Bridging maritime education with Vancouver Maritime Museum

BCIT is thrilled to collaborate with the Vancouver Maritime Museum (VMM) in providing enhanced marine education to students at the BCIT Marine Campus. Together, the institutes are working to promote an understanding of the marine industry as a continuum with a past, present, and future.

Through this partnership, an array of ship models will be available for BCIT instructors to use in delivering visually engaging curriculum and for students to learn about the history that shape the maritime sector of the Pacific Northwest and Arctic.

“For the Vancouver Maritime Museum, connecting with communities is core. Our collaboration with BCIT enables us to bridge our museum world – with its own educational programs, research agenda and fabulous collections of artefacts – with the world of academia. To that extent, we have established contacts with among others SFU and UBC, and are delighted to add BCIT to this illustrious list of fine institutions of higher learning. Let this be the beginning of a long, enduring relationship between the two of us,” said Joost Schokkenbroek, Executive Director, Vancouver Maritime Museum.

This partnership with VMM will allow BCIT students to have a more holistic perspective on their area of study and the industry altogether

As the primary provider of accredited professional training for the maritime industry in Western Canada, BCIT has trained generations of Canadian mariners through its applied education model designed to inspire creativity, enhance critical thinking, and improve problem solving capabilities. Integrating the history of the maritime sector into select marine courses at BCIT will complement this education model by providing students with a more holistic perspective on their area of study and the industry altogether.

“VMM is an important partner in providing historical relevance to our students. Through the study of these detailed ship models, we enable our students to understand the evolution of vessels, their present day applications, and to make globally relevant connections in their field of work.  Furthermore it certainly adds a distinctly maritime ambiance to the campus,” added Captain Philip McCarter, Associate Dean, BCIT Marine Campus.

Select artifacts from the Vancouver Maritime Museum will be available for viewing during scheduled tours and industry events taking place at the BCIT Marine Campus. Learn more about marine programs at BCIT.
