My Hero is Music

What’s your favourite kind of music? I love all the different types. Some of my favorites are classical, rock, pop, country, and alternative. What about bands? What is one of your favourite bands? I like Weezer, ZZ Top, Maroon 5, and Coldplay.

There are countless artists and songs in this world, and although none of us will ever be able to agree on the best music on the planet, we should be able to recognize a good song when we hear one.

The song I want to share today is My Hero by the Foo Fighters. The piece highlights and tributes the heroes that the band’s lead guitarist and singer, Dave Grohl, had in his life. These are ordinary people who did extraordinary things. Who is a hero in your life?

Free vector flat comic style background

This song is written from a kid’s perspective but reflects Grohl’s beliefs. As is the case with many of the band’s songs, many listeners assumed that this song was about Kurt Cobain, but Grohl has assured them it is not.

This song is so incredibly popular that it has even appeared in movies. In 1999, the music was used in the film Varsity Blues and Somewhere, which came out in 2010.

The song has even made headlines in politics. In 2008, the music was used by Republican nominee John McCain for his US presidential campaign. It’s not a bad song, but the band was unhappy when they found out! When the Foo Fighters found out through news reports that this was happening, they denounced his use of the track.

The band claimed their song was written to celebrate the ordinary person and his extraordinary potential. They believed that using their music for political use and without their knowledge tarnished it.

The song was played to an enormous audience in 2020 when Dave Grohl played an acoustic version from a studio in Hawaii as part of the “Living Room Concert For America.” It was a benefit broadcast played in 2020 to raise money and spirits during the pandemic. Grohl dedicated that performance to those on the frontlines of the pandemic.

Music has the power to change someone’s life. It has the ability to raise our spirits. This song has been used precisely for those purposes!

Please have a listen to the band’s video, and let me know what you think about it!

It’s a bad touch, but a GREAT song!

Have you heard The Bad Touch by the Bloodhound Gang? Today is the first day that I discovered this song. I was looking for a piece to talk about and stumbled upon some of the lyrics to this tune.

If you haven’t seen the lyrics or heard the song, you might want to look at it, especially if you’re in the mood for a good laugh! That music video is something else. I wonder if I’ll ever be able to remove it from my memory altogether. Good luck to you!

It’s a little hard to truly express my thoughts on this song, but that’s a problem many people who listen to it will have. Please give it a hear and see what you think.

The song came out in 1999. Its catchy tune and humorous lyrics help boost its popularity! I’m a little surprised that this is only the first time I have heard it.

In addition to its nostalgic vibes, the song is simple and creative. It’s a novelty song! There is a playful groove to it. The music video also causes mixed reactions.

The video with the monkey costumes and quirky choreography is memorable. That’s one word to describe it! Even though it seems like a playful and lighthearted song, there is a bit of a darker side to it. It’s a side that you may have overlooked.

The song includes social commentary on various topics. Objectification and superficiality are two issues that the song tackles. The band uses satire to emphasize society’s importance on physical appearance and how that can be overshadowed when it comes to genuine connections.

There are lots of challenges that arise when trying to maintain a relationship. Having healthy and meaningful connections is challenging when many are obsessed with beauty and instant gratification. Some of us prioritize physical attraction over emotional connection, and the song pokes at that, too.

Clever wordplay and humorous lyrics help invite listeners into the song. The band also aims to help listeners reflect on the nature of their relationships. I’m sure you have many connections with different people, so listen to this song as a reminder to keep things simple.

Ask questions about people to get to know them, and they will become more beautiful and meaningful. Focus on building genuine connections that go way above the surface level. It’s a fun song! How can you not love it?

Jordan Klassen set to rock Delta

I hope you love alternative and indie rock music because you’re in the wrong place if you don’t! Here at Evolution 107.9, we just so happen to love that kind of music, and that’s why we play it on our radio station 24/7. It’s the kind of music that is light, fun, entertaining, and, believe it or not, sometimes very inspirational.

Being able to connect with music isn’t always easy, but once you can relate to a song or a band, it seems to become more memorable, impactful, and meaningful. I’ve listened to my fair share of alternative music over the past year that I have been at BCIT and have enjoyed the music that we play. It’s a goal of a band to connect its music to its listeners through songs and lyrics, but it never hurts to put on shows and events for fans to come out and support their idols.

This takes a love for a band or singer to another level when they go from listening to them to being able to see them and share their admiration with others who love their music, too.

The Barnside Harvest Festival is taking place in Ladner, BC, this weekend! The festival starts today and ends on Friday, so it should be an exciting three days at Patterson Park. If you have a dog, you can bring it to the festival on Sunday! Your dog should get the chance to have a blast this weekend, too.

Jordan Klassen is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and musician. He does it all! Klassen is known for his indie folk and indie pop music. He was born on March 12, 1985, in British Columbia, Canada. It’s great to learn about B.C. singers! When you listen to his music you can hear his emotive and introspective songwriting, which often features lush and atmospheric arrangements. He should be a hit this weekend!

The Sheepdogs, 54-40, The Road Hammers, Dear Rouge, The Zolas, Jesse Roper, and more will round out the main stage. Sunday should also be lots of fun if you like dogs! There’s going to be musical mats and a best-dressed pet parade.

Don’t miss your chance to attend an entertaining festival in Delta and experience some sick shows! Parking is available on-site, but try and take transit so you don’t have to worry about getting a parking spot. There’s going to be some great food and beverage options, including a variety of food trucks, the Delta Firefighters Charitable BBQ, and more!

You better hurry, though, as tickets have been on sale since June, and they are going fast. Click here to get your hands on a ticket right now.

The Zolas are another Canadian indie rock band that will be hitting the stage in Delta this weekend! That band came to life in 2009, and its main members are Zachary Gray and Tom Dobrzanski. The band is loved for its catchy melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and a sound that blends elements of indie rock, pop, and electronic music. It’s always fun when the Zolas get on stage!

54-40 is one of the epic bands set to play this weekend. The band was formed in our lovely province in 1981 and has released numerous albums and hosted lots of shows. “I Go Blind,” “Ocean Pearl,” “One Gun,” and “Nice to Luv You,” are some of their top hits that have become staples of Canadian rock music. Neil Osborne (vocals, guitar), Phil Comparelli (bass), Brad Merritt (drums), and Dave Genn (guitar) were the original members.

The Sheepdogs, one of Canada’s best-known bands with their trademark classic rock-influenced sounds, will be hitting the stage in full force! The Candian rock band was formed in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. A fun fact about the Sheepdogs is that they won the Rolling Stone “Choose the Cover” contest in 2011, which let them go on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. A classic rock sound and a nostalgic feel is what you can be ready to hear this weekend!

A HUGE band is heading to VAN

Fans from all areas of our city and beyond will gather at BC Place on Friday, September 22, and Saturday, September 23, to greet the world-renowned British rock band Coldplay. The group, consisting of Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion, hasn’t played in Vancouver in over a decade.

Despite the absence of the band’s presence, Coldplay has always had a special connection to Vancouver. The band has put on unforgettable concerts in the city over the years, and the city’s breathtaking landscapes and friendly atmosphere always make them feel at home.

It appears that tickets for their two shows in Vancouver are already sold out! After looking at the list of their remaining shows on their tour, only one show still has tickets available in early February next year. It’s good to know that Coldplay is still alive and well in people’s hearts worldwide.

The crowd inside BC Place will be buzzing once their favourite band hits the stage, and fans of all ages will likely sing their hearts out! BC Place will light up with the soft glow of cell phone flashlights, creating a breathtaking sea of stars like it has many times before.

Fans will leave the stadium and enter the city’s night air filled with excited chatter as they disperse into the city streets, their hearts still resonating with the music and the memories of that unforgettable evening. Hopefully, you are lucky enough to have a seat inside the venue!

Their song “Fix You” is my absolute fave! Check out this sick video from the band performing the song in concert!

I couldn’t find a ticket, but I hope you enjoy the show if you are lucky enough to get a seat!

Digging Deep: Foo Fighters

I’ve attended BCIT for over a year and have tuned in to our radio station (Evolution 107.9) many times since I first enrolled in the program! It’s been fantastic hearing classmates on the radio and songs from the various bands who get played on the station.

Near the end of last year, I even got to be on the radio, providing an hourly sports update – which was lots of fun! I have always been interested in the different kinds of bands played and want to look at one band in particular! Join me as I learn more about the FOO FIGHTERS.

The Foo Fighters were formed near Vancouver in Seattle, Washington, in 1994. The ringleader of the musical group is Dave Grohl, the former drummer of the legendary rock band Nirvana, who took over after the tragic death of Nirvana’s frontman Kurt Cobain.

Grohl initially recorded a demo album’s worth of songs after Nirvana’s dissolution and played all the instruments himself. Grohl switched from drums to guitar and took on the role of lead vocalist for the Foo Fighters.

The name “Foo Fighters” refers to unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and was taken from the term used by Allied aircraft pilots during World War II to describe various aerial phenomena.

Dave Grohl recorded the band’s first album, “Foo Fighters,” as a solo project, playing all the instruments himself. The band’s debut self-titled album, “Foo Fighters,” was released in 1995. The album’s success led to the formation of a full band, with Grohl on vocals and guitar, Nate Mendel on bass, Pat Smear on guitar, and later additions of Taylor Hawkins on drums and Chris Shiflett on guitar.

As the years have gone by, the Foo Fighters have become one of the most successful and enduring rock bands of the past few decades. A mix of alternative rock, post-grunge, and complex rock elements characterizes their music.

Some of their most popular songs include “Everlong,” “My Hero,” “Learn to Fly,” “The Pretender,” and “Times Like These.” Their song “Rescued” is the song you will likely hear the most on our radio station! The band has won multiple Grammy Awards and has a dedicated fan base worldwide. Their energetic live performances are also widely acclaimed.

The band’s lineup has evolved over the years, but the Foo Fighters remain active and are known for their consistent presence in the rock music scene. They continue to be a prominent force in the rock music scene.

The more I learn about this band and the individuals who have made it what it is, the more interested I become. I love digging deep into the things that are around me, and music played on BCIT is something that surrounds me!

Digging Deep: Weezer

I’ve attended BCIT for over a year and have tuned in to our radio station (Evolution 107.9) many times since I first enrolled in the program! It’s been fantastic hearing classmates on the radio and songs from the various bands who get played on the station. Near the end of last year, I even got to be on the radio, providing an hourly sports update – which was lots of fun! I have always been interested in the different kinds of bands played on our station and the ones that could make our station. I want to look at one band in particular! Join me as I learn more about Weezer.

Weezer has been making great music since they were formed in 1992. They are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California. Many people know Weezer for their catchy and often alternative rock sound. They have a nice blend of power pop, punk rock, and elements of pop culture. They also have some clever lyrics.

Their self-titled debut album, commonly called the “Blue Album” (1994), is often considered one of the greatest alternative rock albums of the 90s. Some of Weezer’s most popular songs are “Buddy Holly,” “Say It Ain’t So,” “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Island in the Sun,” “Beverly Hills,” and “Pork and Beans,”  which happens to be one of my favourites! These tracks have helped make Weezer a dominant band.

The band has dropped multiple albums over the past decades, including three in three years from 2008-2010. That’s a lot of music getting made quickly, which is crazy! The band’s debut self-titled album, often referred to as the “Blue Album” (1994), and their second self-titled album, also known as the “Green Album” (2001), are considered some of their most iconic works. Each album has a unique style and sound.

Weezer has released numerous albums over the years, with many quirky music videos, often featuring humorous and pop culture-inspired visuals. The band has continued to tour and release new music, solidifying their status as an enduring presence in the rock music scene, and they have maintained a dedicated fanbase.

The more I learn about this band and the individuals who have made it what it is, the more interested I become. I love digging deep into the things that are around me, and music played on BCIT is something that surrounds me! As Weezer would say – a little bit of love goes a pretty long way!
