How do smartphone change our way to know people

Alamy

One of the biggest difference between my generation with my parents’ one is how we meet people. They used to be very straight forward as they literally meet whoever run into them physically. It can be in a cafe, a park or a pub. For us now, it could go really wild. We connect to people at the other side of the world. We probably can’t tell how does that person look like? The world nowadays seems way more misty and foggy.

With the smart devices, people nowadays can know pretty much everything by simply staying at home. Information flow is way more automatic which algorithm feeds you what you need. One always stick with what he/she searched before, again due to algorithm. In that sense, that also make our world so much smaller where we are just open to what we have experienced. That applies to meeting new people too. People lack the motivation to go out and talk to real people. Internet gives them everything. Internet raises people up but in the meanwhile could destroy people into ash too.

People now tend to be more conservative in a sense that they “google search” people first before they actually meet or talk. The human civilisation told us that we developed our language skills from zero. And now we seem to roll back to that “we do not know how to talk” era…

Will human being really turn into alien… Small brain but extra long finger as the body will be modified by the excessive use of smart devices. Thinking about this now is terrifying and very creepy to me. This can be the best example of how human beings got fooled by its own creation…

So is there anything we can do to escape from such a control?

Let’s talk about Dunbar’s Number

BBC

Dunbar’s number holds the belief we can only really maintain about 150 connections at once.  The magic number of 150 was developed by the British anthropologist Robin Dunbar.  He was convinced that by the ratio of brain sizes and group sizes through his on-human primates’ studies. The important social behaviour of primates which are neuroimaging and observation of time spent on grooming helped mapped out the ratio.
Dunbar came to the conclusion that the size of the neocortex, which is a part of the brain associated with cognition and language, relative to the body is linked to the size of a harmonious social group. This ratio somehow tops the capacity of how complex a social system can manage.

People who have heard of the theory soon came up with the question…
Is 150 still the number after the emergence of social media?

Dunbar defended his theory again saying that there would still be other number within the social brain hypothesis too.  Dunbar 150 supports the idea that 150 is the number for meaningful contacts while the circle for people one could recognise could go up to 1500. In the meanwhile, good friends and loved ones are down to 15 and 5. This layering somehow clear the fog in the idea right?

How many connection you have in your social media sites? Far more than 150 or the other way round? Do not forget that the essence of the 150 is also about intimacy. Judging from the pure number would not be comprehensive enough. Maybe it’s time to weigh and review how do your relationships go? In the meanwhile, don’t panic if you have fewer connection than that.  Again, the consideration shall be on the quality of the relationship but not the quantity. The number is also summarised by the bell-shaped curve with a range up to 230 but not like normally distributed.

contextualising relationship may helps people understand that better as “guidelines” are given. Let us know how is your 150 going and comment below!

Have a nice weekend ahead!

What is your love language?

Language helps us to communicate with others and express ourselves and love language can help us love better. The five love language are words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. Knowing what is your type and what is the type for your partner can for sure help build a stronger healthier relationship.

1) Words of affirmation is about expressing affection through spoken words, praise, or appreciation.

2) Quality time asks for undivided attention when it comes to expressing love and affection.

3) Gifts-giving is a symbol of love and affection for someone with this love language.

4) Acts of service means a person feels loved and appreciated when someone does nice things for them.

5) Physical affection makes the person with physical touch as their primary love language feels loved.

Picking which one is yours may not be easy but the quiz here can help you out!

Learning each other’s love language is like seeing a nutritionist. You could design a better diet plan if you know what your body truly wants, For instance, if you know you need more calcium than others substance, feed them with dairy so they would be satisfied and happy. Loving the one of your life is simple yet complex. People hurt each other even though they love each other. They are just lost in showing their love to each other. They may be contributing from their own perspectives but do not look from their side too. Isn’t that miserably sad to see two people drift apart just because they love too hard?

Exploring the love language is just the first step. How you can incorporate that into the relationship is the real challenge. Are you confident in working along with your partner’s love language? What obstacles do you think there can be? Comment below and tell us more about it!!!

Are you ready for the 2022 BC Summer Games ?

Prince George would be hosting the 2022 BC Summer Games with the opening ceremony on Thursday, July 21.The city would open the door for almost 3800 participants with 18 sports item. The place will be filled with energetics youth aged 10 – 18 for three days.

“The Games provide an opportunity to showcase our community, our venues and our people,” says Prince George Host Society President Renee McCloskey. “We are honoured to welcome BC’s best young athletes to Prince George, and we are working hard to give them an exceptional experience they will never forget.”

Prince George has been hosting many other sports game throughout the years such as BC Winter Games in 1981, the Canada Winter Games in 2015 and the World Paranordic Games in 2019.  The essence of the game is to support the development of athletes, coaches, and officials as they move on to higher levels of competition in their later stage of life. It could be very helpful in paving the way for their upcoming competitive games in the future.

Volunteer engagement and mentorship are also the highlights of hosting large-scale sports games.  Volunteering for sure can build the sense of community which might be absent for the past three years due to COVID. The 2022 BC Summer Game can really be the time that bring everyone in the community back together.

Mentorship could be the thing for you if you are good at sports and in the meanwhile hope to inspire some young boys and girls. Mentorship is not necessarily to be something big and grand. It could be just motivating people to step out of the comfort zone or encouraging them to try again after that fail. It is especially true for this game as the participants are all the shiny and upcoming generation in Canada. Not all make it to the international arena but every single athlete must have their own story of growing and learning. Mentorship could help them write a page of two!

Still planning what to do in the summer and this could be on your list!

Can you actually live without a car here in Vancouver

Wired

As the one that who doesn’t have a license yet, I may be the expert on this topics.

More and more people, especially the young adult, are re-thinking about this driving option.  Gas price rise, the wait for shipment , parking lots and traffic are only the few problems could come up when talking about this.  Could public transport really replace vehicle ownership?

Gas price rose to the headlines last month and owners can’t really say a thing but pay for it right? Owners cannot generate gas to replace that and become completely dependent on it.  Gas shortage also happened last year in November too. Its supply is unstable and probably uneconomical. Oh but one step backward, how long do you have to wait to get the car? Because of COVID, the line for that looks endlesssss. Depending on your locations and models, customers may have to wait for 6months. Well maybe good things take time right?

CBC created this interactive map that shows the costs to park at meters and city-run EasyPark lots and parkades throughout the downtown core.  The one near the Vancouver Convention Centre is the most expensive. Those near Cordova and Burrard streets is $6 an hour, even $7 an hour at the nearby EasyPark lot.  Can you imagine how much flying out of pocket just for parking? Public transport is not free but maybe a bit lower than that. Not able to find the spot also stress me out even though I am not the driver… You cannot just drop your car and run right. After you squeeze through the peak hour traffic and find no parking, isn’t that a great start of a working week.

Let’s be honest, can buses and skytrain help?

For a person like me who live on my U-pass, buses and skytrains are my dear friends. Affordable yet not very reliable unfortunately. It strengthens my patience and preparedness as I always have to be very adaptive to the ever-changing bus schedule. I wonder how could the buses still be late when we are right at the terminal. Isn’t that amazing.

After all these “rational points”, owning a car may just be a status quo to some people. Doing that makes them feel better or it’s their habits. They may be raised up in the family that everyone drive o

Thinking about what’s happening in the neighbourhood?

Do newspapers really tell us everything? I mean E V E R Y T H I N G.
Probably not right?

Too much could happen during the day and they could never capture them all and put them together.  This is where the local smaller media outlets could help to fill the gap. I tried to summarise the few options I usually go for when I need the community information.

Although I live in Vancouver, I do spend a good amount of time in Burnaby coz BCIT is thereeeeee. Burnaby Beacon is the first one that I found online and I actually enjoy it more day by day. I subscribe to their newsletters and sometimes they do provide some good inspiration for content creation. I like how they forecast what’s happening in the community and what activities we shall not miss.

Burnaby Beacon

Generic one I would recommend 604 Now as they cover a few more cities in the Lower Mainland, from Vancouver to Abbotsford.  You can also just browse through category (such as events, culture, food etc) if you are wide open for ideas. Their rich content could drag you to stay for at least a half day to figure out what to choose.

604 Now

With the introduction of the World Wide Web, people are getting limitless information every  single day and trying to stay away from that is an issue now.  More and more people talk about social media detox.  It can help empty your mind for a while and give the priority to our own lives. We’ve got to think a bit but not living on what the Internet feeds us. Social media fatigue or feeling overwhelmed seem to be a new topic to explore in the modern world. How the technology manipulates the users is also a huge debate to dig in. Isn’t that creepy to learn how your devices actually control you by algorithms. Sometimes I feel like it’s a war between human and AI as we are now trying to fight back its control.

Conformity is the thing to note when socialising but we shall all respect each person’s opinion on using social media. Feel free to dig in the options provided above or just live your life in the way you want~~~
