Schitt’s Creek Wins Big For Canada

Drop everything you’re currently watching and start binging Schitt’s Creek on Netflix.  The Canadian produced comedy television show swept up at the Emmys last night by taking home nine out of 19 nominations. Three of these Emmys went to the show’s creator, producer, actor, and writer Dan Levy. So where does all the excitement come from?

Synopsis

Schitt’s Creek centers around the eccentric Rose family who have recently gone from riches to rags after a failed business venture. They are forced to move to the small town of Schitt’s Creek, previously purchased as a joke, and adjust to life living in a dingy hotel in close quarter with each other.

Growing Audience

If you’ve only just started hearing the hype around Schitt’s Creek within the last year or two you aren’t alone. It’s only after the series has ended that it’s garnered considerable attention. The comedy aired on Canadian television in 2015. It was being fully funded by the CBC for the first year of production until Pop tv, an American company picked it up in 2015 and aired the first episode in February of the same year. Schitt’s Creek has always done well during Canadian Screen Awards, the Canadian version of the Emmys, but went relatively unnoticed on American tv. That is until Netflix started streaming the comedy series. Suddenly it started growing an audience. In 2018 Schitt’s Creek received nominations from MTV Movies & TV awards. 2019 they were nominated for 4 Emmys but ultimately lost. Queue 2020.
