It’s not just a phase, Mom: How these 3 songs defined my teenage years

So, as teenagers, you’ve probably heard the phrase ‘it’s just a phase’ from your parents at some point, especially when it comes to your music tastes. But let me tell you – for me, and I’m sure for many of you too, the music we listened to during our teenage years was far more than just a fad. It shaped who we are, our attitudes, and our experiences. That’s why I wanted to share with you three songs that defined my teenage years.

So, Mom, if you’re reading this, I’m here to tell you that ‘it’s not just a phase, Mom’ – the music I loved as a teenager was a soundtrack to my life, and it still holds a special place in my heart today.

The music we listen to can have a profound impact on our lives as teenagers. For me, the song “Perfect” by Simple Plan was one of those songs that defined my teenage years. It’s a song that speaks to the struggles I faced as a teenager – the pressure to be perfect, the fear of not measuring up, and the frustration that comes with feeling like you’re never good enough.

The lyrics of “Perfect” are relatable and raw, capturing the anxieties and insecurities that many of us feel as we navigate our teenage years. Lines like “Did I grow up according to plan?” and “I’m sorry I can’t be perfect” were two lines that I felt growing up having communication issues with my dad along with all these anxieties and insecurities back then.

What I love about “Perfect” is that it’s not just a song that talks about problems – it also shows that as teenagers we just want to be understood in the form of understanding, words of affirmation, and just support. Back then, I felt that my parents probably didn’t have the same problems growing up as they grew up in a totally different era, a different standard of parenting that came along with it but then instead of trying to make it up to my sister and me, it just ended up them becoming their parents. Whew, digging deep with emotional trauma. I was an emotional kid okay!? Well, I’m still a bit now.

“Perfect” is a song that has stood the test of time – it was released in 2003, but its message is just as relevant today as it was back then. It’s a song that helped me feel less alone during a time when I was struggling to figure out who I was and what I wanted out of life, and I know that many other teenagers can relate to it too.

In a world that often tells us early on that, we need to be perfect to be worthy, “Perfect” is a much-needed reminder that we are all imperfect, and that’s okay. It’s a song that celebrates our flaws and encourages us to be ourselves, and that’s a message that I think we can all benefit from, no matter what age we are.

Dashboard Confessional’s “Stolen” is another song that holds a special place in my heart. When I was a teenager and had a crush on someone, this song would often be playing in the background of my thoughts.

“Stolen” captures the feeling of being head-over-heels for someone, the butterflies in your stomach that won’t go away no matter how hard you try. The lyrics speak to the longing and yearning that come with falling in love, and the vulnerability that comes with putting your heart on the line.

Listening to “Stolen” brings back memories of the rush of emotions that come with having a crush. The song’s acoustic melody and heartfelt lyrics make it a perfect backdrop for those moments of daydreaming and wonder.

And while my teenage crushes may be long gone, “Stolen” still holds a special place in my heart. It’s a reminder of the power of music to capture our emotions and bring us back to moments in time that we hold dear.

So, for anyone out there who’s crushing on someone and getting those butterflies, I encourage you to put on “Stolen” and let it take you on a journey of emotions. Let it remind you that falling in love can be scary and exciting all at once, but that it’s worth it in the end.

After all, music has a way of speaking to our hearts like nothing else can, and “Stolen” is one of those songs that speaks to the heart of what it means to be human – to love and to long for something more.

My Chemical Romance’s “Welcome to the Black Parade” is widely considered the national anthem of emo, and it’s a song that every emo kid knows and holds dear to their heart. It’s a song that summarizes the life of being emo and acts as a rallying cry for all emos to join together. Once that first piano note hit, I know it. You know it. Everybody knows it.

The song starts with a slow piano melody, building up to an explosive guitar riff that grabs your attention from the very beginning. The lyrics, which tell the story of a dying man reflecting on his life, are deeply emotive and relatable. The chorus, with its famous line “We’ll carry on,” has become a rallying cry for the emo community, encouraging us to keep going no matter how tough things may get.

As an emo kid growing up, “Welcome to the Black Parade” was more than just a song – it was a way of life. The song spoke to us on a deep level, capturing the emotions and struggles that we were going through. It was a reminder that we weren’t alone and that there were others out there who felt the same way we did.

The song also became a symbol of the emo community, bringing us together and giving us a sense of belonging. Back then, I was bullied for being different. There were the cool kids, and there were the outcasts. The ones who didn’t have any group to belong to because it didn’t exist back then and anything out of the norm, was considered as a lower class per se in the kingdom of high school. It was a song that we could all sing along to, no matter where we were or who we were with. When the song played at emo nights or concerts, the crowd would come alive, singing every word and throwing their fists in the air.

Even though the emo scene has changed and evolved over the years, “Welcome to the Black Parade” remains a timeless classic that still resonates with emo kids today. It’s a song that will always hold a special place in our hearts, a song that we can all stand up and salute to as the national anthem of emo.
