How to explore the world without travelling

I have been extremely blessed to see different parts of the world from such a young age, so much so it has given me these extreme desire to explore that is hard to curb especially during this pandemic.

Whether you have travelled many times or had your first international trip booked and had to cancel because of COVID or you never have been outside of BC before, if you are like me and have this innate desire to travel, this pandemic is really making things  tough.

You might be experiencing symptoms of wanderlust, restlessness and just an overall sadness for the time you have lost and all those memories that will never be because there are “stay at home” orders (on top of being sad and frustrated from the state of the world).

You may have tried to curb these feelings by watching movies that peak your desire to go somewhere new. Or you may have scrolled through posts on Instagram, looking at brightly coloured places you hope to see one day.

But I think the best way to curb your wanderlust is to accept the fact we are not going anywhere any time soon and educate yourself on the places and cultures you would like to visit. This could be done in multiple ways that don’t just include aimlessly scrolling on your phone and getting jealous of the stunning photos, but anyone could get suckered into doing that!

Here are some ways to explore different countries without travelling.

Try Out Different Ethnic Restaurants: Vancouver offers some amazing and authentic restaurants of any culture you can think of, try out a place you were hoping to visit one day, that could be anything from Japanese (a true staple in Vancouver) to something unique like Malaysian. Dine Out Vancouver is on right now making it more affordable to try new things.

Read Up On The Country: This could be through guide books, fiction/ non-fiction books that really dive into the cultural (and literal) landscape of the country, but it could even be as simple as old blog posts from people who have travelled there.

Go On Virtual Tours: This one I have a hard time doing (as it makes the most sad I can’t travel) but so many unique attractions around the world offer virtual tours from The Louvre in France to Machu Picchu in Peru. You can even look up random drives on Youtube in places such as Hawaii and stare and dream one day you’ll get there.

We’ll get out there again eventually my fellow wanderlust-ers, remember to support and keep dreaming in the meantime.
