Managing a healthy work school life balance

Managing a healthy school to work life balance can be challenging, especially when you’re in a full-time program at BCIT. There will be points throughout the semester when you will feel like the world is crumbling around, but don’t worry, take a deep breath.  Everything will be okay.

The program I am enrolled in is the full-time Operations Management program, and I just started my second year. This program and the relevance of the material constantly impresses me with how relevant it is to a real life working experience. Before taking it, I spent 5 years working as a project coordinator and I wished I knew then what I know now from the program. The Operations Management program is challenging, but also very rewarding. As rewarding as it is, I always find myself struggling between school life and my social life. How I manage them both is through discipline and time management.

A few tips that I can offer is take advantage of the breaks throughout the day in your timetable, and try to be as efficient with your time as possible. I always enjoyed sitting up in the library in the silent study, and just work on homework. That way at the end of the day, you can relax and put on your favourite Netflix show. I would not, however, recommend starting a new series in the middle of the semester.

Set a day out of the week where you have “me time” and on that day just hang out with your friends and by yourself. Trust me, you will burn out if you don’t. You have to take care of yourself while you’re at BCIT and manage a healthy lifestyle, go to the on campus gym, go to bed at a decent time, and most importantly, eat healthy meals and try to stay away from greasy food.

What helped me stay on task and ahead of deadlines is to update my calendar on my phone. That way, I could see when everything was coming up for me.

Thank you for reading, hopefully these tips help.
