The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) has been named one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity 2024 by Forbes.
The annual rankings are developed by Forbes and Statista through an independent survey of 40,000 professionals across all industry sectors, with eligible companies employing at least 500 employees. The evaluation is based on three criteria: personal recommendations, public recommendations, and diversity key performance indicators such as gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, and disability.
Respect, Diversity, and Inclusion at BCIT
As one of BC’s largest post-secondary institutes with five campuses and over 45,000 students enrolled each year, BCIT is committed to prioritizing an environment that promotes a sense of belonging. All staff, students, and faculty have the right to learn and work in an environment free of ableism, harassment, discrimination, sexual violence, and racism.
The Respect, Diversity, and Inclusion (RDI) department helps BCIT foster a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment by creating awareness and belonging through education, events, training, and tools. The RDI team provides confidential assistance, support, and advice on issues related to equity, diversity, and inclusion to students, staff, and faculty at BCIT. Their efforts further BCIT’s values for championing diversity and inclusion, engaging with respect, and pursing collaboration.
Supporting diversity through online learning
While Respectful Workplaces training is mandatory for all BCIT employees, optional Free Online Learning courses are available to all BCIT students, staff, and faculty – as well as the general public. With topics such as anti-racism, human rights, and relearning gender, the courses have been accessed by more than 1900 individuals – 1100 of them BCIT employees.
