Over one million job openings are projected in BC between 2022 and 2032, according to the latest Labour Market Outlook. More specifically, technology is expected to be a key growth area, with 148,000 professional, scientific, and technical services job openings forecasted, ranging from computer engineers to user support technicians, and more.

While the demand for workers is strong, nearly 80% of the job openings over the next decade will require post-secondary education or training.

Computer Systems Technology (CST) – Diploma

The Computer Systems Technology (CST) Diploma program is BCIT’s entryway for high school graduates and others who want to become software developers in just two years. This diploma program combines computer systems theory with hands-on practical experience. You’ll learn software engineering and programming from industry professionals, and gain well-rounded skills essential for a career in analyzing, designing, and developing software solutions. On top of this, you get to work on at least two industry projects –you’ll get to hone your skills and build your network before you even graduate.

Computer Information Technology (CIT) – Diploma

Computer Information Technology (CIT) Diploma is another two-year diploma program suitable for high school students and those with little tech experience. CIT suits those who are interested in being IT generalists who are not interested in specializing in only software development. You’ll develop knowledge and experience with the latest computing technologies, and gain transferable business skills necessary to begin a successful career in the IT sector. Graduates typically work as IT specialists responsible for planning, deploying, administering, and configuring computing infrastructures for organizations across all sectors.

Data Visualization with MS Power BI – Microcredential

Data visualization is important for every industry as it helps decision-makers quickly view patterns and trends. For those without experience using data analytics tools but are looking to build their skills, this microcredential is for you. You’ll learn to use the latest tools to analyze and model data with graphical representations – all of which will be useful for your next presentation. This microcredential is generally suited to a mature professional audience looking to add skills to their professional portfolio.

Technology Support Professional – Certificate

If you have no training in computing, or need to upgrade your IT skills for the Canadian job market, the Technology Support Professional (TSP) program is designed to help you get into the technology sector in just 10 months.

You can choose a fully online or a blended model that is partly on campus. For the first 8 months, you’ll build skills through classroom and project work. Then you’ll spend seven weeks on a work term where you partner with industry to apply your skills and a tech support role. In addition to technical training, this program will also provide you with career search support, such as resume writing and interview preparation. Graduates work in tech support positions across industries, helping run the systems we all rely on.

Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity – Various types of credentials

With new technology and innovation, the demand for cybersecurity and digital investigation skills across organizations and sectors continues to soar.

Learning is flexible with different types of credentials to choose from, such as an advanced certificate or a degree program, and most recently, a six-day microcredential in Cybersecurity Essentials for IT Professionals that provides fundamental cybersecurity training to IT professionals – it all falls under the umbrella of the new BC Future Skills Grants. Web Development – Microcredential

If you want to build web pages, the Web Development Foundations microcredential can help get you started.

Industry experts will teach skills for web scripting to help you start creating web pages and websites. Upon successful completion of each course in the microcredential, you may also apply for a digital badge that can be linked to your online resume or website to demonstrate that you have the competencies assessed.

Then take your skills to the next level by completing the Introduction to Full-Stack Web Development microcredential for advanced JavaScript back-end and front-end web development skills. These 2 new microcredentials form 50% of the Applied Web Development Associate Certificate, and can lead to higher-level BCIT credentials.
