Tai Verdes at the Hollywood Theatre

Tyler Colon, also referred to as Tai Verdes, is an American singer/songwriter making his name as a pop artist. You might know this guy from TikTok as a couple of his songs like “Stuck in the Middle” and “A-O-K” have gone viral. Don’t miss this opportunity to watch him LIVE at the Hollywood Theatre on Monday November 14th.

Tai Verdes

Tai Verdes is starting to expand his gratifying and catchy discography with his new album HDTV that released back in September. Tai attacked this album with sprinkles of jazz and spices of disco along with his typical R&B vocals. Kicking off the album with “Kingdom Come” which provides the trumpets that immediately catch your attention and then next thing you know the third song “Trix in the Bag” goes to a hard kicking beat with the some rap and soft vocal then he immediately switches back to R&B with some touches of jazzy trinkets in the background in “Shut Up.” I love Tai’s style of music because he shows versatility and doesn’t have one genre stapled to him. He touches on many different areas and with someone with as much talent as him, it’s important to utilize that opportunity and not take it for granted.

Tai grew up in California playing the guitar, piano, and ukulele and also played college basketball at Babson College in Massachusetts before dropping out to pursue his music career. He was working at phone store over the pandemic which helped him for his music path because he was able to carve out time to build and construct the masterpiece that’s “Stuck in the Middle”. With the song getting so much love and attention, Tai’s quoted saying the song “doesn’t just turn into a million dollars and a nice car. It turns into waiting – which I think I’ve gotten pretty good at.” Tai took advantage of the attention he was getting and gave the people another heater in “A-O-K” which has topped at 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and getting over 24 million plays on the radio.

“A-O-K” is a song that connects to you deep down letting you know that everything is going to be okay. It’s a song that just puts a smile on my face every time I press play which I assume is the goal in every project that Tai commits to.

Be sure to show Tai Verdes the love he deserves by heading to the Hollywood Theatre this Monday night at 8 pm and catch him LIVE! It’ll be a decision you’ll never look back on.

Kevin Morby tour finale at the Hollywood Theatre

American singer/songwriter in the indie rock spectrum, Kevin Morby, is set to take the stage tonight for the second leg of his Vancouver doubleheader at the beloved Hollywood Theatre. Morby is capping off his tour promoting his 7th studio album, This is a Photograph, that was released earlier this year back in May.

Kevin Morby

It was unfortunate happenings that inspired the artist to record this album such as the fear of death and his father collapsing due to medical reasons in 2020. Morby started building the tracks and the entire album after reminiscing about the past when coming across old family photos. It was when he encountered a photo of his dad when he was his age, shirtless under the Texas sun that reminded Morby a lot about himself. The album was recorded in New York and Sam Phillips Recording Studio, in Memphis, Tennessee. Along with the struggles his dad went through with health and the unfortunate collapse, the album was also inspired by the history of tragic events that took place in Memphis with the deaths of Elvis Presley, Jeff Buckley, and Jay Reatard. It is also the area where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis. The album was highly praised among the critics getting an average score of 87/100 based on 10 reviews.

The song talks about the photo of his dad that inspired the album as described earlier. With a light rhythm with the guitar and subtle drum its a very calm song to listen to. It doesn’t really fit the style that I listen to but its one that I’m not against in anyway whatsoever. It does build nicely as the song goes on and you can’t help but tap your foot to it and rock your body. Its a style of music that is still needed this day and age because a lot of people are sticking to the trends but these indie type songs keeps the music fresh and its simply different making him stand out from the rest.

Kevin Morby’s tour finale at the Hollywood Theatre is SOLD OUT but more is potentially to be put on sale so you can still join the waitlist! Despite maybe not getting a chance to catch him live, this is a flare for you to add some Kevin Morby to your playlist today!

5 albums, world peace, and an ambassador for human kindness… Buckman Coe provides the versatility that shocks the eardrums in the most beautiful way. With what sounds like a taste Hawaii with jazz, folk, and soul, it is near impossible to point out flaws when listening to Coe. Lucky for you, Buckman Coe will be doing everyone in the Vancouver area a favour and playing a show on November 19th at the Osita.

Buckman Coe

This will be the second consecutive week that Osita will be hosting jazz/folk/soothing music and its a opportunity you can’t take for granted. Buckman Coe has been nothing short of successful when it comes to his repertoire. With 5 albums released, Buckman Coe has prided himself on creating feel good music that enhances the mind and body. His most recent album, Gathering Storm, provides a crazy amount of versatility and a pleasant mix of techno, jazz, and soothing singing and lyricism. It creates a mood where its easy to sit back and simply enjoy life. For some reason I picture myself having a cup of coffee or a nice piña colada on a nice white sandy beach while listening to this album. Its fantastic.

2015 release, Malama Ka ‘Aina [Ma-LA-ma  kah-AY-nuh] is the single and album that stands out the most in his discography. The title of the song is a Hawaiian phrase that means “to respect the land and live in harmony.” The deep passion Buckman prides himself on makes him so much more intriguing because when listening to his stuff you know understand his spiritual nature and passion for social justice.

Buckman Coe is more than just a night out to a concert, it would be an experience that can heal any problems you are dealing and can simply be an escape from reality.

Do yourself a favour and reserve your spot at the Osita on November 19th from 8 pm-11 pm to check out and support the wonderful and wickedly talented Buckman Coe!

David Morin at Osita

David Morin, who made his stamp in the music industry busking on the streets of Vancouver, is set to bring the people a live performance to remember. Every Colour, his self-released debut album, embodies everything the neo-soul singer has to offer. David and his band have experienced all the love when travelling the world playing their music and they look to do the same, this evening, at Osita.

David Morin

Morins soulful writing and singing style binds to many peoples liking and has the ability of changing strangers into fans. Listening to Morin’s discography, what stands out to me is the jazz centric beats that connect with his R&B style of singing. A lot of what he does reminds me of the great Micheal Buble and Jason Mraz. Go The Distance off his 2015, debut album Every Colour, provides the calm voice similar to Mraz and Buble and then comes in with the electrifying jazz drums and foot tapping beat like Buble aswell. The entire album brings this type of vibe and when in need of a relaxing tone and something to play when have a conversation with anyone this would be a great album to throw on.

His latest release, Autopilot, stands out to me because as soon as I press play it throws me a techno, space-y type of intro and creates this entirely new experience. The hard hitting, yet relaxing beat makes the rhythm of the song very interesting and unique. Morin’s voice is outstanding in this song, something is different in this song compared to his others, he fits the theme of the beat and tends to throw in a lot more riffs but doesn’t sound like he’s trying so hard. Whenever an artists tries too hard it sounds crazy and it tones me out of the song entirely. There’s just a time and place for it and a lot of artists misinterpret it, but Morin hit the nail on the head with this single and for someone just getting into him, this would be a great song to show someone who hasn’t heard of him. Morin is looking to catch the hearts of the people when he puts on a show for his hometown.

Reserve your spot TONIGHT to catch David Morin from 8 pm-11 pm at Osita!

Smashing Pumpkin’s at Rogers Arena

One of the most critically acclaimed rock bands of the 90’s is marking their stamp tonight as The Smashing Pumpkins are set to pay Rogers Arena a visit for their Spirit’s On Fire tour!

The Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins is an alternative rock band from Chicago, Illinois. It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride for them since forming in 1988 but despite the struggles they have found a way to establish themselves as a must listen and must watch rock band. Back in ’88 lead singer and guitarist, Billy Corgan, worked at a music shop with guitarist James Iha and they continued to gel and become great friends that led them to writing songs together. With everything seeming to work out well they set up a live show in July 1988 and performed with the aid of a drum machine. Shortly after, Corgan met D’arcy Wretzky at a show and after finding out how much she connected with Corgan and fit the needs of the band she joined as a bass guitarist. With performances helped with the a drum machine it was known that it wasn’t sustainable and they needed to get a live drummer to enhance the purity of live performances. Now come in Jimmy Chamberlin. A jazz drummer that was recommended to them through a mutual friend and it was a move that the band wouldn’t look back on. Chamberlin didn’t know much of what the band was performing in terms of alternative rock so its not off by saying that he changed the sound of the band. Corgan stated that “We were completely into the sad-rock, Cure kind of thing. It took about two or three practices before I realized that the power in his playing was something that enabled us to rock harder than we could ever have imagined.”

The Smashing Pumpkins went through hardships after splitting up in 2000 due to consequences of the rockstar lifestyle such as drugs, internal conflicts and decrease in sales. But the band has still had a tremendous amount of success selling 30 million albums worldwide and taking home 6 awards from 96-97 including MTV Awards for “Best Video of the Year”, Grammy Awards for “Best Hard Rock Performance”, and American Music Award for “Best Alternative Artist.”

Don’t miss out on this performance because by the sounds of it, they’re looking to rock your socks off.

The Out Seer’s… will you Marry Me?

A weekly tradition within the Vancouver area won’t only be turning up on Sunday this week as New Westminster band Marry Me will be joined by The Out Seer‘s this Friday night to show the people at The Roxy how to party.

Marry Me, a 4-piece band, whisks this styles of Green Day and Motley Crew into a blend that portrays an alternative rock and roll sound. Marry Me started off back in 2012-13 when at a production meet up the 3/4 band mates, Danny Lovelock (guitar/vocals), Natalee Lovelock (bass/vocals), and Kenny Dietrich (drums) met and immediately hit it off and started writing their first EP and toured western Canada. Not too long after in 2016, they were lucky enough to introduce a new guitarists to the band, Kylan Prince, and that’s when their discography and band really started to take off.

The New Westminster band is on a tear after releasing an abundance of singles this past summer including Bad, Horns Out, Itchy, Outside, Ignite (I Wanna), and Middle Finger. These records follow the pattern of what Marry Me wants to be which is continuing to deliver a fresh, haunting, infectious alternative rock sound that no one can resist chanting along to.

Another act for the much anticipated Friday Night is Canadian rock Band, The Out Seer‘s. The Vancouver based rock band is a group of 4 friends that pride themselves on creating an original, unique musical mix to the city. All graduating from Selkirk College’s contemporary music and Technology program in Nelson, BC… aswell as the drummer, Aybars Savat, who back in 2012, moved to Canada from Turkey to pursue music. The group all wanted to get together to pursue their dream, make us of their musical education, and create projects together.

Ab Initio by The Out Seer

The Out Seer’‘s are coming off the release of their very first EP “Ab Initio” which released back on April 8th, 2022. Mark your calendars and make a night out to catch Marry Me and The Out Seer‘s this Friday November 11th at The Roxy!

604 Records unleashing new tunes

The infamous 604 records, located here in the lower mainland, has released some new tunes that could sit a top of any of your playlists!

The wide variety of artists connected to 604 records gives you the opportunity to dive into many different genres and styles. From rock, to pop, to country, to punk, these songs can introduce you to different listening experiences.

  1. Wake Me Up On New Year’s Day – Emily & Mike

Wake me Up On New Year’s Day by Emily & Mike is a song the can relate to many people that want to erase the memory of an ex-lover or past relationship. A common trend for songs of this nature lean towards a slow ballad but Emily & Mikes take on it disguises the sad and frustrated message through an upbeat and rock n’ roll tempo. It gives a meaning that their New Year’s wish is to make the memory of an ex-lover disappear so “wake me up on New Years day” when it has come true. This type of song I typically gravitate away from because those standard sad songs dampen my mood but I couldn’t help tap my foot this tune, so all in all its a good listen.

2.   BEFORE THE ALBUM: a love letter to the moons of mars – Mauvey

Mauvey is Ghana born, UK and Vancouver raised, who’s grown his music style into melodic rap, R&B/soul, with alternative pop. He conveys a very important message and direction with his music which is Love. “My message will always be love” says Mauvey, and he tends to do it through creative lyricism, hypnotic beats, and moving melodies. On this record he shows his versatility with “WE HAD THE TIME OF OUR LIVES TOGETHER” then right after flips a switch with “I STILL GET BUTTERFLIES FOR YOU IN MY TUMMY (Ft. Dear Rouge)” He switches up from a loving ballad to displaying his talents towards rap and hip-hop. Displaying this type of talent is critical for artists because you tend to stand out from the rest. Mauvey does a great job displaying his message and seems like a genuinely kind and loving person which always makes the listening experience better. Great project all around.

3.   The Pressha – The Vidos

The Vidos here delivered a track that gets you bobbin your head and tapping your foot. What I took from this track is that as you get older the pressures of making executive decisions and taking control of your adulthood feels like it’s coming on fast and you don’t have time to adapt. “Now I’m grown up, got no point of view. But I better act like I do” sounds to me like things are going to fast for to have any sort of opinion but since everyone else has their self together I have to act like I do as well. It is pretty relatable because there are topics like politics that I just have no clue what they’re saying but when my friends talk about it I just smile and nod and pretend like I know what’s happening. This song was a good tune and the message resonated with me so I felt one with the artist. Great track overall.

Keep an eye for things to come from 604 Records with notable artists like Marianas Trench and Carly Rae Jepsen, and more signed to their label who formerly took care of Dallas Smith, Tommy Lee, and more legends.

Into the Holiday Spirit with Dear Rouge

The Christmas season will kick into full gear by hosting Juno Award winning band, Dear Rouge, on December 10th at The Vogue!

The Vancouver based duo is coming home for their last stop apart of their tour promoting their new album Spirit, which released back on April 8th, 2022. “Spirit” is defined as “the nonphysical part of a person, regarded as their true self and capable of surviving physical death or separation.” Dear Rouge conjured up this record to explore the themes and ponderings of spirits to make listeners discover a part of themselves they haven’t felt before.

The album is a rollercoaster of feelings and emotions which I believe should be the main goal of an album. Spirit kicks off with “Facedown” which starts with a techno and immersive tone that gets you curious to what’s coming next. That kind of intro to an album is really good in my opinion because it gravitates you to wanting more. It’s one to keep you on your toes with the vintage Brittany Spears/ Kesha kicking it off, it then takes a 180 degree turn and explores a different vibe as it goes right into one of their popular songs, “Small Talk” which has a summer tone to it. It explores the anthemic aspect with “Dream Dreamer” and then slows it down and creates a vibe where you are one with the duo in “Life Goes By and I Can’t Keep Up”. Listening to “Life Goes By and I Can’t Keep Up” connected with me because I often feel behind in life when I see others the same age looking like they’re much farther ahead. It got me emotional because I always think that I’m alone with this feeling but when hearing the lyrics fit to your life, it makes me more positive within and motivates me to keep pushing.

Dear Rouge

Since finding each other prior to forming Dear Rouge in 2012, the couple has gone on to release multiple projects, climb the charts with hit singles, and grab multiple awards including their Juno Award back in 2016 winning “Breakout Group of the Year.” Dear Rouge looks to continue growing their brand and blessing the ears across the nation and the world with their unique sound and catchy tunes.

Catch them December 10th at the Vogue for a show you won’t want to miss!

Skye Wallace @ The Fox!

The Fox Cabaret is turning itself upside down this Wednesday evening as Skye Wallace will be headlining a must watch event with guests Zoey Leven and Nonarchy!

Skye Wallace

The Toronto based artist is coming off the release of her 8 song album “Terribly Good” which also marked her debut record for Six Shooter Records, an independent record label based in Toronto, Ontario. Skye says “This record was the process of coming home to myself, of looking in the eye all the messy, sometimes ugly pieces of being alive and the beauty of growing and moving through it.”

This outlook on albums creates a more intimate feeling between artist and listener. Authenticity is an important characteristic when listening to music and with Skye bringing this outlook to her project, I think it’s an incredible start to her new chapter with Six Shooter Records.

Wallace’s breakout single created a ton of buzz throughout the nation especially the Toronto area, where she came onto the scene. Through her debut record for her new label, Tooth and Nail takes you through the journey of life’s imperfect offerings and how anyone can push through them. The edgy yet free flowing song explores Skye’s vocal capabilities and shaped out to be what she considered “a love letter to myself”. Tooth and Nail was beloved and got the recognition it deserved by cracking the Canadian Alternative radio chart!

Wallace’s discography includes 4 more albums “Skye Wallace” (2019), “Something Wicked” (2016), “Living Parts” (2014), and “This is How We Go” (2013). Wallace has had a pleasant history touring the nation with respected acts such as Matt Mays and crown Lands, that it has catapulted her name close to the top and gaining the respect and many listeners. Her early credentials and crowded portfolio earned her a nod in 2019 for “Best 4 Canadian Albums in the World” by Globe and Mail.

The Canadian rock-folk artists is destined to make you feel free from any life’s stresses with her sound permeating Courtney Barnett, Patti Smith, and Neil Young! Cross off your calendar for Wednesday and make a night out to catch Skye Wallace at the Fox Cabaret on Wednesday November 9th from 8pm-12:45am!
