Now is the time to pay attention to soccer in Canada

Have you been paying attention to soccer in Canada? Because if you aren’t, maybe you should be paying a bit more attention.

Soccer in Canada has been booming the past few years with Canada’s women’s team winning an Olympic gold medal in 2021, and Canada’s men’s team playing in the World Cup this past year for the first time since 1986.

There have been more eyes on soccer in Canada than maybe ever before. There are so many reasons to be optimistic about the future as well as both the men’s and women’s teams have great young talent that seems to only be getting better. Those two clubs are headlined by Alphonso Davies and Jessie Fleming and many others as well.

Although soccer may not be as big a spectator sport in Canada as a sport like hockey due to the fact that the biggest leagues aren’t in Canada, we could start seeing a huge increase in interest and viewership in soccer going forward. According to Soccer Canada, soccer is the largest participatory sport in the country. And it’s easy to see why since it’s a relatively cheap sport in comparison to others and it’s very easy for kids to get into and practice since all you really need is a soccer ball and a bit of outdoor space to practice some skills.

Because of this, you would think that we start to see more exceptional young soccer players making it to the national teams and becoming stars in the sport. There is the possibility that we could start seeing more players as good, if not better than someone like Alphonso Davies in the near future.

So if you take a look at the state of soccer in Canada, the future is looking pretty bright. However, that doesn’t mean there haven’t been some issues along the way. The players for both the men’s and women’s teams have had disputes with Soccer Canada over various different things such as poor governance and gender inequity. This has been very disappointing to see because this has been possibly the best time to watch Canadian soccer.

So while there are tons of reasons to be optimistic about the future of soccer in Canada, the issues with Soccer Canada put a bit of a dark cloud over all the good.

But as long as these issues can be solved, soccer in Canada should continue to thrive and you should be excited about where Canada is heading in the future.
