Dosanko – Japanese cuisine as authentic as it can get

Finding authentic Japanese food at restaurants in Vancouver can prove to be a challenging task for most people. The ingredients and flavours from the food culture in Japan is very different compared to the Western food culture. A restaurant called, “Dosanko” that’s located at 566 Powell Street has a menu that offers authentic Japanese food as well as dishes that combine Western and Japanese food. Their dishes are creative and delicious. The story behind how Dosanko was created is an interesting one that reveals the inspiration and thought process behind the vision for the restaurant.

It all started around 10 years ago when Akiyo Tani met with chef Nathan Lowey and prepared a dish called nikujaga for him. The dish was a stew that had meat, potatoes and vegetable and was cooked with sweetened soy sauce. Her food was so delicious the Lowey said it tasted like it was made by the Japanese grandmother that he never had. I feel like that’s the best compliment that you could give someone because we all know about the amazing meals that grandmothers make us.

Dosanko is a combination of Akiyo Tani’s family recipes and Nathan Lowey’s mixed family traditions. Together they have created a menu with dishes that represent Japanese and Wester food cultures. The restaurant has a 45-seat dining room that’s a few blocks away from Canada’s oldest Japanese language school. Although, the food has Japanese influence, it has elements of Western cooking that is brought by chef Nathan Lowey’s experience of working in some of Canada’s top restaurants. Dosanko has a no-waste philosophy when it comes to the use of their ingredients in their dishes. I think that if the food is so delicious, I’d have a no-waste philosophy when it comes to eating the food as well. Eating at Dosanko is an opportunity to experience a different style of food and culture.

Is That French – A different take on Pacific Northwest cuisine

One spot that comes to mind when you’re in the mood for something different near Gastown is, “Is That French.” It’s located at Blood Alley in Downtown Vancouver and it’s not on most people’s radar. It has a small space with a simplistic sign at the entrance but sometimes, the best spots are hard to find, just like this one.

This oyster bar restaurant has an innovative take on Pacific Northwest cuisine. Their vibrant menu is unique and contains a variety of dishes made with fresh and seasonal ingredients. They have an impressive selection of high-quality sustainable seafood. People usually go to experience the oysters, but they stay longer because of their wine selection. Occasionally, they have live music to set the mood and create a calm, cozy environment where people can relax and have a great time. Usually, there’s a local jazz artist who plays music every Thursdays.

The food, wine and music are all ingredients that make this spot a special one. The thought behind their concept, setting, menu and atmosphere is amazing. They’re looking to bring a change in the culinary space in Gastown and they’re doing it in style. They named their restaurant, “Is That French” because their menu makes people wonder if the place is an oyster bar or a wine bar or a French spot. Either way, the name is clever, just like the way their wines are selected and the way their dishes are made.

Phnom Penh – Authentic Vietnamese and Cambodian food

The best part about travelling is the different authentic cuisines that you get to experience. When you come back home, you start to remember the taste of the delicious flavours in the meal, and you start craving for more. The great thing about food is that it has the ability to connect us with a place, its culture and traditions. Even if you haven’t travelled to a certain place, eating dishes from their cuisine can help you feel connected to the place and its food culture. Phnom Penh is a restaurant that’s located at 244 E Georgia St in the heart of Chinatown, and they make a case for one of the best fusion restaurants in Vancouver.

They serve some of the best Vietnamese and Cambodian foods that the city has to offer. This family run restaurant has a long history in the culinary industry and their hard work ethic is finally being recognized. The story behind the opening of Phnom Penh is interesting and inspiring at the same time. The family has roots in Vietnam and they immigrated to Canada to start a new life with this business venture. In 1982, they opened a small noodle booth in the Vietnam-Chinese Community Services Association of BC on East Georgia Street, it was just down the road from where the Phnom Penh currently is. After being shut down for not filling out the right paperwork, they worked really hard to open Phnom Penh in a better location.

The food they serve is cooked with the memory of their childhood and it reminds them of home. This is the reason why their food has a different flavor to it. It’s from the heart and it’s as authentic as authentic can get. Over the years, they’ve had a lot of ups and downs but they’re finally at a point where they’ve succeeded and people from Vancouver get the opportunity to experience their exotic food and culture.

The Pourhouse- Live jazz music and more!

Listening to live music evokes a different feeling compared to listening to it any other way. It has a way of touching a nerve and making you feel a certain way. Going to concerts can be expensive or the experience isn’t as fun because of the crowd of people violating your personal space. I find that live music is a lot better to experience when there’s an accommodating atmosphere. One place in Vancouver that has a great atmosphere and ambience to enjoy live music, is the Pourhouse at 162 Water Street. They’ve got live jazz musicians playing there every Thursday and Sunday. The guaranteed bar/lounge seating option is available for just $5 per person and all of the money go to the musicians. Visiting the Pourhouse on one of the nights where they play live music is a great opportunity to show support and appreciation for local artists.

The Pourhouse has a small intimate setting, and the atmosphere of the place makes it a great spot to enjoy a meal, drink or live music with friends. The building is 100 years old but looking at the inside, you probably can’t tell. Although the place has been refurnished, there’s a rich history that can be felt when you enter. Their cocktails have an old-fashioned and their food is made with the intent of comfort. The happy hour menu takes effect every day from 3PM-6PM and its reasonably priced and the options are amazing.

They’re not just known for their live music, food and cocktails, they mean business with their coffee. They serve a beautiful local roast and incredible loose-leaf tea. Some of the items on the regular menu might seem a little expensive but their focus is on quality over quantity. Pourhouse is a place where live jazz music and creatively crafted food and drinks is found.

Provence Marinaside is participating in the this years Dine Out Festival!

There are restaurants in Vancouver that offer more than food. They offer a special experience every time you go there. It’s a combination of food, drinks and the atmosphere that make people feel happy to spend their money and time. One restaurant that does this in a remarkable fashion is the Provence Marinaside at 1177 Marinaside Crescent. It’s a French seafood restaurant and bar but seafood and cocktails are not all they do. They serve brunch, lunch, dinner, wine and cocktails and each of their menus are stacked with delicious creations made by Executive Chef Jean-Francis Quaglia and Chef de Cuisine Sheldon Maloff.

Provence Marinaside does a great job of combining the flavours and recopies from the food culture in the South of France and the Canadian West Coast. They use the ingredients and flavours from both food cultures to create their own version of dishes that can’t be found anywhere but here. Using fresh produce and their culinary wisdom, they have made dishes that taste so delicious! Even if you find other French restaurants that serve the same dishes, the taste is not going to be the same.

The restaurant has a spacious setting with options to sit indoors during the cold and gloomy days and they have the option of sitting in the patio where the False Creek and seawall walk is across the street. The inspiration for the layout of the restaurant comes from restaurants in Europe. They have a similar sophisticated and elegant setting that Provence Marinaside have replicated. The restaurant has a cozy and intimate atmosphere, especially on every Wednesday, when they have live music to set the mood and entertain customers. They support local jazz musicians and their community by donating cash and meals to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. Provence Marinaside is participating in the Dine Out Festival this year and it’s the perfect opportunity to try their amazing food and drinks.
