The legendary Canadian rock band has had undeniable success since forming in 1988 out of Scarborough, Ontario. BNL has gone on to win multiple Juno Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and Grammy nominations, along with selling over 15 million records.

It all started when Co-founders Ed Robertson and Steven Page grew up with each other as aquantances and then eventually built their relationship through work as counsellors. They found out how much they had in common, one of them being music, which kickstarted them harmonizing with each other. After going to a Bob Dylan concert together and making up band names that could be be funny and unique, they came across “Barenaked ladies”. Ed Robertson was in a cover band but a week before their set at “Battle of the Bands”, they broke up. Robertson then had to make up a band name and then remembered “Barenaked Ladies” and then called up Page to perform with him and then they improvised their set. Additions were made to grow the group and then the band started making noise across the nation, going on tours and releasing full length albums going gold and platinum. Despite the success there were some changes within the band based on mutual agreements including OG co-founder of the group, Steven Page. The member of the bands now include Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Tyler Stewart, and Kevin Hearn.

Barenaked for the Holidays is the bands holiday themed, studio released album that were given to the people back on October 5th, 2004. It’s an album that was traditionally sung around New Years Eve but includes many tracks simply for the winter season. The album also features fellow Canadian artists Sarah McLachlan and Michael Bublé, the features helped the BNL’s achieve gold status in Canada for the album.

Get into the holiday spirit with Canadian heroes, Barenaked Ladies at The Centre for Performing Arts at 8pm!

Built to Spill… a masterful performance

American indie-rock band, Built to Spillis scheduled to get the people groovin’ when they perform at The Commodore on Monday November 21st! The group is coming off the release of their ninth studio album when they released When the Wind Forgets Your Name on September 9th, 2022 by Sub Pop.

Built to Spill @ Fremont Solstice Festival 2014

The band has been going strong since forming in Boise, Idaho back in 1992. The band performs under the indie-rock, alternative rock and has been centred around the lead singer and guitarist, Doug Martsch, who has been the only permanent member in the group. Doug had a unique vision for a band by having a new set of backing musicians to feature on each album but eventually settled for a stable band for nearly a decade before returning to his earlier envisioned plan in 2012.

The band was formed in 1992 by Doug Martsch, Brett Netson, and Ralf Youtz. After the bands first album, Ultimate Alternative Wavers, was released in 1993, Netson and Youtz were replaced by Brett Nelson and Andy Capps for their 1994 album There’s Nothing Wrong with Love. Martsch went on to record and release more albums including a solo project with blues and folk elements. Martsch performed solo concerts in light if this album because the band was on hiatus during this period. Melanie Redford and Teresa Esguerra now join Doug Martsch in Built to Spill as members of the band going forward.

“Rocksteady” is the fifth song on the bands new album When the Wind Forgets Your Name. The album was written and produced by Doug Martsch and as a whole the album has received decent reviews, notably a 70/100 by Metacritic. This song Rocksteady, brings an element very similar to The Beatles where the beat is slow and hard hitting with a slow, calm, and heavily reverbed voice. Its a very cool and unique song and is one that I usually don’t listen to but its such a cool experience listening to this song so I enjoyed it very much.

Be sure to catch Built to Spill on November 21st to experience Doug Martsch and his band live! Tickets are on sale so buy yours today before its too late!

Juno Award winning, and identical twin sisters Tegan and Sarah are set to perform at The Commodore on November 20th! The indie-pop duo have been bringing the classics since forming in ’98 and don’t look to change anything when they visit Vancity!

Tegan & Sarah

Tegan and Sara a Canadian born indie pop duo from Calgary, Alberta who formed in 1998 and have been highly praised across the world by many people. It all started back in ’95 when the duo were 15 years old and they found a hand-me-down guitar in the basement. Sara went on to write a little song called “Tegan Didn’t Go To School Today” and then the 2 recorded the song onto a little cassette tape. After going through a few duo/band names and recording a few demo albums in their school recording studio, it got them into some competitions and battles like “Garage Warz” where they ended up winning. Using that studio time they released their first professional demo, Yellow tape under the name “Sara and Tegan” which was then followed by an Orange tape and Red tape. 1998 marked their first major show when they opened up for Hayden in Calgary, Alberta. Just a year later they released their debut studio album Under Feet Like Ours and went through a name change that you now know as Tegan and Sara.

“Closer” released in September 2012 as the lead single from Tegan and Sarah’s 7th studio album Heartthrob and has been considered the biggest hit by the duo where they won a Juno Award for Single of the Year in 2014 and the same year they won Pop Album of the Year for Heartthrob. This was one of the 16 times they’ve won an award while also being nominated for awards 48 times including a Grammy in 2013 for Best Long Form Music Video for “Get Along”

Tegan and Sara (Crybaby Tour) - Tegan Quin & Sara Quin with Adam Christgau & Isaac Bolivar

Modest Mouse SELLS OUT their Vancouver doubleheader

American indie-rock band Modest Mouse is coming to Vancouver to rock The Commodore on November 27th & 28th. The band is riding the momentum of their 7th studio album The Golden Casket released back in 2021. They still seem to have gas in tank, selling out both shows at the Ballroom on Granville.

Modest Mouse - Osheaga 2014

Modest Mouse is an American indie-rock band that was formed back in 1992 in Issaquah, Washington. Lead singer Isaac Brock, drummer Jeremiah Green, and bassist Eric Judy are the founding fathers of the band and they were massive fans of Pavement, Pixies, XTC, and the Talking Heads who eventually influenced them to start Modest Mouse. The lads rehearsed and recorded demos for multiple years, grinding behind the scenes, before eventually signing with with small, indie label K Records and eventually releasing a few singles, and their first EP Blue Cadet-3, Do you Connect?. The band has gone through multiple line up changes throughout the years with 9 former members including original bassist Eric Judy who changed instruments and roles a few times before eventually fizzling out of the group. The band now consists of the OG’s Isaac Brock and Jeremiah Green, with new(ish) members such as bassist Tom Peloso, guitarist Russell Higbee, percussionist Ben Massarella, and lead guitarist Simon O’Connor.

Wooden Soldiers is the 5th song on their 2021 album The Golden Casket which has received generally positive reviews through Metacritic, a website that reviews TV shows, albums, music, video games, + more, gave the album a score of 78/100 which generally means it was given “favourable reviews”. This hasn’t been the first time the long running indie-band has received critical success because back in 2000 when they released their first album under Epic Records, The Moon & Antarcticadespite concerns about it being released under a major label, it gained a score of 9.8/10 from online magazine Pitchfork Media.

illuminati hotties to take the stage at the Biltmore Cabaret

Originating from south of the border in Los Angeles, California… Sarah Tudzin and her band will be rocking the Biltmore Cabaret as the illuminati hotties on November 18th!

Illuminati Hotties

Sarah Tudzin, the frontman of illuminati hotties, began music as a recording engineer and specializes in curating other individuals into musicians they didn’t know they could become. Tudzin continually showcases her high class vision and stylistic fluency in different types of music from experiences working with upper echelon bands and musicians like Coldplay, Lady Gaga, and Barbara Streisand.

illuminati hotties grew into fruition as an extension of her work to display Sarah’s various production capabilities, who then in 2018 released their full length debut album, Kiss Yr Frenemies. The album brings forward a mix of up-tempo rhythms and soft, slow rolling songs both providing the beautiful and outstanding vocals. The album got good reviews as  Larry Fitzmaurice of Pitchfork gave the album a 7.3/10.

“Sandwich Sharer” is the bands new single that was released back in February 2022 and brings a high intensity beat that comes and go’s as the song progresses. The vocals remind me a lot like Tegan and Sarah, they are are very soft and clean vocals and fluctuate beautifully throughout the song.

illuminati hotties provide a very fun and entertaining portfolio of music and I expect nothing but a top tier performance from the American indie-rock band. Get your tickets today so you don’t miss out when they come to the Biltmore Cabaret on November 18th!

beabadoobe SELLING OUT The Commodore

Beatrice Laus aka beabadoobe, has taken the city by storm, SELLING OUT The Commodore on November 22nd. The 22 year old is keeping up her momentum with her second album Beatopia where she told Apple Music, “I just wanted to branch out” where she wanted to create something out of the comfort of her own house. Carving out a studio in South London, she called up fellow musician Jacob Bugden to create a variety of tunes that they liked but weren’t what they were used to. It was important to Beatrice that she get out of her comfort zone and not have herself stuck to one genre.

bea-badoo-bee

beabadoobe is a 22 year old indie-rock singer/songwriter born in the Philippines who then packed up and moved to London with her mom when she was 3. She grew up in West London listening to pop, rock, and indie-rock and spent 7 years learning how to play the violin and then started playing the guitar around the age of 17. Inspired by Kimya Dawson, the Juno Soundtrack and watching YouTube tutorials, she developed a love for making music and then decided to take the leap.

In 2020, Beatrice released her debut album Fake it Flowers. A very personal album where she wanted to express what she put down in “diary entries”. It is an album where she made sure that “there was a song for every mood and every Bea that exists.” These albums are important because it grows an interpersonal connection between the listener and the artist. The album got excellent reviews and was critically acclaimed getting a rough score of 81/100.

Beatopia - album artwork

Riding off the success of Fake it Flowers, comes her 2022 album Beatopia where she took the opposite approach. Fake it Flowers consisted of songs representing the negative aspects of her past when in Beatopia, she accepts what’s happened and is now the clear sky above what was once a gloomy day over her last album. Beatopia is an album that talks about being in love, experiencing life as a young adult, taking care of yourself, and making sure you’re surrounding yourself with people that truly care about you.

“The Perfect Pair” comes off as a love letter and describes the communication between a couple. It seems to resinate with her because it’s about what happened in the past and how she’s developed to be the same kind of person with lack of communication. It is a very soft spoken song with detail in the lyrics and is also super relatable to people. That’s what I love about beabadoobe is that she connects with a lot of people and speaks on topics that a lot of people have been through.

Despite the show being sold out, don’t let it stop you from looking into more shows of her and exploring more of her discography. If you are lucky enough to be attending her show, then you are in for a stellar time and should be nothing short of fantastic!

Faouzia’s CITIZENS Tour at the Rio Theatre

Moroccan/Canadian singer songwriter Faouzia is hitting the Rio Theatre on November 17th for her CITIZENS Tour! Coming off the release of her debut album “CITIZENS” back on May 19th, 2022… Faouzia looks to rain her powerful vocals down on the people of Vancouver!

Faouzia

The 22 year old was born in Casablanca, Morocco before moving to Manitoba, Canada when she was one, then eventually settling in Carman, Manitoba. She started gaining traction after uploading original tracks and covers to YouTube that got the attention from Paradigm Talent Agency where she signed a contract that lead to her debut single “Knock at my Door”.

“CITIZENS” is a project that spotlights the powerful vocals of Faouzia and the insane range in her repertoire. Kicking off the album with “RIP, Love” what immediately comes to mind is hints of Shakira. This song is one that creates a suspense at the start then provides a club-like thumping beat that gets you lost in the moment. Funny enough, the album seems to be sandwiched between similar tracks because “Puppet” brings the same energy if even more. It starts off with moving, strong vocals then goes in to a body pulsing beat that immediately gets you grooving. Its a perfect song to get people on the dance floor and is such a good way to end a beautifully pieced together album.

Give “Puppet” a listen below! I dare you not to dance.

Throughout the album, she pours her heart into every song releasing the feelings it seems she’s kept restricted. From “Thick and Thin” to “Don’t Tell Me I’m Pretty”, they’re slow moving ballads that insinuate heart break and tell stories of her past that has hurt her, especially relationships. “Anybody Else” especially sticks out to me because the lyrics like “I wouldn’t wish this love, wish this love on anybody else” and “How could I be so dumb? I’d say “run” to anybody else” stands out because it shows to the regret she went through when in the relationship and begs for anyone else to not make the same mistake she made.

“Minefields”, her 2020 single with Grammy award winning artist John Legend is a beautiful slow moving ballad that contrasts perfectly with Faouzia’s uplifting, upper belting range and Legend’s deep, baritone range. The song did quite well, topping at 45 on the Canadian Billboard Digital Chart.

“CITIZENS” tugs at the heart strings while also providing dance along songs with STRONG vocals that blow you away. Listen today to prepare yourself for what Faouzia is about to bring to Vancouver!

Alan Walker | WalkerVerse: The Tour

Norwegian DJ Alan Walker is ready to get the people buzzing when he swings by Vancouver to rock the Harbour Convention Centre this November 24th and 25th!

Alan Walker

Walker started getting into music when he reached out to DJ Ness in 2012 and asked him how he produced his music. It was then when Walker started to piece together sounds on FL Studio and watch YouTube tutorials online to learn more tips and tricks to producing. His initial interests were computer programming until he picked up the hobby randomly not too long after. Once he was starting to get feedback from people online, he took that opportunity and ran with it to pursue a music and producer career. It then all began to escalate when he signed a record deal in a couple years later in 2014 with NoCopyrightSounds. He had released his song “Fade” in August of 2014 and when signed his record deal they re-released a couple months later in November and it sky rocketed getting over 400 million views on YouTube, 115 million streams on Spotify, and 41 million streams on SoundCloud.

Wasn’t too long after that Walker signed with MER Music under Sony Music Sweden and they then released his single “Faded” which is the remastered, vocalized version of “Fade”. The single when on to gain platinum status and as of April 2022 it is the 21st most viewed video and 14th most viewed music video on YouTube with over 3.3 billion streams, the first EDM track to hit that milestone. It has 1.5 billion streams on Spotify, making it the 48th most streamed song on that platform.

Alan Walker isn’t just living off his past though because he has released some new heat. “Lovesick” with Sophie Simmons is a very upbeat and has a funky jive that puts a smile on your face. With calm yet powerful vocals from Simmons, the song dips and has a few bridges that bring subtle suspense to the song. A clean record overall and lives up to the name that is Alan Walker.

Don’t miss out on the show and buy your tickets today to see Alan Walker at the Harbour Convention Center on November 24th and/or 25th!
