Friendsgiving & Pumpkin Spice

Can you believe it’s already October? Well, that means it’s that time when everything is Pumpkin Spice flavored and that time when Canadians prepare for the ultimate food coma – Canadian Thanksgiving! So, grab your maple syrup (it’s on everything), and let’s talk turkey… literally.

First things first, Canadian Thanksgiving isn’t just about indulging in a cornucopia of delicious dishes; it’s about giving thanks for all the good things in our lives. It’s like a giant nationwide gratitude party! And what’s a party without food, right?

Now, speaking of food, the star of the show is usually a beautifully roasted turkey. It’s the centerpiece of our Thanksgiving feasts, but hey, not everyone is into meat. Some people go for a classic ham, roast beef, or even a vegetarian main course, my personal favorite. The point is to gather with loved ones and share a hearty meal, no matter what’s on the menu.

Of course, we can’t forget about the sides, those creamy mashed potatoes, savory stuffing, cranberry sauce, roasted veggies, and, something more personalized to my taste, Pumpkin Spice flavored everything! We’re talking, cookies, pastries, ice cream even. And let’s not overlook the pies! Pumpkin pie, apple pie, pecan pie, you name it, we’re baking it. It’s the season of pie overload, and nobody’s complaining.

And let’s not forget about drinks, ahem- Pumpkin Spice Latte- ahem. While some might reach for a good ol’ glass of wine or beer, others prefer a cozy cup of hot apple cider, complete with a cinnamon stick. And for the non-drinkers or designated drivers, there’s always sparkling cider or some festive mocktails to sip on.

Here’s a twist – many international students who can’t make it home for Canadian Thanksgiving, or are having their very first Thanksgiving, like myself a year ago, often celebrate a modern tradition known as “Friendsgiving.” It’s like Thanksgiving, but with a diverse, multicultural twist. Friends gather, bringing their favorite dishes from their home countries, creating an international buffet of flavors. It’s a beautiful way to share traditions, stories, and delicious food with friends who’ve become a second family.

And what is superior to the food? the comforting sensation of being surrounded by family and friends as they laugh, share stories, and express gratitude. That sentiment is what makes Thanksgiving in Canada so unique.

The best thing, though? Leftovers! The day after Thanksgiving, nothing compares to Roasted Butternut Squash Risotto the day after. It’s like a holiday inside of a holiday.

Because of this, Canadian Thanksgiving is all about honoring thankfulness, community, and, of course, indulging in some amazing dishes, whether you’re a turkey lover or you prefer a Friendsgiving potluck. So let’s toast a glass (or pumpkin spice latte cup) to a time of warmth, appreciation, and delectable food. Grab a plate and pile it high. Happy Thanksgiving to all Canadians and non-Canadians who are enjoying and giving thanks today!
