WHL Vancouver Giants Vs Victoria Royals Postgame Analysis

The Vancouver Giants suffered a tough loss to the Victoria Royals last night in a crushing 6-2 defeat.

The game was tied 2-2 at the end of the 1st period, but the Giants couldn’t find a way to get another goal past the Royals’ goaltender, Braden Holt, who didn’t let in a single goal after the 1st period.

 

The Royals stormed back with a goal in the 2nd period, making it 3-2 heading into the 3rd period, where the Royals would only add to their lead by adding 3 more goals for a final score of 6-2.

 

Giants’ goaltender, Brett Mirwald, was in for all 6 goals tonight and faced 35 shots on goal. Despite letting in 6 goals tonight, the team stood strong on the penalty kill, where they killed off 4 penalties. None of the Royals’ goals tonight were on the powerplay.

 

 The Giants’ got their 2 goals from Dylan Anderson and Connor Dale, both of which were their 5th goals of the season. Anderson’s goal was on the powerplay, and Ty Halaburda and Mazden Leslie picked up the assists. Sammy May and Will Subject picked up assists as well on Dale’s goal.

The Giants are back in action in one week, where they will continue their 5-game homestand at the Langet Events Centre. They will play against the Saskatoon Blades, who will be a tough opponent. The Blades hold a record of 34-13-3-1, which is currently good for 3rd place in the Eastern Conference. The Blades are looking to clinch their spot in the playoffs, while the Giants pretty much already have no chance of making it. 

 

The Blades’ leading point-scorer, Trevor Wong, is a Vancouver, BC native, and he currently has 18 goals and 45 assists for 63 points in 51 games. The Blades have 3 other players from BC, which are Jake Chiasson from Abbotsford, Smyth Rebman from Prince George, and Brandon Lisowsky from Port Coquitlam.
