Today’s research for tomorrow’s buildings

Major funding awarded to the Building Science Centre of Excellence from Western Economic Diversification

Fitsum Tariku, Building Science Centre of Excellence Director and Building Science Graduate Program Director with Andrew Saxton, MP North Vancouver, representing Western Economic Diversification, stand next to a cut-away model of building envelop technology.

February 23, 2012 BC’s damp coastal climate is tough on buildings. BCIT’s Building Science Centre of Excellence, the only one of its kind in Western Canada, conducts leading-edge applied research that aims to help make buildings more affordable, more sustainable, more energy efficient, have a longer lifespan with greater durability, and take the health of occupants into greater consideration.

That job got a little easier February 22, with the announcement of $530,000 in Western Economic Diversification funding. The funds will go toward creating new and expanded labs, as well as applied research to improve building performance and building envelope design. Focus will also be placed on the commercialization of new products and technologies in the construction sector, resulting in more affordable, durable, and energy-efficient buildings in Western Canada and beyond.
