Netflix fare can run its course. If you’re itching to leave your apartment this weekend, here’s a local gem. In honour of Remembrance Day, Vancouver’s The Cinematheque will present a screening of Ridge on Saturday, November 7th.
Ridge is a film about the WWI Battle of Vim Ridge, also known as “the battle that made Canada”. Vim Ridge battle took place in April of 1917 in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France. More than ten thousand Canadian soldiers lost their lives on this day. Ridge stars actor Brendan McLeod an award-winning Canadian actor, author and musician. McLeod has taught spoken word at Langara College and arts organizations such as Wordplay, Prologue and Vancouver Biennale.
The delivery of this production is unique, as it includes documentary theatre and live music. You’ll hear real songs from WWI performed with a modern interpretation. The use of documentary theatre seeks to bring the audience back in time, as actors deliver lines from first-hand historical accounts. Ridge aims to tell the story from multiple points of view while examining crucial historical events that occurred during Canada’s deadliest war. More importantly, Ridge will explore the emotional impact of this great loss of life.
Ridge will be an excellent opportunity to learn about a monumental event in Canadian history, presented with contemporary, artistic flair. As we continue to work and study from home, it has become easy for us to lose interest in the outside world.
