Portugal. The Man is coming to Vancouver! The concert will be held on Monday, November 6th, at The Orpheum.

The American rock band has put out some bangers, including Feel It Still. The music video for this song is a little over 350,0000! Factor in the 2.8 million likes it has, and you have many happy people who love their music.

Now that I get to cover alternative music, I get excited when I discover that some of the songs I enjoy listening to count as alternative music. That means I can share them and tell you how I feel about them!

I can’t remember the first time I heard this song on the radio, but I feel it was probably on our car radio station. It’s hard to believe that this song came out in 2017 because that was SIX YEARS AGO!! That’s wild.

I love the beat to the first 10 seconds of this tune. Don’t you find that it gets you going and keeps you anticipating what’s to come? The rhythm throughout helps keep you on your feet and happy.

I want to get up on my feet and dance! I always find that a good song makes you dance or sing, while great music makes you do both! This song can check off both of those boxes. It’s super catchy! I bet you’ve heard it at least once.

I’ll admit that I always thought the name of this song was “Can’t keep my hands to myself,” so I learned something new today when I found out that it’s called “Feel It Still.” Now that I know the lyrics more, I can see why they named it that.

Feel It Still is one of those songs you can hear repeatedly and won’t get old! The song “might be over now, but I feel it still!” Lots of modern music sucks because it sounds the same. This song is unique, and I suppose that’s good for someone who’s “been kicking it since 1966!” I’m not even close to that old, but I had to throw in one more lyric.

Someone hears you when you cry

Life as a teenager isn’t as easy as you might think.

We are all teenagers at one point or another in our lives, and it can be a crappy time. No one seems to leave high school without at least one bad memory. You have probably watched at least one high school movie or heard of a story about bullying taking place.

Personally, my school wasn’t like the movies. We didn’t have the stereotypical jocks bullying the stereotypical needs or fights in the cafeteria for tables. A food fight would have been fantastic, but we didn’t get that either!

The reality is that people can often overlook movies, TV shows, and songs because of how out of the ordinary they can be, but we can all take at least one thing from them all.

When She Cries by Britt Nicole is an easy song for me to relate to, and I imagine you might feel the same way. Depression and mental health are serious issues slowly starting to be discussed today, and I’m all for it.

It sucks living your life without a purpose or life that feels repetitive, a life that follows the same routine daily. We all go through issues, and sometimes it feels like no one is listening, like no one cares. The truth is that no matter how sad you think, at least one person will always care for you.

The song starts with a slow rhythm and lyrics of “little girl terrified.” It starts to progress and get a little deeper near the 30-second mark. “She hurts, she breaks, she hides” are the words you hear. The song aims to bring attention and a bit of piece to a “little girl” who seems to be all alone with nowhere to turn and alone.

“She’ll be just fine ’cause now I know he hears her when she cries.” Those are the song’s final words, as the singer seems to comfort the listener, insisting that “God is watching” and hears your struggles.

I found this song to have a very emotional impact because the story of feeling like no one hears you is relatable. The song’s slow beginning and dramatic ending take you on a whirlwind of an adventure, but it’s all worth it when you discover the terrified little girl has been heard.

The lyrics that make up this song make for a significant impact. Your life may not be perfect, and that’s OK. No one’s perfect. Keep smiling and focus on healing yourself and seeking help if you need it.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS AN ALTERNATIVE VERSION?

There is something so special about the month of December, don’t you think?

I love the magic and happiness in the air while many of us wait for December 25th! Christmas cards, movies, visits with the big man in red, decorating the house, and listening to holiday music are some of my many traditions during the chaotic month.

I love the holiday season so much that it doesn’t matter what song I’m listening to as long as it concerns Christmas! Are you the same way, or do you prefer listening to the classics from Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra? Or are you from a younger generation that grew up with Mariah Carey and Michael Buble? Whatever you prefer, I’m sure you haven’t heard many alternative Christmas songs.

I stumbled upon All I Want For Christmas Is You by Down and Dirty this morning, and I must admit that it seemed to have gotten stuck in my head.

The first ten seconds start with the same opening riff heard millions of times in the Mariah Carey version. About 10 seconds into the song, you listen to some of the lyrics. It’s different from its original and much more fierce. Try and imagine bipolar meets Christmas meets Mariah Carey! It’s wild!

The opening makes it a cool song because it upsets me for the holidays. WHY DID WE NOT KNOW THIS EXISTED?? The lyric video for this song has over 43,000 views on YouTube, so a few of us have heard it more than once!

I’ll admit that this version sounds WAY different from the original, but the band kept most of the lyrics the same. I imagine there are hundreds, if not thousands, of different versions of this song. This is a version that I am glad that I found and can share with you!

When I looked at the comments section, I was surprised that some listeners preferred this version over its original. I like Mariah’s voice, but this is an epic instrumental version. You should listen to it and see what you think about it!

If you feel down and need a boost of energy, and the eggnog isn’t working out for you, get this song on total volume and see how you feel afterward!

Are you excited for Coldplay? The band is coming to Vancouver for two shows this month! They will be here on September 22nd and 23rd and ready to put on an energetic and unforgettable experience at BC Place.

I love the band, and now that they are coming to my city, I can’t seem to get enough of them! Last week, I talked about how ‘Fix You’ is my favorite song that they have done, but a close runner-up is ‘A Sky Full of Stars.’ Have you heard it?

The band always seems to make meaningful music that continues to impress. It’s easy to sing along and dance to their music, and that’s a sign of a good band!

If everyone attended at least one Coldplay concert, our world would have much more peace.

The band is one of our era’s greatest and most humble rock stars, and I get goosebumps watching them perform this song on YouTube. Even without being there, I still have a connection to them! I can only imagine what the band members feel when they perform. It must be an exhilarating feeling.

The sounds the band can make throughout help keep you on track and in a positive mood. Music is medicine for your soul, and is a song everyone needs to listen to.

From the get-go, you can tell this is a particular song, and you’re not disappointed when they get into it. It’s truly magical. Coldplay seems to raise the bar each time they record a new song, and people are taking notice. Their music is true art.

The connection between a band and their fans is standard, but Coldplay can take it to a new level. They are going on an extended world tour, and all their shows except one are sold out! That’s nuts.

Another reason why I love this song is because it was initially produced by Avicii, a phenomenal talent in the music industry before his passing. Coldplay does this song justice. The song is a masterpiece!

No words of pain, drugs, violence, or sadness are mentioned in this song; instead, it’s about happiness, motivation, and magic. True magic. “I’m gonna give you my heart ’cause you’re a sky full of stars!”

The Coldplay concerts will make many happy people happy, and I only wish I could attend to experience one of them. Check out their tour HERE.

When They Ruled The World? I thought they still do.

It’s September. I’m usually not too happy when September rolls around because it marks the end of summer with everyone back at school, but this time, September feels different.

The weather is still lovely, and one of my favourite bands is coming this month! I’m stoked that Coldplay will be at BC Place on September 22nd and 23rd. It’s so exciting! Are you as excited as I am?

The band always seems to produce some great music, and some of my favorites are: ‘Fix You,’ ‘A Sky Full of Stars, and ‘Viva La Vida.’ I’ve already written about the first two songs, so I want to discuss ‘Viva La Vida.’

Even though I remember singing and dancing to it since I was a little boy, it’s still hard to imagine that it has been 15 years since it came out. Yup, you heard that right, I said 15 years. Insanity!!

I’ve always thought about this song as an ancient song that was made in medieval times. The song references “castles,” “Jerusalem bells,” “Roman cavalry,” and “Saint Peter,” so it’s easy to get those feelings.

The song seems extraordinary and makes the band look special. The fact that all but one of their shows is sold out on their world tour proves that people worldwide think they are unique!

Even after 15 years, this song still has the same impact it did when it first dropped. That’s powerful songwriting and rhythm at its finest.

Coldplay never fails to surprise me with their music. I will forever love and respect this song. So much music comes out each year, but there are always songs that leave a mark. This is a song that millions of people know the words to, and it will never get old.

I hope you find some time to put on some of this band’s music and truly listen to their lyrics. Words are powerful, and Coldplay proves it every time. Guitars, pianos, drums, and even bells appear in this song, contributing to its greatness.

I love sports, and I love the songs that are played at sporting events. Every team should have a celebration song. A song gets played when they score, and a song gets played when they win. It’s cool when people play their own theme song or song when they feel like they’ve won something. What song would be your win song?

For the past few years, the song that I would play and sing along to would be ‘Bad Guy’ by Billie Eilish. It’s super addictive and easy to get under an opponent’s skin! It’s hard not to tap your feet when you hear the beat of it.

I prefer the song way more than I do the music video. It’s a bizarre video, and I found it tough to watch at some points. There’s a part where Eilish’s nose starts bleeding, covering her face in blood, and then there’s another part of the video where you see big guys with bellies bumping up and down. How could you forget the part of the video where she is seen pouring a glass of milk into a guy’s mouth? Bizarre stuff! It is.

I had never watched the music video before today, and I’m honestly glad about that. I had no idea what to expect from it, and now that I’ve watched it, I won’t watch it again! The video does have 1.2 billion views on it, so I guess that’s a good thing. Even though I may not be a fan of the video, I am still a fan of the song.

Billie is a fantastic artist. She has such an extraordinary personality and a unique voice. It’s hard to stand out from the crowd in today’s music scene, but she does it quickly. She brings joy and energy to her music, which is never wrong.

There have been many days over the past few years where I have been happy this song exists so I can sing and dance to it. It’s uplifting but has an intimidating vibe that can be hard to find in music.

Some of my favorite lyrics from the song are, “I do what I want when I’m wanting to, my soul so cynical.” “I’m the bad guy, duh.” It’s got its moments of energy!

Even if this isn’t your go-to win song, I hope you have one! If you don’t, then you should seriously think about getting one!

Just a girl

We live in a world where women’s rights and issues are being brought to our attention. A world trying to become more diverse. A world where everyone should be treated equally no matter the circumstances. Our society is starting to make room for other people and stick up for our issues. We stand up for our rights and protect our freedoms.

One song that notes women being held back is Just A Girl by No Doubt. “I wouldn’t trade being female for anything,” said Gwen Stefani, “but the guys don’t understand what a burden it can be sometimes.”

Lead singer Gwen Stefani is frustrated with her “overprotective parents” for being a girl. The song came out in 1995. Stefani claims that girls are looked at differently. She’d rather not be a girl because if you take a good look at her, she’s your typical prototype.

The song was the first Stefani wrote for the band after her critical songwriter brother left the group. Being part of an all-boy band gave her a different perspective on life. You can see the way that she thought of herself from this song.

It can be seen as a song of liberation. Becoming a woman instead of being “just a girl.” The lyrics below should help paint a picture of the message the band was trying to express.

The band had existed for nine years before this was dropped and had its fair share of ups and downs. The band almost split up in 1987 when the lead singer, John Spencer, died. The song “Just A Girl” put the bar on the map. It landed on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at the 23rd spot.

I love this song because of the messages it conveys and because it has Gwen Stefani in it! I’m a big fan of hers. She is amazing.

Coming from an all-male band, the song also represented female empowerment and unity. All you have to do is take a look at their music video. The band unites by the end of the music video.

The American dream: dark, scary

Did you know that the song Californiacation by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers has a dark meaning? It’s pretty unsettling once you realize it.

Many of us consider California a dream destination, a place we should all go and visit. I want to go there to hang out with Mickey Mouse at Disneyland, but there’s also a whole other side to the state.

California has a large population of surfers and celebrities. Imagine how cool it would be to see one of your idols walking the streets. It would be pretty cool! The Hollywood sign in the City of Angels. What could be so wrong about that?

Californiacation has a dark meaning to it, and we will look at it together. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers hail from Los Angeles and have seen the other side of the California state. The darker side. The side that no one wants you to see. You may not realize it, but Californiacation was inspired by the band’s experience with the wrong side of California.

This ever-popular song came out in 1999 and has been played everywhere. It’s a song about the dark side of American society. The American dream is what many people aspire to have, but there are a bunch of negatives that come with it. Plasticity. Deceit. Desperation. These are some more extreme words to describe the dream which the band noticed.

California isn’t all good, and the band’s song reveals the darkness underneath. A few metaphors and clever lyrics are thrown into the music, alluding to its night. The song was written by band members Kiedis, Smith, Flea, and Frusciante.

The opening verse of the song mentions the broad geographical reach that the state has. It’s a place visited by citizens of many different countries. Both China and Sweden are mentioned in the first two lyrics:

Psychic spies from China try to steal your mind’s elation

And little girls from Sweden dream of silver-screen quotation.

I bet now that we are examining this song in depth, it’s becoming clear that it has some dark messages. Both lyrics show the increased consumerism in the States and how the goals of making it big in Hollywood can lead to disappointment.

It’s Hollywood that sells the idea of California. It’s Hollywood that takes advantage of people believing that it’s the best place in the world. Have you ever had the American dream? What would yours be? Hopefully, it works out for you.

The song may have come out 20 years ago, but the lyrics are still accurate. The music may seem relaxed and laid back, but if you listen to its lyrics, you may have a different opinion. It’s an infectious song, and their music video has over a billion views.

People are never who they seem to be, and neither are places. Earthquakes and tidal waves couldn’t change the world from Californiacation.

Love will miss me when I’m Gone

Love. Don’t you think that it’s a beautiful thing? Sure, love can be painful and hurt, but it helps us gain an appreciation for the word. There are many ways to express your love for someone or something, but it’s essential. Countless love songs exist, and the one that I want to share is special.

A few months ago (June 9), 3 Doors Down celebrated the anniversary of their sophomore album, Away From The Sun. One of the ways that the band celebrated this particular day was by realizing their original music video for their song “When I’m Gone.”

Did you know the video had been buried in the band’s archives for 20 years? That’s hard to believe! The video didn’t come out because the band had the opportunity to perform their song in front of members of the US Military on the USS George Washington.

They made their video with footage from that event. The video has over 160 million views and showcases the band’s live performance mixed with moments of military reunions. It’s probably easy to guess, but this song is about love.

If you’re a fan of the song the band or want to see a video from 20 years ago, then you’re in luck! The video has been up for the past three months and has over a million views.

Marc Klasfeld directed the video, and it takes place in rural Mississippi. The video takes us on an unforgettable journey through a funeral procession and burial ceremony. The intensity of the band’s live performance leads us to an unexpected twist.

Have you heard the song “Lucky Man?” I sure hope so! It’s one of the most popular songs from the British rock band The Verve.

The song came out in 1997 and reached seventh on the UK charts and 16th on the US. A melodic acoustic guitar intro, catchy chorus, and strong lyrics make it a challenging song to forget about.

The song reflects on life and personal growth. It’s an old song that came out during the early days of the band’s beginnings. The band was experimenting with different styles and sounds. Richard Ashcroft, the lead singer and songwriter, created the melody for this tune.

Personal experiences and reflections are what make up this song. I love it when singers share personal stories and feelings through their lyrics. Don’t you find it easier to connect to a piece when its words have meaning? Even William Shakespeare is referenced in the song.
