical in the brain, so it can reduce depression. Because of the many benefits of running. I have tried to run when I have free time. I run 5 kilometres per day and try to up the speed in order to develop my body strength. After I have been running for a while, I can feel that my physical health is better and fresher. Moreover, I have a very good sleep because I am tired from the running, so I overcame my depression, and have strong mental health again.

“Doing something that I love”

Many people always say if you do something that you love, you can forget your pain. I think it’s true because when I have done something that I love, it helps me to forget some bad things in my life and overcome my depression. In my life, there are several things that I love to do, and during the pandemic, I have done 3 things that I love and It really helps me to overcome my depression. First, it’s watching sports. Even though many sports have been postponed for almost 3 months since March, when they were back, I can’t stop watching them. I love watching many kinds of sports such as basketball, soccer, tennis, and badminton. When I watch sports, I feel like I get my problems off my chest. Every time that my favorite teams or favorite athletes win a game, I feel very joyful, so watching sports really helped me overcome my depression. Second, it’s playing the guitar. Happily, I decided to buy a guitar before the pandemic, so I can play it during this difficult time. I have been playing guitar for many years, and every time I play it, it helps me to vent my emotions. I always play a song that I like when I have bad feelings, and it really helps me to overcome my depression. Third, it’s watching a movie. During this pandemic, I have seen a lot of movies and series on Netflix, and all of them make me feel good in different ways. For example, The Last Dance is a documentary about Michael Jordan and the 98’Bulls, it motivates me because of Michael Jordan’s winning mentality. As a result, I have more motivation to fight my depression, and  to overcome it.

“Talking with people who I love”

Because everyone around the world has to do social isolation in order to stop this virus, it is very challenging for me to have face-to-face communication with people who I love such as my family, friends, and teachers,  Luckily, there are many applications such as Zoom, FaceTime, Line which provides me the ability to meet, chat and see them virtually. Therefore, I always use these technologies to talk with them. It has been very valuable to talk to them during this time because I receive a lot of good energy while talking to them. We always share good moments and bad moments,  and it encourages me to get better and overcome my depression.
