The second annual National Geomatics Competition was recently held at the University of Calgary with 12 teams of Geomatics students coming from universities and institutions across Canada to compete.
Benoit Chevrette, Katie Conconi, and Meghan McLellan, third year students in the Geomatics Bachelor of Science degree program, did an excellent job of presenting their solution at this year’s competition. The challenge was to come up with a plan to relocate 35,000 displaced Columbians within a specified geographical region while taking into consideration this year’s theme of “Innovating Earth”.
During the challenge, students were given six hours to come up with a land use plan, cadastral system, implement a budget and create an exit plan to help educate the local community on leaving a sustainable solution behind. The three students were required to present their final project to a panel of industry judges and knowledgeably answer questions about their solution.

The competition is run by the Geomatics Student Society from each participating institution and relies on student volunteers and sponsorship from industry. Congratulations to the BCIT team for a strong performance!
