Calpurnia: The Indie Sensation with a Bright Future

Calpurnia is more than just a band; they are a rising indie sensation, a collective of young talents who have captured the hearts of music enthusiasts around the world. Formed in Vancouver, Canada, in 2017, the band’s meteoric rise to fame has been nothing short of remarkable. In this article, we’ll explore their journey, distinctive sound, and promising future and show you why you should follow them.

A Star-Studded Origin:

Calpurnia was brought into the limelight thanks in part to its lead singer and frontman, Finn Wolfhard. Wolfhard, widely recognized for his role as Mike Wheeler in the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things,” is not just an actor but also a passionate musician. His collaboration with friends led to the formation of Calpurnia, a band named after Julius Caesar’s wife, Calpurnia.

Distinctive Sound:

Calpurnia’s music is characterized by its blend of indie rock, alternative, and post-punk influences. With catchy guitar riffs, melodic bass lines, and Finn Wolfhard’s distinctive vocals, their sound is both nostalgic and refreshingly modern. Tracks like “Greyhound” and “Louie” showcase the band’s ability to craft infectious melodies that linger in your mind. These are my favourite songs from them and two you should definitely check out!

Debut EP “Scout”:

In 2018, Calpurnia released their debut EP, “Scout,” which was met with critical acclaim. The EP features a collection of tracks that exude youthful energy and authenticity. “City Boy,” the lead single from the EP, became a standout hit and introduced the band to a wider audience. While I’m not the biggest fan of this EP, “Scout” is a great track nonetheless and one I can recommend to you as well.

Despite their youth, Calpurnia’s future in the music industry looks incredibly promising. They have already achieved significant success with their debut EP and have embarked on tours, earning a dedicated fan base along the way. Their continued growth as musicians and songwriters bodes well for their future.

One such band that has been making waves in recent years is Daysormay, a Canadian indie rock group that is capturing hearts and ears with their distinctive sound and captivating performances. Songs like “Role Model” and “The Trend” are prime examples of their ability to craft catchy yet thought-provoking tunes. These two tracks are my favourite from the album and overall, it’s a solid debut album. Give them a listen, these two songs are sure not to disappoint.

Skinny Puppy: Pioneers of Industrial Music

Skinny Puppy is a band with great influence in the industrial genre. For over three decades, this Canadian electronic band has been pushing the boundaries of music, sound, and performance art. Having lots of longevity and creativity, Skinny Puppy has left an indelible mark on the alternative music landscape. If you’re a fan of industrial sounds, this article is for you.

A Twisted Birth:

Formed in Vancouver in 1982 by cEvin Key (Kevin Crompton) and Nivek Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie), Skinny Puppy was one of the first bands to fully embrace and define the industrial genre. Drawing inspiration from bands like Throbbing Gristle and Einstürzende Neubauten, they created a sound that was unsettling, aggressive, and profoundly experimental.

Early Releases:

Skinny Puppy’s early releases, including “Remission” (1984) and “Bites” (1985), were instrumental in shaping the industrial sound. These albums featured a combination of distorted synthesizers, pounding rhythms, and Ogre’s distorted and often surreal vocals. Tracks like “Assimilate” and “The Choke” exemplify the band’s pioneering approach to electronic music. These are tracks I highly recommend to first time listeners and are two of my favourite tracks from them.

Innovation and Experimentation:

Skinny Puppy’s music was characterized by its willingness to experiment with technology and sound manipulation. They used samplers, synthesizers, and a variety of unconventional instruments to create an auditory assault that challenged traditional notions of music. Their 1987 album “Cleanse Fold and Manipulate” pushed the boundaries of industrial music further, showcasing their innovative approach.

Themes and Lyrics:

One of Skinny Puppy’s defining features is their thought-provoking and often disturbing lyrical content. Their songs explore themes of technology, dehumanization, addiction, and social and political commentary. Tracks like “Worlock” and “Testure” confront the listener with provocative and sometimes unsettling narratives, challenging them to confront uncomfortable truths. In times when pop can feel shallow and production line like, Skinny Puppy provides a refreshing escape.

Breakup and Resurgence:

Skinny Puppy faced internal struggles and a temporary breakup in the early 1990s. However, they returned in 2000 with a new album, “The Greater Wrong of the Right.” The album showcased a more melodic and accessible sound while still retaining the band’s signature darkness. This resurgence solidified their status as industrial music pioneers.

Legacy:

Skinny Puppy’s legacy in the world of industrial music is undeniable. They laid the foundation for countless artists and bands in the genre, influencing the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, and Marilyn Manson, among others. Their sonic experimentation and willingness to tackle taboo subjects have made them a touchstone for those seeking to push the boundaries of music and art. Hotel Mira: Evolving Not Revolving

Are you a fan of alternative rock? Are you looking for new bands to get into? If so, Hotel Mira is a great pick. Hotel Mira, a Vancouver-based alternative rock band, stands out for their unique blend of sound, storytelling, and authenticity.

Hotel Mira, formerly known as JPNSGRLS, underwent a transformation in 2018 with a change in name and a refreshed musical direction. The band consists of Charlie Kerr (vocals/guitar), Colton Lauro (guitar), Mike Noble (bass), and Clark Grieve (drums). Their evolution into Hotel Mira marked a turning point in their musical journey, allowing them to explore new sonic territories while staying true to their indie rock roots.

Hotel Mira’s music is a mix of elements of alternative rock, punk, and pop. Their sound is characterized by infectious guitar riffs, dynamic rhythms, and Kerr’s distinctively expressive vocals. The band’s ability to craft catchy hooks and memorable melodies is evident in tracks like “Ginger Ale” and “Jungle.” Two of my favourite tracks from them that you should definitely check out. I’ve been a fan of their songs for several years now but these two tracks are my go-tos because they always fill me with energy.

Hotel Mira has released several singles and EPs, each offering a glimpse into their evolving sound. “3 AM Lullaby” and “Speaking Off The Record” are standout tracks that showcase their musical growth and lyrical depth. The band’s debut album, “Perfectionism,” released in 2020, further solidified their place in the indie rock scene.

  • 1. “Ginger Ale”: The album opens with “Ginger Ale,” a vibrant track that immediately sets the tone for what’s to come. With catchy guitar riffs and Charlie Kerr’s distinctive vocals, this song is a perfect introduction to Hotel Mira’s energetic sound.
  • 2. “Speaking Off The Record”: One of the album’s standout tracks, “Speaking Off The Record” is a masterclass in blending thoughtful lyrics with a compelling melody. Kerr’s song writing shines here as he dives into the complexities of relationships and self-reflection.
  • 3. “Better on Your Own”: This track combines driving rhythms and Kerr’s emotive vocals to create something you can easily vibe along too. The chorus is especially infectious, making it a memorable highlight of the album.
  • 4. “Perfectionism”: The title track, “Perfectionism,” is an exploration of the pursuit of flawlessness in an imperfect world. The song’s sombre tone, coupled with Kerr’s heartfelt delivery, leaves a lasting impression.
  • 5. “3 AM Lullaby”: A musical departure from the rest of the album, “3 AM Lullaby” is a stripped-down ballad that showcases Hotel Mira’s versatility. Kerr’s vocals take centre stage here, delivering an emotional and touching performance.

 

I think this album is a super solid first album, easily an 8/10 from me. As Hotel Mira continues to evolve and experiment with their sound, their future in the music industry looks promising. Their willingness to push boundaries while maintaining their authentic voice sets them apart as a band with the potential for enduring success. So what are you waiting for? The Brian Jonestown Massacre At The Vogue Theatre

Well you’re in luck as psychedelic and alternative rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre has a show at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver this Thursday night at 8PM. Known for their mesmerizing blend of swirling guitars, ethereal melodies, and charismatic frontman Anton Newcombe, this iconic group has been captivating audiences for over three decades. 

A Brief History:

Formed in San Francisco in 1990, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, often abbreviated as BJM, took their name from a morbid juxtaposition of Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones and the infamous Jonestown Massacre. From their inception, the band adopted a DIY ethos, self-releasing albums and embracing a sound that paid homage to the psychedelic rock of the 1960s while pushing sonic boundaries.

Prolific Discography:

Over the years, BJM has amassed a prolific discography, with over 20 studio albums and numerous EPs, singles, and live recordings. Each release is a sonic adventure, exploring various facets of psychedelic rock, shoegaze, and even experimental and folk influences. Albums like “Methodrone,” “Take It from the Man!,” and “Their Satanic Majesties’ Second Request” are regarded as classics within the genre. I highly recommend these albums if you haven’t heard them, they are some of my favourites within the genre.

Anton Newcombe: The Visionary Leader

At the heart of BJM is Anton Newcombe, a musical visionary known for his multi-instrumental prowess, song writing talent, and bright persona. Newcombe’s presence looms large over the band’s catalogue, with his unique vocals and willingness to push musical boundaries defining the BJM sound. His charismatic and often controversial personality has added an intriguing layer to the band’s narrative.

Collaborations and Connections:

BJM’s influence extends far beyond their own music. They have collaborated with artists such as The Dandy Warhols and have shared stages with iconic bands like My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Additionally, the documentary film “Dig!” chronicled the tumultuous relationship between BJM and The Dandy Warhols, offering a glimpse into the band’s inner workings.

Live Performances:

A BJM live show is a mesmerizing experience. The band’s performances are known for their improvisational nature, with extended instrumental jams that transport audiences into a hypnotic trance. Anton Newcombe’s dynamic stage presence and the chemistry among the band members create an electric atmosphere that lingers long after the music ends, more reasons to go to tonight’s show if you have the time!

Hozier – Unreal Unearth Tour 2023 Vancouver Stop

Something big is happening in Vancouver, Hozier, the Irish alternative music icon known for his hauntingly beautiful music with political and social messages, is coming to Rogers Arena. As a stop of his 2023 Unreal Unearth tour, he will be playing at Rogers Arena on Sunday, Oct 22nd at 8PM. If you’re a Hozier fan or just like his music, I’m hoping you have grabbed tickets already cause they’re all sold out.

One of Hozier’s defining features is his distinctive baritone voice. It’s a voice that possesses a rare combination of power and vulnerability, capable of conveying a wide range of emotions. Whether he’s crooning a heartfelt ballad or belting out a passionate chorus, Hozier’s vocals are instantly recognizable and etch themselves into your memory.

Hozier’s song writing is another standout aspect. His lyrics are poetic, exploring themes of love, longing, spirituality, and the human condition. He’s also not afraid to take a stand and deliver political/social messages. “Take Me To Church” is his breakthrough hit and remains one of his biggest songs to date. It’s also the song I love the most from him. I love that he’s taking a stand for the LGBTQ+ communities that are being discriminated against in different parts of the world. Tracks like “Take Me to Church” and “Cherry Wine” are prime examples of his ability to craft storytelling songs that strike a chord with audiences worldwide. His lyrics are thought-provoking, and they invite listeners to explore the depths of their own emotions. 

One quote I love from him is “I assure you if I wanted to make a f**king pop song I would have written a pop song, because it would have been far easier”. Musically, Hozier’s work is a blend of folk, blues, soul, and alternative rock influences. He skillfully weaves together acoustic and electric elements. His debut self-titled album, “Hozier,” and its follow-up, “Wasteland, Baby!,” showcase his musical versatility, moving from stripped-down ballads to more upbeat and anthemic tracks. Whether you’re experiencing the euphoria of new love or grappling with the pain of loss, there’s a Hozier song that can provide solace and understanding.

In an era when mainstream music can often feel formulaic, Hozier’s music stands out as a breath of fresh air. It’s deeply rooted in authenticity and emotional depth. If you have already bought tickets to his show, I must say I’m very jealous. If you haven’t, don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll be back soon enough.  Now excuse me as I blast “Take Me To Church” on full volume!

 

Album Review: Apollo By The Tourist Company

Released in 2016, “Apollo” by The Tourist Company offers a refreshing and immersive escape into a world of alternative rock and pop. The Vancouver-based indie rock band’s third studio album, “Apollo,” is filled with lush instrumentation, imaginative lyrics, and a sense of cosmic exploration. If this sounds like your thing, read on to find out my thoughts on the album.

Tracklist Overview: “Apollo” is a meticulously crafted album, featuring ten tracks that seamlessly flow into one another. Each song contributes to the overarching narrative, creating a cohesive listening experience that feels like a complete story. The album’s title, a nod to the Greek god of music and poetry, aptly sets the stage for the musical journey that awaits.

Expansive Soundscapes: From the opening notes of “The Space Race,” it becomes clear that The Tourist Company has embraced a more expansive sound compared to their previous work. The album is awash with rich layers of instrumentation, including dreamy synths, delicate guitar work, and a dynamic rhythm section. This combo serves as the perfect backdrop for Taylor Swindells’ emotive vocals.

Emotional Depth: It’s easy to feel lost in such a chaotic world, if you’re going through a journey of self discovery, “Apollo” will strike a chord as it centers on themes of self-discovery, personal growth, and the search for meaning in a world that often feels overwhelming. Tracks like “Apollo” and “Conflicted” are particularly powerful, showcasing Swindells’ lyrical prowess and ability to convey complex emotions. 

Stellar Highlights: While the entire album is a standout work of art, certain tracks shine brightly. “Stargazer” is a masterpiece that captures the wonder of gazing at the night sky. The hauntingly beautiful “Scars & Stripes” explores themes of love and vulnerability with a mesmerizing melody that lingers in the mind. “Terminus” serves as a captivating closer, leaving listeners with a sense of hope. These three songs are my favourite on an album that packs a punch. 

Evolution of Style: “Apollo” represents a significant evolution in The Tourist Company’s musical style. While their earlier work was characterized by a more folk-influenced sound, this album ventures into alternative rock and dream-pop territory. This shift allows the band to explore new sonic textures and experiment with a broader range of emotions.

Immersive Production: The album’s production quality is top-notch, with every instrument and vocal track expertly mixed and balanced. The attention to detail in the production enhances the album’s immersive qualities, enveloping the listener in a space that feels both familiar and otherworldly.

Overall, “Apollo” by The Tourist Company is a masterclass in alternative rock artistry. The album blends rich instrumentation with heartfelt lyrics. It’s an album that rewards repeated listens, with each playthrough revealing new layers and nuances to appreciate. “Apollo” firmly establishes The Tourist Company as a band to watch, and their musical journey is one that fans and newcomers alike should eagerly join. Formed in 2014 in Vancouver, Canada, this talented quartet has been making waves with their dreamy melodies and charisma. If you’re into alternative sounds, do not miss this article.

The story of Peach Pit begins with a music project between high school friends Neil Smith and Chris Vanderkooy. Sparks turned into action and they got the idea to form a group. Joined by bassist Peter Wilton and drummer Mikey Pascuzzi, the band found their unique sound and formed Peach Pit.

What sets Peach Pit apart is their ability to craft irresistibly catchy melodies. Their songs often feature jangly guitar riffs, mellow rhythms, and Smith’s distinctively smooth and honeyed vocals. Tracks like “Seventeen” and “Shampoo Bottles” are perfect examples of their knack for crafting infectious tunes that stick in your head long after the music stops. I still have those two songs stuck in my head!

Peach Pit’s lyrics delve into themes of love and relationships with their own twist on them. Their storytelling is filled with vulnerability, allowing listeners to connect with the universal experiences and emotions they explore. We’ve all gone through breakups, I’m sure you have too. Whether singing about the complexities of youth or the nuances of modern romance, Peach Pit’s lyrics resonate on a deep level.

Peach Pit gained significant recognition with their debut full album, “Being So Normal,” released in 2017. The album’s standout track, “Peach Pit,” became a viral hit on Spotify, propelling the band into the alternative music spotlight. Their relatable lyrics and laid-back sound struck a chord with a rapidly growing fan base.

The band continued to evolve with their sophomore album, “You and Your Friends,” released in 2020. This record showcased a more refined and mature sound, as Peach Pit explored new sonic territories while staying true to their indie roots. Tracks like “Black Licorice” and “Camilla, I’m at Home” demonstrated their ability to experiment while maintaining their distinctive style. I love this album and for me, this is their best album yet. 

Peach Pit’s relatable lyrics and down-to-earth personalities make listeners feel like they’re part of the Peach Pit family. The band’s active engagement on social media further strengthens this sense of connection.

Jesse Jo Stark’s “The Doomed Tour” Brings Grit and Glamour to Vancouver

Adding to Vancouver’s vibrant alternative music scene, the city will be treated to a night of electrifying rock ‘n’ roll as Jesse Jo Stark brings her “The Doomed Tour” to town. With a reputation for blending gritty garage rock with dark, glamorous aesthetics, Jesse Jo Stark is sure to put on a show that’s hard for you to forget. 

The Venue: Happening on Sunday Oct 8, 2023 at 8PM, the WISE Hall serves as the perfect backdrop for Jesse Jo Stark’s raw and magnetic energy. Known for its intimacy and incredible acoustics, the venue is an ideal choice to showcase her unique blend of rock, punk, and vintage glam that I simply love.

The Setlist: Stark kicked off other shows in the tour with a powerful rendition of “Deadly Doll,” setting the tone for an exciting night. As the event unfolded, she seamlessly navigated between tracks from her debut album “Dandelion” and newer material, keeping the audience engaged and hungry for more. “Dandelion” is a must-listen and my favourite EP from her. 

The Stage Presence: One of the standout aspects of Jesse Jo Stark’s live performance is her undeniable stage presence. Dressed in her signature dark, gothic attire, she’s full of confidence and allure that draws the audience in. Her charismatic demeanor adds another layer to her music, making Jesse a true alternative rock icon in the making.

Between songs, she shared stories and engaged in banter, creating a sense of intimacy that resonated with the audience. Fans were not just attending a concert; they were part of a shared experience. Originally from Vancouver and with a career spanning over two decades, Mangan has captivated audiences around the world with his unique blend of folk, rock, and indie tracks. Dan Mangan’s journey in the music industry began in the early 2000s when he released his debut album, “Postcards and Daydreaming.” Although it didn’t gain widespread attention, it showcased his talent for storytelling through song writing. It wasn’t until his second album, “Nice, Nice, Very Nice,” released in 2009, that he started to gain recognition. This album was a masterpiece that combined his emotional lyrics with intricate instrumentation, earning him critical acclaim and a devoted fan base.

One of the defining features of Mangan’s music is his lyrical prowess. His songs often explore themes of love, loss, and the human condition with a raw and honest approach. Tracks like “Robots” and “Basket” are prime examples of his ability to create moving narratives that resonate with listeners on a deep emotional level. “Robot” is one of my favourite songs by him and one I highly recommend for first time listeners.

He employs a variety of instruments, including acoustic guitars, pianos, and strings, to craft rich and textured compositions. Songs like “Rows of Houses” and “Sold” showcase his ability to write melodies that are as catchy as they are emotionally charged.

Mangan’s vocal delivery is another aspect of his music that sets him apart. His voice is hauntingly beautiful, with a distinctive rasp that adds depth and authenticity to his songs. Whether he’s singing softly on a ballad or belting out a powerful chorus, his voice is a perfect match for the emotional intensity of his lyrics.

As Dan Mangan’s career has evolved, so has his sound. He’s not afraid to experiment and push the boundaries of his music. His 2018 album, “More or Less,” showcased a more stripped-down and vulnerable side of him, with a focus on personal experiences and introspection. I like this album and his new sound but if I had to choose, I still prefer his older stuff that is more amped up.
