Vancouver’s music scene has many unique bands from some very unique people. There’s something for everyone in the music scene here and it’s hard not to enjoy something. But the one issue that may become evident in the music scene is the lack of representation. There is a very wide range of diverse artists in Vancouver, but maybe not as many as there should be because it may be hard for certain people to get their foot in the door.

But one band that is trying to change that is a band called Queer As Funk. This band is made up of performers who are a part of the queer community and they use that fact to help spread positivity and awareness for queer people. Queer As Funk was formed for a desire to celebrate diversity and to make a change within the music scene in Vancouver. This band has been going on for ten years and has spent their time trying to create more visibility for queer individuals and their communities while also creating great music.

This band is doing a lot of great things to create more visibility for people in the queer community but also for queer people trying to get into the music industry. The music scene isn’t always the easiest to get into for queer people in Vancouver due to the lack of queer community there is in Vancouver. Yes, there are people who are a part of that community who are in the music scene here, but there isn’t as wide a range of people as you’d hope. That’s why a band like Queer As Funk is so important.

I talked to bass player, Catherine Hiltz and they talked about how special this band is and how special this band is with what they’re doing. Hiltz mentioned how impactful it would’ve been for them if they saw a band like Queer As Funk play live because the music is so great and you can dance to it and just have fun, but also seeing queer people performing and doing well is very impactful as well.

Queer As Funk doesn’t have any music you could stream and check out but they do have some great live performances. They have one coming up on New Year’s Eve at The Wise and that is going to be a fantastic show to ring in the new year, so I highly recommend checking it out.

What this band is doing is great and I can’t wait to see what they continue to do moving forward.
