Our People: Meet Nitasha Naiker, Program Head, Accounting and Finance Diplomas

Putting people at the core of everything we do is paramount at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. We are committed to ensuring our people — those who make BCIT distinct, are developing while feeling valued, supported, and connected.

BCIT is a people-first organization. We aim to celebrate our employees by sharing their stories through the Our People series. The series features BCIT’s extraordinary employees who share a strong sense of pride and ambition for the Institute and make up our diverse community.

Get to know Nitasha Naiker, Program Head, BCIT Accounting and Finance Diplomas.

How would you summarize the work that you do at the Institute in 15 words or less?

I have worked with BCIT for 10 years. I have the privilege of working with our talented students teaching them Accounting principles.

What does winning an Employee Excellence Award for Applied Research mean to you?

This is my second time winning an Employee Excellence Award. The first time, I received an Employee Excellence Teaching Award in 2018, and then I went on a leave of absence from 2018 to August 2021.

The best part is being acknowledged and recognized by my students. Whilst there may exist the stereotype of lecturing being one walking into a lecture hall and talking, it actually takes hours of preparation to ensure a positive student experience. Knowing that I have made a positive contribution to a student’s time at BCIT is extremely gratifying.

What has been your most memorable moment working at BCIT?

I have had many great moments at BCIT but two stand out in mind. I worked with two of our alumni to have BCIT accepted as the only polytechnic into the JDC West Business Case competition. Five years later we continue to participate showcasing the awesome skills of our students.

The second is being faculty advisor to our Accounting students participating in the CPA case competition. In the midst of exams and with challenging schedules our students placed first! I love being able to showcase the abilities of our students externally and having them succeed.

How do you spend your time outside of work? Do you have any hobbies?

Time outside of BCIT is family time! We are foodies and travelers and love spending quality time together creating memories.
