An Unsigned Success

Unsigned BC is a non-profit radio show that showcases undiscovered and independent artists from all over BC. The Unsigned BC brand has already played a big factor in BC’s Hip Hop community by giving a platform for talented artists to get discovered.

The show is currently an hour long and plays all Hip Hop tracks, but the founder, Brandon Krupa says they are looking to expand their horizons by playing different types of music on an extended time slot.

“The thing that I’m trying to do, is to expand the show to two hours a week so that we can touch on every genre, we do one hour that’s going to be sort of Pop and Hip Hop and then the other hour is going to be, basically everything else, your country, blues, classical.”

The brand is gaining more attention on social media, accumulating over 3,800 followers on Instagram. The show has received respect from the BC Hip Hop community since they are giving a platform to those who need it. Despite starting in October of 2020, they have already created a community that includes many different styles of Hip Hop music.

Unsigned BC was recently featured on the “All Points West” show by the CBC. They have also just filmed their first showcase that is set to premiere in June and they have a “song of the summer” competition open to submissions now.

Work Demand on The Rise

Multiple community programs at UBC saw a surge in new registrants after they were moved online due to the pandemic. The Director of Community Programs at UBC, Don Black said that there’s potential that many of these students stick to the new format once classrooms open again.

“Some of our programs, like we do a large language program, everything from sign language to German and French, that kind of stuff. The numbers in our language programs have gone up by 30 percent once they’ve gone online and we expect that an awful load of those students will continue to study online, even when they can go back to campus.”

Universities and colleges have been told to prepare for in-person learning in the fall. The combination of in-person & online students will be a lot to handle for UBC staff.

The demand for work will only continue to increase over time as life works it’s way back to what it previously was. The stressful times will still be stressful managing community programs that have students back in person as well as many students learning online.

River District Developments

Developed from what was previously a sawmill, there’s a growing area in Vancouver called the River District that is starting to turn into a desirable place to live in the city. What was previously a sawmill, the River District has undergone a lot of growth since the beginning of development in 2010 with the River District Community Centre and Romer’s restaurant. It has since created a town centre that is home to multiple retailers.

Dean Johnson from Wesgroup Properties says that this neighbourhood has a lot to bring to the city.

“It’s important because I think it shifts the focus of the city of Vancouver to a corner of the city that some may say is a little bit… off the beat in path. A lot of the city of Vancouver’s focus is really turned towards other parts of the city and I think the opportunity for this community is to bring resources and bring amenities down into this part of the city.”

The River District is one of Vancouver’s more unknown neighbourhoods. It’s quiet but peaceful and there’s a lot of potential. The vision for the neighbourhood is to create an enjoyable and vibrant community.

The development of this neighbourhood will incorporate ways to use less water, energy, electricity, and materials. The vision of creating a complete community is coming to life.

Behind The Brand

Angelo and Arnel Santiago are brothers who run a local clothing brand called TERCERO. The brand started in January of 2020 and has been a creative outlet and form of expression for the two. Arnel says that starting this business with his brother has brought them closer.

“As brother’s as well before, that bond was only through basketball now it’s “Oh Gel (Angelo), do you wanna go make a hoodie? Oh, this would be a dope hoodie, let’s go make this real quick.” The clothing has connected us as a family and it’s just a positive feeling when you’re experiencing that.”

They are doing it as family and they are taking the steps to further progress their brand through gaining social media attention and creating a community.

The brand has accumulated over 300 followers on Instagram since they started the page. They say that they have no plans to stop despite previous speed bumps in the process. The Brother duo is trying to make an impact in the community by teaching the younger crowd how to make clothing and spreading a positive message.

The World of Cryptocurrency

The world of cryptocurrency has caused a lot of buzz around the world and there’s a lot to take in on the subject. Content creator and known investor, Lotus Mesic says that the best way to earn yourself some money is to do the research.

“Do some research right now just because there’s a lot of money to be made, at least within the next two-three months, you can make a lot of money if you’re doing the right thing and if you’re doing the right research and whatnot.”

Lotus also went on to say that social media has created a lot of excitement for crypto and most people getting into it now are diving in head first with no education on the topic. He says the best way to make money in cryptocurrency is to listen to those with experience.

The times are always changing and you must find a way to adapt or you’ll be left behind, that’s what’s happening in this case. Many have made enough money to retire from this form of investing. Anybody can do it, they just need to know what they’re doing.
