BCIT shines a light on how IoT is changing the world

We live in a data-driven world and this data is changing the way we work and live.

Using IoT devices to manage water supply in Kenya. Families walk miles a day to find a dry water pump, they can now view local water pumps on a phone or desktop dashboard telling them which facility has a functioning water supply.

IoT data is changing the future of farming. With better data, guessing is no longer part of the decision process for farming. Data-driven farming shows sustainable annual yield growth and IoT sensors are providing the data to prove it.

From a laptop, a wheat farmer can detect which area of his farm needs more fertilizer, or a piece of equipment that needs repairing. Now a fifth-generation farmer in Alberta can sleep at night knowing his farm is flourishing and his family and the people who buy his wheat will reap the benefits.

IoT technology is the keystone for organizations digital transformation, empowering them to learn how to upgrade their existing processes successfully. 90% of organizations consider IoT as critical to the overall success of their business.

The BCIT Centre for Internet of Things (IoT) is introducing a new self-paced course teaching the practical implementation of IoT in different market segments by analyzing current real-world case studies. In addition, you will understand how IoT can help protect and sustain our fragile world by collecting valuable information about ocean pollution, climate change, and biodiversity.

“BCIT Centre of IoT is at the forefront of this emerging technology,” says Kim Dotto, Dean, Applied Research and Centre for Applied Research and Innovation. “This new micro-credential will expand on how IoT will change the way we work and live, and the challenges inherent in adopting this new technology.”

“This course is open to anyone interested in learning how IoT can be used in key market segments from utilities to digital health care to smart transportation,” says Johny Bassan, Director, Centre for Internet of Things. “Decision-makers who are called upon to evaluate and implement IoT solutions will appreciate the creative solutions offered by IoT.”

About BCIT Centre for the Internet of Things (IoT)

The Centre for Internet of Things will keep BCIT at the forefront of this emerging technology and digital transformation with advanced hands-on education and trainingindustry collaboration, and research.

The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to the billions of physical devices around the world that are now connected to the Internet, all collecting and sharing data. Connecting all these different objects and adding sensors to them adds a level of digital intelligence, enabling them to communicate real-time data without involving a human being. The IoT is making the fabric of the world around us smarter and more responsive, bridging the physical and digital worlds.
