Justin Bieber is celebrating his 29th birthday today, March 1st.

Remember videos of 10-year-old Justin, busking on the streets of Ontario? Together we’ve watched the boy grow up. He’s been in the public eye for the majority of his life, gaining a mass following at the young age of 16.

To celebrate the once, teen-popstar’s birthday, we will be looking at the highlights of Justin Bieber’s iconic career.

Of course, we have to start with Justin’s pre-fame Youtube covers. In 2008, the young Canadian posted a cover of Justin Timberlake’s Cry Me a River and it’s so cute.

I wish I could travel back in time and protect him, he had no clue what was coming.

Justin’s debut single One Time, released in 2009. Justin was only 15-years-old at the time, and he was absolutely adorable. I cannot believe grown men had the audacity to bully this literal child.

In 2010, 16-year-old Justin performed an acoustic version of his hit song, Baby. What makes this JUNO Awards performance so iconic is that fellow Canadian, Drake joins in with an added rap verse. 

Can we make an official Justin Bieber + Drake, Baby collab happen in 2022?

In 2012, Justin claimed his laptop had been stolen and the thief was threatening to expose personal details. Then a supposed naked photo landed online and the internet went wild, searching for the rumoured image. With all eyes on Justin’s socials, a Youtube link was tweeted out by his account, which led to The Beauty And a Beat music video.

The entire scandal was an elaborate PR stunt.

It is not only iconic, but it is genius.

Recently, Justin has taken a more serious tone with the media, discussing his struggles with mental illness, fame, and his relationship with God. The Canadian popstar continues to drop major Billboard hits like Peaches (2021) STAY (2020) and Yummy (2020)

He’s been in the spotlight for over 10 years now, and there’s a lot of awesomeness the media doesn’t highlight.

Who is Julia Fox?

Ye, commonly known as Kanye West has made headlines recently with the drop of Donda 2, his Netflix docu-series Jeen-Yuhs, and his whirlwind of an Instagram presence.

Following his gripping divorce with Kim Kardashian, Kanye West was seen with actress 32-year-old actress, Julia Fox.

Julia Fox made her acting debut in the 2019 film, Uncut Gems. A Safdie brothers film that followed Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) an erratic jewelry dealer with a gambling addiction and his showroom saleswoman/mistress, Julia.

According to Julia Fox, her role of ‘Julia’ was in fact based on her. In a Call Her Daddy interview, Julia revealed that the film was in the works for 10 years, and throughout the writing process Joshua Safdie would call her and ask her what she would do in ____ situation, and then write that into the ‘Julia’ character.

But who was Julia Fox prior to being Kanye West and Josh Safdie’s muse?

Julia Fox was born in Milan, Italy but grew up in New York City with her father. She’s expressed how fast she grew up, living in Manhatten. She began clubbing and using drugs/alcohol in middle school and at the age of 16, she started working as a Dominatrix in order to support herself financially.

The actress describes her time working in a sex dungeon as her first time acting. In her interview with Call Her Daddy’s Alex Cooper, she expresses how her work allowed her to play a role, and explore her sexuality, freely without judgement.

In her early twenties, she started a successful women’s knitwear line, Franziska Fox with her friend Briana Andalore.

She’s dabbled in everything as a New York socialite. She modelled for Playboy in 2015 and published two photography books, Symptomatic of a Relationship Gone Sour: Heartburn/Nausea (2015) and PTSD (2016.)

Fox also directed a short film, called Fantasy Girls, about a group of teenage girls involved in sex work in Reno, Nevada.

Her art dives into personal topics and gives a gritty insight into the life of Julia Fox. Subject matter includes heroin use, sex work and romance.

The actress has since gone clean, after numerous overdoses and the birth of her son.

I hope Kanye doesn’t claim to have made Julia Fox famous because this actress has got a story to tell, and I’m here for it.

RuPaul’s Werq The World tour coming to Vancouver

RuPaul’s Drag Race judge, Michele Visage has found herself stuck in the past, after a time travel mishap. Werq The World will be a journey through iconic time periods and HERstorical moments, in order to find our way back to 2022.

Euphoria season 2 tragic finale [SPOILER]

Last night was our last Euphoria Sunday until 2024. The TV drama wrapped up on February 27th, in a whirlwind of a season finale.

There was a lot on the line for episode 8. Going into the finale, we knew Fez was absent from Lexie’s play, Rue owed money to a drug lord, Cassie was furious with her sister Lexie, and the Jacobs boys were up to no good.

Fans speculated a death going into Sunday’s finale, and they were not wrong.

While Fez was getting gussied up for Lexie’s play he was greeted by Custer, who was cooperating with the police to solve the murder of Mouse, who was killed off earlier in the season by Ashtray, Fez’s younger counterpart.

Custer’s ‘airheaded’ girlfriend Faye, came through in the end, during a tense scene in Fez’s apartment where she dropped her glass of water and gestured for Fez to keep his mouth shut as Custer was recording the conversation about Mouse’s death.

Unfortunately, Faye’s effort couldn’t save the day. Once Ashtray clued in that Custer was a ‘snitch’ he acted quickly with emotion and stabbed Custer through the neck.

With one strike, Fez and Ashtray’s lives were over.

Fez held the knife and pleaded with 13-year-old Ash to let him take the blame, as the police began breaking down the front door.

Ash refused to listen and gathered all his firearms with him in the bathroom, locking the door, preparing for fire.

The SWAT team abruptly entered. Fez had his hands in the air, screaming for Ash to surrender. Seeking shelter in the bath, Ash began shooting through the walls, destroying the apartment, killing officers, and shooting Fez through the gut.

Eventually, the bathroom door gets broken down and Ash shoots down another officer point-blank. No longer protected by walls, Ash is shot dead by the police, right in front of his bleeding out ‘brother’ Fez.

If this scene didn’t make you bawl your eyes out…

Sneaker Con Vancouver 2022

On Saturday, March 5th Vancouver will be hosting Sneaker Con at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

You can check out over 100 vendors selling authentic sneakers and streetwear. You’re also welcome to bring your own “hype” sneakers to show off or sell/trade. With tickets starting at $36.83.

The eBay sponsored event provides on-site authenticators that verify whether sneakers are “real or fake.”

Sneaker shopping can get pretty pricey. Some buyers have reported spending $15k on one pair of kicks at Sneaker Con Chicago (Jordan 4 Retro Wahlburgers). You’d definitely want an authenticator when you’re dropping that kind of cash.

You can expect to see labels like Jordan, Yeezy, New Balance, Nike and Adidas.

Styles that are hot right now:

Nike Low Dunks

The Nike SB (skateboarding) shoe has become trendy following the popularity of the Jordan 1 in 2020. Chunkier than the Jordan 1, the shoe provides an awesome silhouette with baggy pants. The shape is pretty much a hybrid of an Air Force 1 and a Jordan 1.

Air Jordan 4

The Air Jordan 4 is a classic 90’s basketball silhouette, even chunkier than the Nike Dunks. Air Jordans have a special place in any sneakerhead’s heart with their cultural history. The shoes were created for basketball Hall of Famer, Michael Jordan during his time with the Chicago Bulls. In 1985, Air Jordans were released to the public and have been a staple in the sports and fashion industry since.

New Balance 550

Reintroduced in 2020, the New Balance 550’s have become the world’s new Air Force 1. They give a retro feel with a classic shape that goes with any outfit. Some may say these sneakers are “over-hyped” but I think the timeless style is here to stay for another season.

With Kanye West’s resurgence in the media with Jeen-Yuhs and Donda 2, I wouldn’t be surprised if Yeezys make a big comeback as well.

 

Euphoria finale: Cassie v. Lexie

Tonight at 6:00 pm PST, the highly anticipated Euphoria season finale will be airing.

Season 2 is coming to an end, and there’s a lot in the air for tonight’s episode.

We were left with a “To Be Continued” title card over Cassie’s angered face, fogging up the window looking into the theatre after Nate broke up with her over Lexie’s play.

Directer Sam Levinson left us hanging, knowing something insane is about to go down because if we know one thing about Cassie Howard is that she will do anything for Nate Jacobs.

Cassie: Am I everything you wished for?

I would love for you to f*** me… whenever and… however you want.

Cassie’s a complex character. Unlike her boyfriend, Nate I don’t believe she’s a bad person. This may be controversial because most of the internet seems to be #TeamMaddy, but I think Cassie is a deeply traumatized and misunderstood character.

Everyone in life seeks validation, it’s just about where you get it. Cassie was blessed and cursed with a beautiful figure. Her sister Lexie receives attention and praise for intellect and creativity, while Cassie is only really applauded for her physical appearance.

Attention feels good, and if men sexualizing you is the only attention you get, you’re going to seek it.

I’m afraid of what Cassie might do to defend Nate. Her self-worth is defined by the attention he gives her, and him dumping her may only spin her deeper into her manic episode portrayed throughout season 2.

Avril Lavigne drops new album

Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne is returning to her roots, with a new early 2000s inspired pop-punk album, Love Sux.

Released on Friday the 25th, the album is getting received a lot better than her underwhelming 2019 album, Head Above Water.

Avril Lavigne’s original sound and attitude have had a huge influence on the resurgence of the pop-punk era in the 2020s.

Sure, it’s been twenty years since the release of her multi-platinum debut, Let Go. But Avril’s not going to let Machine Gun Kelly and the e-boys have all the fun in 2022. The 37-year-old Canadian is here to steal back her spotlight and claim her rightful spot, as the queen of pop-punk.

And what would a hit in 2022 be without Travis Barker?

In October, Avril is headlining alongside My Chemical Romance and Paramore at the highly anticipated When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas.

The album is high-energy with an Avril Lavigne classic formula. She knows what the audience wants and oh she served.

It’s the perfect teenage breakup album, full of “woah-oh-ohs” and heavy eyeliner. If you aren’t careful you might end up staining your pillowcase with mascara, crying over your grade 9 crush.

“Like a ticking time bomb I’m about to explode.”

Features include Machine Gun Kelly, blackbear, and Mark Hoppus, and amost all the songs on the album were co-written by Avril Lavigne’s boyfriend, Mod Sun.

The two musicians collaborated on a single, Flames back in 2021 and fans noticed the chemistry from the start. Later that year the two were spotted on double-dates with Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox.

In September 2021 the musicians became insta official when Mod Sun posted a picture of them kissing with the caption.

If Mod Sun and Avril are happier than ever, does this mean Love Sux is about our other Canadian icon, Nickelback lead singer, Chad Kroeger?

BC’s first Jollibee opens in Vancouver

Jollibee opened its first-ever B.C. location in Vancouver on Friday, February 25th.

Vancouverites lined up outside of the Granville St location for 4 hours+, for the 9:00 am grand-opening. One die-hard fan had been lined up outside since 8:30 pm, Thursday night.

The popular Filipino fast-food chain has a cult-like following, known for its Jolly Crispy Fried Chicken.

Vancouver is late to the trend, there are over 1,400 Jollibee restaurants worldwide, with outlets across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, East Asia, North America, and Europe.

Delicious fried food isn’t the only thing the Filipino chain is known for. The Jollibee (Jollibee’s mascot) beats out Ronald Mcdonald and the Burger King by a long run.

If Jollibee Vancouver is hiring for a mascot, where can I submit my resume?

Jollibee and his crew of friends have a TV series called Jollitown, which is currently in its sixth season.

I’m going to let the crowd sizes settle down before I visit the new downtown Vancouver location. But when I do get the chance to try out the chain, what am I supposed to order?

Jollibee is known for its unique menu, serving dishes like Tuna pastry, Pineapple burgers and spaghetti. This can be overwhelming for a simple-minded Canadian like myself.

A flakey buttery exterior filled with sweet creamy fruit. It’s like the tropical (and better) cousin of the Mcdonald’s apple pie.

There’s nothing better than a bucket of chicken. KFC and Churches better move over, because Jollibee’s ChickenJoy buckets are officially in town. Jollibee’s chicken is known to be more flavorful and juicy than any other fast-food fried chicken. The bucket comes with a silky-rich gravy to accompany your crispy chicken.

Big Brother Canada Season 10

A new season of Big Brother Canada is premiering on Wednesday, March 2nd.

The 16 houseguests were revealed this week.

This season we’ve got quite a few British Columbians fighting for that $100,000 grand prize.

Jessica Gowling from Cranbrook, BC (they/she)

Jessica is a 35-year-old visual artist, known for their oracle reading decks sold across the world. They describe themself as a Big Brother superfan and their strategy in the house will be flying under the radar with a “cool, calm and collected social game.”

“Creative, Curious, Queer”

Haleena Gill from Surrey, BC (she/hers)

Haleena is a Master’s student in early childhood education. The 27-year-old describes herself as clumsy and awkward, but she hopes her big heart will take her far in the house. She’s ready to be the house therapist and a shoulder to cry on.

Hermon Nizghi from Nanaimo, BC (he/his)

Hermon works as an auto sales general manager. The 29-year-old is one of the top 5 best car salesmen in Canada! As a car salesman, you have to be energetic, outgoing and most of all, convincing, which is why Hermon thinks he can bring home “100 racks.”

Millennials versus Gen Z: The Apatows

The rivalry between Millenials and Gen Z continues. This time it’s not about the fit of your jeans or the way you part your hair. This clash of the generations surrounds the Hollywood family, of Judd Apatow, Leslie Mann and their daughter, Euphoria star, Maude Apatow.

Maude Apatow has recently shot into stardom, gaining recognition from her role as Lexie in the teen drama, Euphoria. Fans have connected the glaringly obvious dots and come to realize Maude Apatow, is in fact the daughter of the famous film director, Judd Apatow.

Even if you don’t know his name off the top of your head, you definitely know his movies,

And iconic TV shows like,

Now, this is where feathers get ruffled… to teenagers, Maude is the more prominent Apatow. When teens started realizing that ‘Lexie’ from Euphoria was a ‘nepotism baby’ many 30-year-olds were taken aback by how little the younger generation knew about her famous dad.

To Millenials, Judd Apatow is the kingpin of directing comedies. His career peaked during their twenties, the mid-2000s. So for a 16-year-old to not be aware of Judd’s filmography is absolutely ridiculous! (to them)

Here’s the thing, yeah, a lot of teenagers have no idea who produced Anchorman, and nor do they care. And similar to ‘Karen’ and Ok Boomer culture, Gen Zs like to intentionally get the goat of their elders.

It’s funny to see Millenials get all riled up over such a silly topic, and pushing their buttons is even more fun. Those buttons aren’t hard to find, past debates have included wired headphones, low-rise jeans, and Harry Potter.

This Euphoria-Apatow-Mann-Nepotism-Baby drama is just another case of Gen Z making Millenials look dumb.
