Discover North Vancouver’s Vibrant Night: The Shipyards Night Market is Back!

Just imagine, after a long day, finding a place where you can unwind, enjoy a great craft beer, and dig into some delicious food. Are you feeling the vibe? That’s what the Shipyards Night Market in North Vancouver is all about. It happens every Friday from May to September.

Last year, I got to check it out, and boy, what an experience! Between a cold beer and some mouth-watering food, I also got lost in the live music filling the night.

Located at the Shipbuilders’ Square at the end of Lonsdale Avenue, this event isn’t just a market, it’s a festival. You won’t find cheap trinkets here. The focus is on quality, from handmade jewelry to homemade jams, artisan chocolates, and a selection of organic products. It’s an invitation to appreciate the work of local craftspeople while enjoying some good music outdoors.

And that’s not all, while the market goes on under the open sky, inside The Pipe Shop, the Made in the 604 Markets craft market takes place, offering even more local and handmade products.

Each Friday brings a new surprise. The bands and artists change weekly, always keeping things fresh. And if you, like me, love a good beer, you can’t miss the market’s beer garden. I remember the lively atmosphere well, with people chatting, laughing, and just enjoying the setting.

At The Shipyards Night Market, entertainment is a vital part of the experience, making every visit unique and memorable. The entertainment lineup is diverse, with a mix of live music spanning various genres, ensuring there’s something for everyone. From local bands to solo artists, from jazz to rock and pop, live music is the beating heart of the market as the sun sets.

Each week brings new artists to the stage, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. For example, you might start the evening with a smooth jazz band. As the night moves on, the beat might switch to something more upbeat, like a rock band or a pop group that gets everyone up and dancing.

Besides musical performances, the market often hosts special events like local talent competitions, offering a platform for new artists to showcase their skills. These nights are particularly special because you can feel the energy and support of the local community.

Tips to make the most of the market’s entertainment:

  1. Arrive early: This gives you a chance to explore the stalls and pick a good spot before the performances start. Plus, it lets you enjoy the relaxed atmosphere before the crowd arrives.
  2. Check the schedule in advance: Look at the market’s official website or their social media to see which artists will be performing. This way, you can plan your visit around the shows you most want to see.
  3. Explore the venue: Between performances, take a walk around the market. Take time to check out the craft stalls, try different dishes from the food trucks, or simply enjoy a craft beer while the next band sets up.
  4. Participate: Often, there are interactions between the artists and the audience, like dance-offs, sing-alongs, or even invitations to come up on stage. Getting involved in these moments can enrich your experience even more.

The Shipyards Night Market is not just a place to shop; it’s a cultural event that celebrates music, art, and community. With an always-evolving entertainment schedule, each visit promises to be as unique and memorable as the last.

Easily accessible, the market is just a five-minute walk from the SeaBus terminal at Lonsdale Quay. My tip? Leave the car at home and come by public transit. Not only do you avoid the struggle for parking space, but you can also enjoy the local beers worry-free.

Have you been to the Shipyards Night Market? Do you have any tips or stories to share?

Noah Juulsen Steps Up: A Game-Changer for Canucks?

Noah Juulsen is hitting the ice again for the Vancouver Canucks this Tuesday, and the timing couldn’t be more crucial. It’s been since April 23 that Juulsen last played, and he’s stepping in to fill the skates of Carson Soucy, who got a one-game suspension. Why the suspension? Soucy delivered a cross-check right to the face of Connor McDavid, the star of the Edmonton Oilers, as McDavid was falling towards him at the end of Game 3.

The Canucks, who currently lead the series 2-1 after their 4-3 win on Sunday, find themselves at a critical juncture with Juulsen in the game. They’re just one win away from pushing the Oilers to the brink of elimination, and Juulsen’s role could be key.

Canucks’ coach Rick Tocchet openly expressed his relief and confidence in having Juulsen ready: “Lucky for us to have him as our seventh defenseman. Juulsen’s been a solid contributor all year and has faced some tough spots. We’re really confident in ‘Juuls’.”

Juulsen, 27, only made one appearance in this year’s playoffs, in Game 2 of the first round against the Nashville Predators, where he played for 11:24 minutes and ended with a minus-1. During the regular season, though, he notched one goal and seven points, averaging 14:53 of ice time.

“We’ve been doing that all year,” Juulsen said about rotating in and out of the lineup. “Guys have been shuffled in and out, and those who come in, pick up the pace as well. Obviously, the longer you’re out, the tougher it gets. But as a group, we try to stay engaged and on top of things as best we can.”

Meanwhile, Soucy, who will now be watching from the sidelines, had four assists in nine games this postseason and during the regular season added two goals and six points in 40 games.

With the stakes getting higher and expectations rising, can Juulsen push the Canucks to another crucial win? That’s the big question and everyone is keen to see what he can bring back to the ice.

So, what do you think Juulsen’s return will mean for the Canucks’ game? Do you think he’s going to shake things up or is it just another day at the office?

Lost Lake: A Hidden Gem Destination to relax this summer

If you’re in Vancouver or nearby and looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, let me tell you about Lost Lake in Whistler—it’s a surprisingly charming destination. Just an hour and a half drive from downtown Vancouver, this lake offers a peaceful retreat with a tempting mix of natural activities and scenic beauty.

I’ve been there myself and let me tell you, it’s absolutely gorgeous. From hiking and biking trails in the summer to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, there’s always something exciting to do.

In the summer, the park turns into the perfect getaway with its beach and swimming area. Picture yourself chilling on the sand or taking a cool dip in the crystal-clear waters of the lake. I must admit, I haven’t gone for a swim there yet, but I’m already planning to go back there this summer to jump in! There are picnic areas and trails for walking and biking that are just ideal for a day out in the fresh air.

During the winter months, from December 15 to March 31, the park transforms into a haven for snow sports enthusiasts. The trails are meticulously maintained to offer the best cross-country skiing experience, with over 25 km of routes to explore. And even in the cold, the beauty of the place is breathtaking.

The park is also fully accessible, with adapted parking spots, bathrooms, and picnic tables, ensuring everyone can enjoy the space. There’s even an accessible outdoor shower, which is a big plus! Access to the lake is made easy by a free bus service from Whistler Village during the summer months, ensuring everyone can enjoy this beautiful spot without worries about parking or traffic.

Facilities include equipment rentals and a snack bar for when you get hungry after a day of adventures. It’s important to note that in the summer, the area welcomes food trucks as part of the city’s Park Eats program, offering tasty food options.

Remember, the park has specific rules to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone. Pets have designated areas, and there are clear regulations about smoking and alcohol consumption. And don’t forget: there’s no lifeguard on duty, so always be cautious near the water.

Lost Lake Park isn’t just a place, it’s an experience. It’s the perfect escape to break away from routine and connect with nature. No matter the season, each visit is unique and I guarantee it’s worth checking out!

So, if you’re looking to reconnect with nature or just find a quiet place to escape daily stress, why not put Lost Lake on your list?

UnexpectedMove: Blue Jays Fans Outraged by “Home Plate Lady’s” New Spot

When it comes to baseball, we all know that every little detail of the stadium adds to the game experience. But when the Blue Jays decided to move the iconic “Home Plate Lady” to a new spot after renovating Rogers Centre, the fans were not pleased at all. Let’s dive into this drama!

Who Is the Home Plate Lady?

For those out of the loop, the Home Plate Lady is that symbolic fan of the Blue Jays. She’s been a fixture for years with her serious demeanor and strategic spot right behind home plate, visible to everyone. She even got a cardboard cutout tribute during the border closure in the pandemic. Picture this: she returns to live games in 2021, and the whole stadium stands up to applaud her. That’s some serious respect, right?

Rogers Centre Renovation: Looks Good, Costs More!

The stadium underwent a renovation costing a whopping $400 million. Sure, there were improvements that got some praise, but they shuffled the layout so much that even the seasoned ticket holders are paying more for less appealing seats. And what about the Home Plate Lady, moved to a less visible corner? The big question is whether it was her choice or not. From the fans’ reactions, it seems like the Blue Jays are more focused on making money than maintaining fan loyalty.

More Than Just a Seat

The Home Plate Lady is more than just a regular fan; she’s part of the team’s soul. And even with the thrilling victory over the Mariners, the fans are still focused on her saga.

She might not care much about the change, but she’s become a symbol of the fans’ frustration with renovations that, no matter how expensive, can’t replace the human essence that sports carry.

The renovation brought some new stuff, but is it worth it if it means losing touch with the people who really make a difference in the stands?

Will the Blue Jays Rebuild After Disappointing Start?

Major League Baseball Mlb GIF by Sportsnet - Find & Share on GIPHY

(GIF via Giphy by Sports Net)

The Toronto Blue Jays’ shaky start to the 2023 season is catching a lot of eyes for all the wrong reasons. After a busy offseason meant to pump up the lineup, things haven’t panned out as expected. Right now, the team’s stats are hanging out near the bottom in a bunch of key offensive areas.

Baseball expert Ken Rosenthal dropped some thoughts on the Foul Territory podcast that caught my attention. He mentioned that if the Jays don’t start living up to their potential, and they’re just hovering around a .500 win rate or worse by the trade deadline, it might be time to consider a major shake-up. “I don’t care how close they are to a wild card,” he said, hinting at a possible teardown of the team.

The pressure’s even higher considering Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette are hitting free agency after 2025. With neither locked down with a long-term deal, it’s crunch time. And with both guys not hitting their usual numbers—Vlad’s at a .229 batting average and Bo’s even lower—things look tricky.

The Jays’ playoff runs in recent years haven’t exactly been inspiring either. Despite making it to the postseason three out of the last four years, they haven’t won a single playoff game. Last year’s sweep by the Minnesota Twins highlights how much the offense is struggling.

Looking ahead, a bunch of key pitchers and players like Jordan Romano, Yimi Garcia, Chad Green, Chris Bassitt, Yusei Kikuchi, and catcher Danny Jansen are also nearing free agency. It adds another layer of uncertainty as the trade deadline looms.

Rosenthal compared the Jays’ situation to the New York Mets in 2022. The Mets were struggling and made their first big trade before the deadline while out of the wild card race. We might see something similar with the Jays if they can’t get their act together soon.

With what Rosenthal calls a “limited shelf life,” the pressure’s on. The team has to decide: stick with the current squad and hope for a turnaround, or start fresh and rebuild for the future. The next few months are crucial for the Blue Jays’ direction.

Did You Miss This? The Northern Lights Made a Rare and Spectacular Visit to Vancouver!

The Northern Lights

(Imagem via Flickr by Raniery Melo)

Last night, something unbelievable happened here in Vancouver and around the world… If you need clarification on what I’m talking about, you probably missed the Northern Lights. And for those who missed this phenomenon, heads up, it’s happening again tonight, but sadly, it won’t be a frequent occurrence

The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, occurs due to the interaction between solar particles and Earth’s magnetic field. When these charged particles collide with atoms and molecules in our atmosphere, the reaction releases energy in the form of light, creating the spectacular light show I was lucky enough to be able to witness.

Now you might be thinking, “Isn’t this something you can only see in the Arctic?” Well, it’s definitely a more common occurrence in Canada’s polar regions, but under specific conditions, like during a strong solar storm, the southern region of Canada can get a chance to see it. And, since the solar storm was strong, the aurora was visible not just here but in many other parts of the world too.

As a Brazilian citizen who barely knew what the Northern Lights were until I heard about the phenomenon in Canada, experiencing the light last night, I can say for sure it was one of the most magical and illuminating experiences I’ve ever had. All thanks to some friends who wouldn’t take no for an answer. Hahaha! And the funniest part was before heading to the roof of my building to look, I was imagining the sky all green, the lights moving in a big wave across the sky. When I got there, the sky was all dark and I thought: “Where’s the aurora, guys???” When I opened my phone, BOOM.

My Roof top View of The Northern Lights

(Imagem via Flickr by Raniery Melo)

I almost couldn’t believe it: the sky was painted with vivid colors — greens, purples, and blue hues — a light show that seemed like a scene straight out of a movie.

Anyway, for those interested, my tip is to make the most of winter nights when the sky is clearer and the nights are longer. And of course, try to stay away from city lights, light pollution can obstruct your view of the auroras. I watched from the rooftop of my building but ideally, you should go somewhere with little to no light pollution.

Some several apps and websites can help you know when conditions are favorable for the aurora to appear, here are a few really useful ones:

  1. Aurora Forecast: This app is excellent for those in North America. It provides real-time predictions on aurora activity, plus tips on how to view them best.
  2. Space Weather Live: This website offers detailed information about space weather and the auroras. In addition to predictions, you can learn more about the phenomenon and better understand the conditions that favor its occurrence.
  3. Aurorasaurus: A collaborative project where users can report sightings of the aurora. This helps create a real-time map of auroral activity, making it a great tool for aurora hunters.

As for the best times to watch the Northern Lights, the period between 9 PM and 2 AM is generally considered ideal. This is when geomagnetic activity often reaches its peak, increasing the chances of seeing the lights. However, it’s always good to check specific forecasts for the day you plan to observe, as auroral activity varies a lot.

Seeing the Northern Lights is a memory I’ll always cherish. It made me feel an incredible connection with the world around me. If you’re also an urban adventurer or a nature lover, put this on your Bucket list.

I guarantee it will change the way you see the world. A clichĂŞ however the beauty of nature is amazing

So, did you see the Northern Lights last night? No? Have you ever seen them in your life?

Tell me below how your experience was. I’d love to hear about your first reaction.
