Chase the Bear

I find it difficult when searching for local bands to eliminate the stigma of listening to a band just because they are local. Sometimes listening to local bands can be viewed as a chore or a responsibility but when I first heard Chase the Bear all of those worries disappeared.

Without question, Chase the bear creates a listening experience that anyone can enjoy with ever-changing sounds and rhythms making every song of theirs a unique listening experience through out their all be it small catalog of songs. But don’t think their few songs don’t hold merit into listening to them as each song holds the weight equivalent to make the band one of the more interesting rock bands to listen to in the year 2022.

The ability to take convention music sounds and completely re define the meaning of rock is what sets this band apart from the rest, and I live when newer, smaller bands are able to differentiate themselves from the status quo.

Chase the Bear is a rock and roll band from Vancouver, BC that also incorporates influences of indie, soul, R&B, and pop. The band gained recognition through their lead vocalist troy due to his powerful, yet smooth vocals. The band was started by brothers, Troy and Leo Gilmore and childhood friends Connor Brooks and Brendan Royer. The group originally lived in Fort St. John until they moved to Vancouver with dreams of making music into a career.

Vancouver Music Videos

Never have I felt more truly Canadian seeing that Nickelback has filmed their new music video for ‘San Quentin’ at Simon Fraser University’s Convocation Mall.

Nickelback gave out an open invitation to “friends and fans” to come and watch as the band performed for the new video with the possibility of being in the video yourself. The tone of this new video is similar to other “performance” music videos the bandhas done, mainly consisting of the band performing the song as if it were a live performance.

During press for their new song and new album to be release November 18, the band revealed that they also plan on going on tour in the year 2023. Hopefully we can get a full Canadian tour so that all provinces can get a taste of the action rather than just Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal.

Vancouver is currently in a crazy season of fall concerts, and we would gladly accept nickelback onto our 2023 list.

As well as Nickelback, Vancouver has their sights on Arkells who just last week filmed their music video ‘Teenage tears’ at Kingsgate Mall in Mount Pleasant along side indie pop duo, Tegan and Sara.

Its obvious that these Canadian artists are appreciating Vancouver’s vast culture for there music videos, with Max Kerman, Arkells front man, taking to twitter referring to the mall as legendary.

Arkells will also be performing October 25th at roger arena following their recent stunt in which they had hid 5 free tickets around the city of Vancouver. The tickets were hidden, in a book, under a table, in a plant, and behind a couch in well-known Vancouver locales.

Gorillaz gave Vancouver a live debut performance of their song New Genius (brother) which released in 2001 on their self-titled Album ‘Gorillaz’ as well as surprising Canadians with guest performances from Bootie Brown, Sweetie Irie, and Pos.

This all being a part of the Gorillaz North American tour in which Vancouver was their fist stop September 11. Sunday marks the first time Gorillaz has come back to Vancouver in 11 years and the first time back to Canada in 8 years. Lead artist Damon Albarn making connections between us Canadians and his British homeland and addressing the shared loss over Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Probably the best moment of the night was when surprise guest Pos came on stage and led the audience in a chant.

“I need you to repeat after me,” he said. “I will never let anyone tell me what to think. I will never let anyone tell me what to say. I will never let anyone tell me who to love. Everyone, I will never let anyone tell me how to feel. I feel strong. I feel confident. And… I FEEL GOOD!”

Albarn somehow managed to make rogers arena feel like a small venue by being incredibly personal with his performance like hugging all his band members going off script and pointing everyone’s attention to an audience member who had a child on there shoulders deemed the ‘wise one’ by Damon as we all wiggled our fingers towards him and chanted ‘wise one’.

Once Bootie Brown had come on stage, he also made note of the infant in the audience which made the arena burst out into laughter.

Vancouver is honored to host the first show in the Gorillaz North American tour. And let’s hope it doesn’t take another 11 years for them to return to Vancouver.

NickelBack is Back… and Metal!

Nickelback is back! Releasing the new single ‘San Quentin’ as well as announcing new album ‘Get Rollin’’ to be released November 18.

Fans have waited 5 years, since their last album ‘Feed the Machine’ released in 2017, for new Nickelback grunge rock anthems. However, some fans were disappointed to see a change in Nickelback’s Style with their new album ‘Get Rollin’’ adopting a new metalcore sound as opposed to the grunge/rock that fans are used too.

However, change can be a good thing as Chad Kroeger has faced his share of controversy for all his vocals sounding the same, even if such remarks could be considered as satirical on the internet, satire can still hold water amongst the collective fans and warp perceptions.

It’s only fitting that after a 5-year gap of new music the band might want to change directions to something they are passionate about. And passionate they are!

“We’ve spent the last few years making a record at a pace that gave us the freedom to create and we can’t wait for everyone to hear the new music,” says Nickelback in a statement. “We’ve missed the fans and look forward to bringing the new songs to life on stage, so let’s ‘Get Rollin’’

I believe a band is performing at their best when they’re focused on something they care about. Time and time again we read about hoe bands break up or quit making new music because they feel burnt out meeting the same demands of fans and that ‘’their new music isn’t as good as their old music.’’

2022 will be the year in history where nickelback enters the metal scene and if they produce music like their new single ‘San Quentin’ I believe Nickelback will earn their space within the metal community on November 18 when ‘Get Rollin’’ Releases.

Broken Social Scene Anniversary Tour

By: Dillon bey

Broken Social Scene is kicking off their North American tour in Vancouver with two performances September 22 and 23 at the Commodore Ballroom.  This tour is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their second album “You Forgot it in People”, originally released in 2002.

Broken Social Scene is a Canadian indie rock band from Toronto created by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning in 1999. The band has a members list too long to count with a very fluid rotation of members, with most members having the ability to leave and work on solo projects/interests and then join back like they had never left. The fluidity of its members makes Broken Social Scene have an ever-changing sound and presence in the modern music scene, drawing influence from their name of “breaking” the social scene.

Due to their changing sounds it’s very difficult to pin-point which genre the band falls under, most would put them under the vast description of an indie rock band although they can fit under so many different genres such as soul, noise pop, post-rock, and so much more. Since their sound is built up of so many different instruments and sounds it is occasionally considered to be baroque pop as it is composed of grand orchestrations.

From guitars and violins to horns and woodwinds, Broken Social Scene combines musical interests of all listeners and warps them on top of each other creating experimental and sometimes chaotic song structures that make them stand out in a crowd. Their ever-changing members and sound cause this band to be constantly evolving and adapting with the times.

In 2021, Pitchfork Listed Broken Social Scene among the “Most important artists” of the last 25 years, both as a collective band and its individual artists. Vancouver better be ready because this Toronto based group is arriving with a mission to “break the social scene”.
