The Vancouver matches mark the first for the Canadian’s Men’s National Team on home soil since qualifying for the World Cup, which was a 4-0 win over Jamaica at Toronto’s BMO Field on March 27.

It also marks the Canadian men’s first visit to BC Place since March 2019, which was when they beat French Guiana 4-1 in CONCACAF Nations League qualifying.

Canada will be closing out the FIFA international window after the set of matches at BC Place with another CONCACAF Nations League game against Honduras in San Pedro Sula on June 13th.

Canada has a 1-2-0 record all-time against Iran, winning the most recent match 1-0 in April 2001 in Cairo, Egypt. Iran posted 1-0 wins over Canada in 1997 and 1999 games in Toronto and Edmonton respectively.

The matches are set to take place as both Canada, ranked 38th in the world, and Iran, No. 21 in the world, are preparing for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Canada has been drawn into Group F alongside Belgium, Croatia and Morocco, while Iran has been drawn into Group B alongside England, USA and a European Playoff winner who is still to be decided.

The Iran match is one of the few World Cup warmups the Canadian National Team in advance of Qatar. Canada head coach John Herdman has said he will look to take the team to Europe in the fall to play several more matches in preparation for Qatar.

Vancouver Whitecaps exercise demons, advance in Canadian Championship

After falling to Pacific and Cavalry in the first two Voyageurs Cup tournaments featuring CPL clubs, the Whitecaps finally exercised their demons and beat a CPL team for the first time in team history.

The Caps confidently beat Valour FC on Wednesday to advance to the second round of the tournament and play Cavalry FC.

It was a moment of redemption for the Caps, who had been eliminated in the Canadian Championships the past two years at the hands of much inferior CPL opponents.

Heading into the match, head coach Vanni Sartini spoke on the importance of it, citing it as the most important game of the year. “We can be very clear, Wednesday is the most important game of the year. Why? Because if we lose we are out of the Canadian Championship.”

Sartini knew the stakes that were on the line heading into this game, with the last Whitecaps gaffer being sacked after 2021’s Canadian Championship elimination loss to Pacific FC. “We enter the competition and have to be honest in a way that we are the big guy, we’re not the underdog because the CPL, of course the budget and everything, we need to have extreme respect for Valour because the last two years, the last two Canadian Championship campaigns have been very disappointing for the club.”

The win against Valour was on the back of a huge victory against Toronto FC over the weekend. The win marked the end of a 3 game losing streak for the ‘Caps, who still remain at the bottom of the Western Conference.

The Whitecaps will face Cavalry FC in the Championship League in Calgary on May 28th, with regular season action resuming on Saturday, against the San Jose Eartquakes.

Vancouver Canucks are finalists to land KHL superstar Andrei Kuzmenko

NHL teams have been holding their breath the last month while KHL superstar Andrei Kuzmenko decides which team he will start his NHL career with. According to Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie and Dahli – The Team, the Canucks are among the Finalists to sign the KHL superstar who hails from Yakutsk, Russia.

Landing Kuzmenko would be a huge get for the Canucks as signing a player in free agency is essentially free – Kuzmenko is considered a rookie by NHL standards, and would therefore be forced to sign a 1 year deal with a maximum cap hit of a $925,000 – with no draft picks or trades required to acquire the KHL star.

Kuzmenko’s agent Dan Milstein of Gold Star Sports Management joined the Canucks Conversation Podcast to talk about Kuzmenko, highlighting the fact that Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin saw the KHL superstar play nine years ago, and has kept tabs on him ever since.

The Canucks have had trouble attracting free agent talent in the last half decade or so, especially European free agents, so this represents a chance for new management to really strut their stuff.

As teams interview Kuzmenko, he will surely be looking to sign with the team that gives him the best chance to produce in a top-six role in the NHL, hoping to cash in after his short entry level deal expires next season. You can be sure the Canucks have promised the KHL star prime minutes alongside one of their star centres in Elias Pettersson, Bo Horvat, or J.T. Miller.

It can sometimes be a balancing act while trying to court free agents, as it’s tough to know exactly where players will slot in next year. There are many things that could happen to the roster between now, and when training camp opens up for the Canucks, which is set to take place some time in early October.
