Digging Deep: Metric

I’ve attended BCIT for over a year and have tuned in to our radio station (Evolution 107.9) many times since I first enrolled in the program! It’s been fantastic hearing classmates on the radio and songs from the various bands who get played on the station. Near the end of last year, I even got to be on the radio, providing an hourly sports update – which was lots of fun! I have always been interested in the different kinds of bands played on our station and the ones that could make our station. I want to look at one band in particular! Join me as I learn more about Metric.

Metric is a Canadian rock band that was formed in 1998. The band was created in Toronto, Ontario, and is known for its blend of indie rock, new wave, and electronic music elements.

The band’s lineup has had some changes made over the years. Still, it has included individuals like Emily Haines (vocals, synthesizers), James Shaw (guitar, synthesizers), Joshua Winstead (bass guitar, synthesizers), and Joules Scott-Key (drums).

The band has been in action for over two decades and has released multiple albums and singles since then. Metric has gained popularity for its energetic live performances and hits like “Help I’m Alive,” “Gold Guns Girls,” and “Breathing Underwater.”

Some of the band’s music has been featured in films, TV shows, and commercials, which is pretty cool. I always love watching TV and movies with songs made by bands and singers. This will often contribute to a band’s recognition, which it certainly has done in the case of Metric.

Metric has received lots of attention and high praise for its music. It has been nominated for and won various awards, solidifying its place in alternative and indie rock.

The more I learn about this band and the individuals who have made it what it is, the more interested I become. I love digging deep into the things that are around me, and music played on BCIT is something that surrounds me! Supporting Canadians is also never a bad idea!

I’ll leave you with some of my favourite lyrics to their song “Just the Once,” which you might be able to hear on the BCIT radio station if you tune in! The music video for this song also has over 200,000 views on YouTube! Soon, it’s a race, a rush, and a high. Steal an embrace; it starts with one little lie. Try once again to redefine now and then before once becomes once in a while.

Digging Deep: Braids

I’ve attended BCIT for over a year and have tuned in to our radio station (Evolution 107.9) many times since I first enrolled in the program! It’s been fantastic hearing classmates on the radio and songs from the various bands who get played on the station.

Near the end of last year, I even got to be on the radio, providing an hourly sports update – which was lots of fun! I have always been interested in the different kinds of bands played on our station and the ones that could make our station. I want to look at one band in particular! Join me as I learn more about Braids.

Braids is a Canadian band, and I love it! The band was formed in 2007 in Calgary, Alberta, and is known for its unique and experimental sound. The band’s lineup has evolved over the years, but the core members have included Raphaelle Standell-Preston, Austin Tufts, and Taylor Smith.

Braids is fearless in experimenting with its music and genre-blurring qualities. The band will often incorporate indie rock, electronic, and dream pop elements. Their unique sound and intricate songwriting have done a great job of helping them gain recognition.

Braids received lots of attention for their debut album, “Native Speaker,” which was released in 2011. Tracks like “Lemonade” and “Plath Heart” received critical acclaim and helped establish the band’s presence in the indie music scene.

Some of their other notable albums include Flourish // Perish (2013), Deep in the Iris (2015), and Shadow Offering (2020). All of their albums seem to push boundaries and set new standards in the music industry. Electronic elements, intricate production, innovative and atmospheric sound, and emotionally charged themes, with a focus on vulnerability and intimacy, help the band stick out.

Braids continues to make a name for itself in the music industry. Our radio station at BCIT loves their Peach Wedding song, and you can hear it next time you tune into our radio station!

The more I learn about this band and the individuals who have made it what it is, the more interested I become. I love digging deep into the things that are around me, and music played on BCIT is something that surrounds me! Supporting Canadians is also never a bad idea!

I’ll leave you with one of my favourite lyrics from their song Peach Wedding, And oh, I’ll treat you better this time. I will love you more than anyone has before.

Digging Deep: CHASE THE BEAR

I’ve attended BCIT for over a year and have tuned in to our radio station (Evolution 107.9) many times since I first enrolled in the program! It’s been fantastic hearing classmates on the radio and songs from the various bands who get played on the station. Near the end of last year, I even got to be on the radio, providing an hourly sports update – which was lots of fun! I have always been interested in the different kinds of bands played on our station and the ones that could make our station. I want to look at one band in particular! Join me as I learn more about CHASE THE BEAR.

One of my instructors at BCIT has his podcast (Todcast Podcast) and was able to meet this group and do an interview with its members! I was invited to attend the recording, but unfortunately, I could not. I can’t wait to learn more about them and see what I had to miss out on.

Chase The Bear is a Canadian rock band formed in Fort St. John, BC, but now rocks the streets of Vancouver, BC. Chase The Bear is gaining traction in the music industry, especially in the Canadian music scene. The band is known for its energetic and bluesy rock sound, and they have released music that has received positive reviews from both fans and critics. I knew there was a reason why my teacher loved them! He was excited to meet them and told me about his great experience.

The band mixes catchy hooks, roaring electric guitars, and hard-hitting rhythms inspired by classic rock with soul and pop influences. Chase The Bear has put on a robust catalog of performances exceeding a hundred shows, and their journey included a memorable sold-out performance as the opening act for The Trews at Vancouver’s legendary Commodore Ballroom which is pretty cool!

The band was formed in 2015, so they are still pretty young. Brothers Troy and Leo Gilmore, alongside childhood friends Connor Brooks and Braedan Royer, relocated from Fort St. John, B.C., to get the band on its feet! This move was inspired by their goal of pursuing music as a career. Pursuing music is a common goal shared amongst people in the entertainment industry, but only some are willing to relocate to try their hand at this industry. It’s also impressive that two brothers are in the group, as not many siblings could work together!

I recommend visiting their official website, exploring their social media profiles, or checking out recent news articles to keep informed on this up-and-coming band!

Digging Deep: Broken Social Scene

I’ve attended BCIT for over a year and have tuned in to our radio station (Evolution 107.9) many times since I first enrolled in the program! It’s been fantastic hearing classmates on the radio and songs from the various bands who get played on the station. I have always been interested in the different kinds of bands played on our station and the ones that could make our station. I want to look at one ban in particular! Join me as I learn more about Broken Social Scene.

I recommend visiting their official website, exploring their social media profiles, or checking out recent news articles to keep informed on this up-and-coming band!

Broken Social Scene is a Canadian indie rock band formed in 1999 in Toronto, Ontario. The band always seems to have people come and go from in, and that’s why it’s known for its ever-evolving lineup. The band’s collective approach has allowed it to create a diverse and dynamic sound.

A sound that orchestral arrangements, intricate song structures, and a mix of different musical styles can characterize. Broken Social Scene has also been associated with the Toronto indie music scene, known as “Broken Social Scene Presents,” which includes various musicians and bands.

Some of the leading members and founders of Broken Social Scene are Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning. Although the band’s lineup has changed over the years, it has included numerous talented musicians, many of whom have pursued successful solo careers or played in other notable bands. These prominent musicians include Feist, Emily Haines (Metric), Amy Millan (Stars), Jason Collett, and many others. Those singers have helped the band release new albums and put on shows.

Some of the band’s most popular albums are “You Forgot It in People” (2002) and the self-titled “Broken Social Scene” (2005). Those albums helped establish the band’s reputation in the indie music scene.

It’s common for the band to incorporate indie rock, post-rock, and experimental pop elements, and many fans love them for doing it! Their complex arrangements, emotional depth, and communal approach to music-making help them stick out.

The band has taken time away to stop making music in the past, but they still put on energetic live performances, where the stage can be filled with a rotating cast of musicians, making each show a unique experience. That’s pretty cool!

The more I learn about this band and the individuals who have made it what it is, the more interested I become. I love digging deep into the things that are around me, and music played on BCIT is something that surrounds me! Supporting Canadians is also always a good idea!

Music Notes

Fix You – a song full of hope.

Coldplay is coming to BC Place on September 22nd and 23rd, and even though I don’t have tickets to either of their shows, I am still very excited! I am a massive fan of the band and know the words to a few of their songs, but “Fix You” is my favourite one.

This song by the British rock band was released in 2005 as part of their album “X&Y.” It’s an emotional song that has resonated with many listeners over the years, including me.

Another reason why I love the song so much is because it is the theme song for the NHL’s Montréal Canadiens. The Canadiens are my favourite hockey team, and I enjoy listening to that song as they hit the ice to start each of their home games.

The Canadiens are the most historic franchise in all sports, so I think it’s cool that the organization chose “Fix You,” considering all the other songs they could use! The lyrics to the song are great, but the instrumental version is also extraordinary.

“Fix You” is full of energy and emotions! The song conveys comfort, support, and healing. I’ve always pictured the theme relating to individuals going through tough times, feeling lost or broken,  and needing someone or something to guide and motivate them. These are all emotions that we feel from time to time.

I have watched videos of the band performing the song in venues worldwide, and it always seems to give me chills! I hope to experience the music in person.

The song presents a sense of empathy and a desire to provide comfort. The lyrics express that even when someone is going through their darkest moments, they are not alone, and there is hope for a brighter future. The chorus contains the iconic lines:

“And I will try to fix you.”

These lines show the singer’s commitment to being a source of strength and support for the person they love. As the song progresses, it intensifies with strong instrumental and vocal performances that strengthen its emotional impact.

Overall, “Fix You” is a moving song that connects with listeners because of its message of compassion and the idea that even in difficult times, there is the potential to get better and receive support from loved ones. I can’t get enough of this song!

I hope they get to play this song for the sake of their fans, who will be watching the band in concert!
