BCIT announces new Associate VP, Education Support and Innovation

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is pleased to announce that James Rout has accepted the role of Associate Vice-President, Education Support and Innovation. James joined BCIT as director of Library Services on April 1, 2016. His new role as Associate VP, Education Support and Innovation, began on November 14, 2016.

James has more than 15 years of leadership experience in higher education in areas including teaching and learning, libraries, archives, and educational technology support services. He has twice been nominated for national innovation awards and in 2009 received the CTCL Innovation Achievement award from the Canadian Library Association.

During his time at Emily Carr University as Associate Vice-President, Learning Services and Information Technologies, James led the Library and Archives, the Teaching and Learning Centre, and the Information Technology Services departments. He has significant experience with major campus development projects and with the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning environments. He was deeply engaged in planning for the new Emily Carr University campus, as well as planning for a new Library and Archives facility in the Kinnear Centre for Innovation and Creativity during his time at The Banff Centre.

James is currently completing his fourth year of PhD studies in Educational Technology and Learning Design at Simon Fraser University, and he’s a strong advocate for open education, self-directed learning, and instructional technology.
