Update, March 19, 2019: Our sincere congratulations go out to Selkirk College in Castlegar, named BC’s Coolest Campus! Congratulations to the Selkirk community for a super effort. We have sent them a BCIT hoodie to donate to a charity of their choice!
Did you know?
At BCIT, natural gas use is responsible for 90% of our greenhouse gas emissions, mainly for heating and hot water in buildings.
To reduce our carbon footprint at work and at home, BCIT is joining other post-secondary institutions in the BC Cool Campus Challenge to promote energy conservation across the province.
What is the BC Cool Campus Challenge?
BCIT, UBC, SFU, Selkirk College, and TRU are challenging each other to reduce natural gas use and to encourage campus community members to take energy conservation actions by signing the Cool Campus Pledge that runs from January 7 to February 28.
During the challenge period, students, staff and faculty are encouraged to voluntarily turn down their heat by 1 to 3°C, and to wear warmer clothes. This challenge not only reduces climate impact, but also demonstrates climate leadership and initiates the conversation for addressing energy dependency, resiliency, conservation and renewable energy resources.
How to take part in the BC Cool Campus Challenge?
Take the pledge and commit to saving energy from January 7 to February 28 in the following ways:
- Turning down the heat by 1 to 3°C, at BCIT and at home.
- Layering up in warmer clothes.
- Taking shorter showers.
- Washing laundry in cold water.
What are the incentives?
- All pledge takers will be entered into a draw at the end of February for BCIT sweaters.
- The institution that collects the most pledges from January 7 to February 28 will be named as the Coolest Campus in BC.
- The winning institution will receive bragging rights, in addition to a branded sweater from each of the participating institutions. On behalf of the participating institutions, the winning team will donate all the warm clothing items to a local charitable organization to keep more people warm this heating season.
- Most importantly, everyone wins when climate change is reduced.
Take the Pledge and spread the word by tagging BCIT and using #BCCoolCampus!
The BCIT Green Team is going to be in the Great Hall on Thursday February 7 from 10:00 to 1:00 talking about the Challenge and taking pledges. Come on out and say Hi, learn how simple actions can save natural gas, and get a free hot chocolate, tea, or soup!
