BCIT launches Sustainability Vision

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is excited to announce the launch of the Institute’s first Sustainability Vision.

The BCIT Sustainability Vision reflects the interests of the nearly 800 students, faculty, staff, and partners who provided their input on sustainability at BCIT, and outlines a path for continued integration of sustainability through BCIT policies, practices, and culture.

“The launch of the BCIT Sustainability Vision represents a significant milestone in BCIT’s Strategic Plan, and is integral to fulfilling our commitment to a people-focused organization, future proof education, and globally relevant connections,” said Kathy Kinloch, President, BCIT. “Through our operations, programming, and partnerships with industry our community is committed to improving sustainability across BC and around the globe. I truly believe we have an opportunity to make a real and positive difference in our world.”

Enabling people to live socially just lives within ecological limits

The Vision defines sustainability as enabling people to live socially just lives within ecological limits, and the strategies it outlines support this. These strategies include changes in day-to day practice, advancing sustainable procurement, exploring sustainability through applied research and curriculum renewal, redeveloping our campuses as living labs, participating in international sustainability accountability reporting, continuing to build on the legacy of the Ecocity World Summit through the Ecocity Centre, and facilitating ongoing community dialogue about sustainability with our students, staff, and partners at home and around the world.

“BCIT’s first Sustainability Vision charts an exciting but complex journey for the Institute. It will be an exercise in tenacity and change management, underpinned by cross-functional and interdisciplinary collaboration,” said Dr. Jennie Moore, Director, Institute Sustainability, who also leads the Vision’s implementation. “We are looking forward to working with our colleagues, our students, and our partners to create meaningful change.”
