Forensic Health Sciences Instructor in the Abbotsford News

February 11, 2016 by Julia Dreyer

Evidence of violence: forensic nurses balance health care and justice. The Forensic Nursing Service began in Surrey in 1992 and expanded to Abbotsford in 1999. Since then, patient volumes in Abbotsford have grown considerably, from just 10 in the program’s first year at ARH, to 68 in 2013, and up to 106 last year. Across the province, forensic nursing services vary from stand-alone services like Fraser Health’s, to sexual assault response teams that include examiners.

Susan Short was the first student to complete the BCIT Advanced Specialty Certificate in Forensic Science Technology – Forensic Health Sciences Option, with Distinction. Building on that certificate, she has completed the courses for a BCIT Bachelor of Technology in Forensic Science.  Susan has also been teaching for BCIT since 2006.

Our Forensic Health Sciences (FHS) program is designed for health care workers involved in forensic examinations as well as for the law enforcement, legal and scientific professionals that must interact with them during a forensic investigation.

Currently, the FHS option is one of the only multidisciplinary programs available in Canada for with experts in the fields of forensic toxicology, forensic pathology, forensic nursing, criminal justice, forensic scientists and many others.
