BCIT’s Communication Department is offering a new badge in Communication for Team-based Collaboration, created by faculty member Lisa Allen. Learn more about the badge in our Q&A with Lisa – maybe it could help you or your team!
Q: Who is the new Communication for Team-based Collaboration badge for?
Lisa: This badge is for anyone looking to hone their communication skills in a team setting.
Q: Why did you want to create it?
Lisa: We often include teamwork as part of the learning objectives in our BCIT communication courses. It’s a valuable skill; almost all students go on to work in team settings once they graduate. So, learning to work and communicate as a team is critical for success in industry. We created the Communication for Team-based Collaboration (XCOM1000) badge for students who want experience and practice working and communicating in a team.
XCOM1000 counts for credit toward the Associate Certificate in Technical Writing
Q: Can you tell me more about the approach taken, the kinds of things students might do?
Lisa: This badge focuses on communication in team settings. Therefore, students will work collaboratively in a group. Throughout the course, students will apply their communication skills while reflecting on topics like: professional empathy, teamwork, conflict resolution, intercultural and interpersonal communication.
Q: Where do you think these collaboration skills are most needed in industry?
Lisa: These skills are needed wherever people are collaborating and working in teams (which is everywhere!). This badge provides students with the opportunity to develop the foundational skills needed to work and communicate in a team setting.
