Canadian Men’s soccer team loses 2-0 to Uruguay in preparation for World Cup

The Canadian Men’s National soccer team lost 2-0 to Uruguay in their last friendly before the World Cup in Qatar.

Uruguay scored twice in the first half and never looked back. Despite the score, Canada dominated the possession 59% to 41% and outshot Uruguay 11-6.

Nicolas De La Cruz and Darwin Nunez scored for Uruguay.

The result wasn’t in Canada’s favour, but they played a strong game against a much higher ranked opponent. Uruguay will enter the World Cup ranked 13th.

Canada won their previous friendly against the host nation Qatar 2-0.

There are high hopes among Canadian soccer fans for this year’s club. Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, and Cyle Larin are expected to lead the way, but they are in tough being grouped with Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco. Those three are ranked 2nd, 16th and 24th.

The tournament is set to begin on November 20th in Qatar. Canada is ranked as the 38th best nation in the world. This will be only their second appearance in the tournament and their first since 1986.

Next up for Canada is an exhibition against Japan in Qatar on November 17th. Then they begin the World Cup on November 23rd with a match versus Belgium.

The Canadian side will be looking for their first win and goal in World Cup history. In ’86 they were shutout 1-0 by France, 2-0 by Hungary and 2-0 by the Soviet Union. Just winning a single game would be exciting for Canadian fans.

Of course, we would all like to see them advance out of the group stage, but few people expect that to happen. Hopefully this World Cup birth is only the beginning of Canadian soccer’s rise up the world rankings. Seeing their nation on the world stage will inspire a new generation of players that can one day play for their country.

Blue Jays begin three game series with the Yankees tonight

MLB playoffs are just around the corner and the Blue Jays begin their final homestand of the regular season tonight. They return home with a record of 86-67 after going 3-3 in Philadelphia and Tampa Bay.

Toronto still holds the top wild card spot by two games over the Rays and 2.5 over the Mariners.

Most of the second half of the season has been disappointing for the Yankees but they are heating up at the right time. They have won seven in a row and extended their lead in the American League East to 8.5 games.

All eyes will be on Aaron Judge as he looks to break Roger Maris’ Yankee record of 61 home runs. Stuck on 60, Judge has been homerless for the last five games.

The Yankees lead the season series over the Blue Jays 9-7. These will be the final three games between them until a potential meeting in the divisional round.

Things Worth Mentioning…

The Jays are still without Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Santiago Espinal.

Gurriel has been out since September 9th with a hamstring strain. Espinal has been out since the 22nd with an oblique strain.

Maple Leafs’ sniper Auston Matthews will throw out the first pitch at tonight’s game.

Matthews set the goal record for the Toronto Maple Leafs with 60 last season.

Roger Maris tied Babe Ruth’s home run record on this day 61 years ago.

The stars seem to be aligning for Judge to tie Maris tonight.  It would be pretty cool for him to hit number 61 exactly 61 years after Maris tied Ruth.

The head-to-head…

Kevin Gausman vs. Luis Severino

 Gausman: 12-10, 3.32 ERA, 194 Ks

Severino: 6-3, 3.36 ERA, 101 ks

Jose Berrios vs. Jameson Taillon

 Berrios: 11-6, 5.27 ERA, 137 Ks

Taillon: 13-5, 3.90 ERA, 140 ks

TBD vs. Gerrit Cole

Cole: 12-7, 3.49 ERA, 244 Ks

WHL season is underway, Giants start 0-1-1

Our local WHL team began their season with a pair of games over the weekend. They opened the 2022-23 campaign with a home game against the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Langley Event Center on Friday.

The Thunderbirds went up 2-0 in the first period thanks to goals from Gracyn Sawchyn and Brayden Dube.

With 1:30 left in the frame Ethan Semeniuk got the Giants on the board with a goal assisted by Jaden Lipinski.

Mazden Leslie tied it up with a powerplay goal in the second but the Thunderbirds took the lead again late in the period.

The Giants struck again on the powerplay in the third with a goal from Ty Thorpe. Kyren Gronick picked up his second PP assist of the night.

The game went into overtime tied at three and then to a shootout. Gracyn Sawchyn beat Giants goaltender Brett Mirwald to seal the win for Seattle.

Mirwald stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced in regulation and overtime but was 0 for two in the shootout.

On Saturday the Giants travelled south to Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, WA to take on the Silvertips.

Jackson Berezowski scored 1:44 into the first and the Silvertips held the lead the rest of the night. Everett added a second eight minutes later to double their lead.

Jaden Lipinski finally got the Giants in the game with an early goal of the year candidate in the second period.

That was about all that went right for the Giants on Saturday. The Silvertips won the game 4-1.

Matthew Hutchinson started in goal for the Giants and was pulled after allowing four goals on 19 shots halfway through the game. Brett Mirwald replaced him and stopped all 11 shots he faced.

Overall, opening weekend didn’t go as planned for the Giants with an 0-1-1 start. Next up is a match with the Victoria Royals at home on Friday.

Canucks begin pre-season with split squad games against Calgary

The Vancouver Canucks kicked off their pre-season yesterday. The team took part in split squad games with the Calgary Flames. One was played locally at Rogers Arena the other was at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

Here in Vancouver, the Canucks trailed the Flames 2-0 heading into the third period but ultimately came back and tied the game. Vasily Podkolzin scored eight minutes into the frame to bring it within one. Then with 1:31 left Conor Garland tied it up to force overtime.

The Canucks fell 3-2 in OT. Expected backup goaltender Spencer Martin started the game and allowed two goals on 25 shots. AHL starter Arturs Silovs replaced him halfway through the game. Silovs stopped 19 of 20 shots he faced but took the loss on the overtime goal by Michael Stone.

Free agent acquisition Ilya Mikheyev left the game in the second period with an injury and did not return.

The extent of the injury is yet to be reported.

The game in Calgary wasn’t as close. The Flames took that one by a score of 4-0. Goaltender Colin Delia allowed three goals on 24 shots, he played the first two periods.

Michael DiPietro relieved Delia to start the third period. He stopped six out of seven.

A pair of new Flames got the scoring started. Jonathan Huberdeau and Cody Eakin scored less than two minutes apart early in the second and Calgary never looked back.

Blake Coleman added a third goal late in the second and Brett Sutter scored in the third.

The Flames out shot the Canucks 31-19 and carried the play for most of the night. Defenceman Travis Dermott led all Canucks players with 22:49 of ice time. New Canuck and BC boy Curtis Lazar led the forwards with 19:13.

Next up for the Canucks is a matchup with the Seattle Kraken at Rogers center on Thursday.
