Chvrches

Emerging bands that shine in the electronic torrent: Chvrches

Chvrches (CHVRCHΞS) from Glasgow, Scotland plays Synth-Pop, featuring female vocals Lauren Mayberry (vocals/synth/samples), Iain Cook (synth/guitar/bass/chorus) and Martin The Doherty (synth/sample/chorus) trio formed in 2011. The two-man-one-woman group started in 2012 and released the critically acclaimed debut album “The Bones of What You Believe” the following year (2013).

Before forming Chvrches, Iain Cook was a member of “Aereogramme and The Unwinding Hours” and also wrote songs for film and TV; Martin Doherty was a live musician for “The Twilight Sad”; and Lauren Mayberry just left Long (She has a LL.B. and an M.J. in journalism), is a freelance journalist, and is the lead singer and drummer of the Blue Sky Archives band.

Originally, they chose the English word “churches”, but in order to avoid confusion with the real church when others searched for the group name on the Internet, they replaced the “u” with the Roman letter “v” with the same pronunciation. What’s more interesting is that the band has nothing to do with religion, they just thought the name sounded cool.

Chvrches music gives a clean sound. Generally, their musical style is considered to be Synth-Pop, while absorbing elements of Indie Electronic, Indie Pop and Electronic Dance.

I liked the song Good Girl from their album Screen Violence, which they released last year. The female lead singer once again criticized the stereotyped framework established by this society for women, as well as the unreasonable thinking of brainwashing. Suddenly there was something we didn’t think was unfair growing up, and after Lauren raised her point of view, she seemed to wake up. The original inspiration for the song was when Lauren was chatting with a group of friends at a bar one day about some issues with a male artist, and she was surprised that these friends were trying to defend the male artist. Even if male artists do a lot of things they shouldn’t, everyone seems to be more tolerant and tolerant towards male artists, and it may be bad to a very bad level before everyone can start boycotting him. Women are taught from childhood that it is safer to live a low-key life in order to be a good girl. Lauren believes this is not right and that women should fight for their own survival and for their rights. But it seems that the brainwashing of the society is very deep, so that it is obviously a bad thing, but because of different genders, the acceptance of the public is also different.
