B.C. Music Scene – Billy Bragg

Can you guess who’s headlining the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver B.C. on Friday, September 20? It’s none other than Billy Bragg. The location is 868 Granville Street and the ticket prices range from $63 – $78. “Who’s that”? Well, I’ll explain, he goes by Stephen William Bragg and he’s an English singer, songwriter and musician. He can also be considered an author and political activist. His music genres consist of folk music, punk rock and protest songs which is very Interesting. Being a super political artist can hinder your career and prevent you from growing since people can be stubborn and not accept others opinions and views. Do you think that publicly showing your political views as an artist is a good move? His lyrics also consist of romantic themes. Most of his political views center around social change and left-wing political causes.

His love for music started a while back when he developed an interest for poetry at age twelve. He also learned and practiced the guitar which I feel definitely gave him the confidence to evolve and innovate his talents to singing and even more songwriting with his skills from poem writing. He was also exposed to folk and folk rock music during his teenage years which could’ve inspired him to make music of that kind.

As for his career, Bragg formed a punk rock band called Riff Raff with the Wiggy which is definitely a goofy name and is hard to take seriously but since this was his first time doing this, it was all good. They recorded their first series of singles in 1978 which didn’t receive that much success, or at least not as much as they wanted. Bragg then rebranded himself quite a bit even changing up his hair and became a solo artist which then, he found success. He became more of himself and his fans love him for being his true, authentic self.

B.C. Music Scene – Paul Weller

Can you guess who’s headlining the Vouge Theatre in Vancouver B.C. on Friday, September 20? It’s none other than Paul Weller! “Who’s that”? Well, I’ll explain, he’s an English singer and songwriter musician born on May 25 1958. He rised to fame with the band “The Jam” in the late 1970’s. But don’t think he disappeared into irrelevancy, after the end of “The Jam” in 1982, he changed his style and had even more success with the band “The Style Council” in 1983. But, “The Style Council” came to an end in 1989 which meant that Weller was a solo artist. You may think that he joined another band or found another partner to make music with. That was not the case, Weller instead established himself as a solo artist and released his debut album in 1992 titled “Eponymous”.

Many people criticized Weller as a singer, lyricist and guitarist but he’s still remained a national star, loved by many. Weller also writes his own music which is incredible! He takes inspiration from English Society when writing his music and coming up with lyrics. For example, many of his songs had lyrics about working class life which is great and relatable to many people.

Many of his early fans and even newer fans are excited to see him perform on September 20 and jam out to his hit songs. Some recognizable, popular songs of his include: Rise up singing, You do something to me, Nothing and I woke up. These songs mostly have music videos tied to them so it makes the experience much more interesting!

B.C. Music Scene – Johnny Marr

Johnny Marr will be headlining the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on September 20th. If you’re unfamiliar with them, allow me to provide some brief backstory. Johnny Marr better known as Johnny Martitn is an English musician, singer and songwriter. He became relevant when he was a guitarist for the band “The Smiths” who were only active for a short period of time before ending the band. Since then, Johnny has performed with many other bands and started his solo career. It’s always great when I see people in a popular band find success on their own. It shows their unique solo talent and skills and also takes them out of the shadow of their bandmates and gives them an image of their own which they could turn into a brand and grow even more. Having your own identity is also crucial when creating a name and fanbase for yourself. A band that comes to mind when I think of separation is Fifth Harmony. They were a group of five talented girls but they sadly separated. The first to step out was Camilla Cabello who was kind of bullied out of it. After leaving, she skyrocketed on the charts and had a stable solo career unlike her other bandmates.

Focusing back on Johnny Marr, let’s take a look at his songs both in his solo career and in his bands: There is a light That Never Goes Out, Back to the Old House, How Soon Is Now, I’ll Stand By You and “I’m Spider-man”. It shocked me when I first saw that he was in the song “I’m Spiderman” from the movie “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”. Being featured in a movie that big is insane and really shows how successful you truly are. It’s always an honor for an artist to have a song featured in a movie with such high class IP’S. Another interesting fact is that the songs from the band “The Smiths” are mostly written and co-written by Johnny Marr. I guess his pen work is very strong. Whenever I see artists that write their own music it grants them respect in my heart, I just admire it and notice the talent.

Johnny Marrs first solo piece of work was his album “The Messenger” in 2013. His second album “Playland” was released a year later in 2014. Both albums were decent, nowhere near perfect but they had some great songs that resonated with fans. Personally, they weren’t my cup of tea.

B.C Music Scene – Nick Mulvey

Have you listened to the EP, “The Trellis”? It’s a banger and the artist behind that masterpiece was coming to British Columbia. That’s right, Nick Mulvey is on tour and he was planning to stop at our hometown on Tuesday, September 17. Many fans of his in the lower mainland were looking forward to seeing Nick live but sadly, he canceled the concert. It was going to be held in the Hollywood Theatre on 3123 West Broadway. It’s unfortunate for all the fans that were looking forward to seeing their favorite artist perform. I remember when I booked my first concert tickets in 2018 to see Nicki Minaj. I was so excited to see my favorite songwriter live, but unfortunately she canceled the concert and hasn’t been to Vancouver since. So, I empathize with fans of Nick.

If you still don’t know much about Nick Mulvey, allow me to provide some backstory. He was born on November 4, 1984. He’s an English Musician, songwriter, and singer who was also once in the band “Portico Quartet”. He started his long, successful career in 2011 and a year later he released his first full body of work via an EP being “The Trellis”. From the first few opening songs in this EP you could already sense his love and passion for music which could be a reason why he was so successful throughout his career. When it comes to music I can sense whether a song or album is a filler cash grab. Many artists just use music to make a quick buck and don’t care about their craft or the genre. Thankfully, Nick is one of the few who seem to make music just for the love of it. This is very evident in many of his songs.

Speaking of his songs, let’s talk about them to help you get more familiar with him. Some of the ones that I’ve found noteworthy are: Fever To The Form, A Prayer Of My Own, We Are Never Apart, Star Nation, In Your Hands, Mountain To Move, and Begin Again. These songs all have a great meaning and even a music video to tag along with it. I love when artists release music videos, it’s another way to connect with the artist and the song to create a better meaning and connection. It also proves that the artist is willing to spend money to give their fans an awesome visual.

You know what’s sweet? Sweet Loretta will be coming to Vancouver with Kishi Bashi. They will be performing live in The Pearl, playing their diverse catalog of songs and interacting with fans. Sweet Loretta are a band of 5 however, Kishi Bashi is a solo artist who started his solo career in 2011. Since then I believe he’s been dominating the scene. Kishi Bashi also got recognition by Bob Boilson in 2012 where he was crowned Favorite New Artist. Additionally, his songs were featured in television advertisements which was great for his image and definitely put his name out there in the public. Some noteworthy songs of his that I suggest checking out are: “Manchester”, “In Fantasia”, “Violin Tsunami”, and “A Song For You”. Kishi Bashi definitely worked hard throughout his years to brand himself and make a name for himself, now he’s touring the nation with his passion!

B.C. Music Scene Concerts

The police are scary but you know which one isn’t? The Tokyo Police Club. They are a rock band from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada which is quite ironic but their music is just too good! The first time I listened to this band was when I visited their debut EP “A Lesson in Crime”. Not only were the songs great but the title and theme of the album was awesome. I love it when artists have a whole album rollout that suits their brand. For example, Megan Thee Stallion and her newest self titled album. It had a snake theme throughout including the album art, music videos and lyrics. The Tokyo Police Club also stayed within their brand and played along with the police theme. This band will be coming to Vancouver, B.C. on September 14 in the Commodore Ballroom.

The iconic rock band, “Loverboy” is coming to Delta, B.C. in the Barnside Harvest Fest. This band consists of five guys who are all born and raised in Calgary, Canada. I really love it when I see Canadian bands get the recognition specially the ones who have such great talent and songs but are so underrated. Yes, that’s right, I believe that this band is underrated! You should definitely check them out. This band was extremely popular in Canada and the U.S. due to their iconic singles: Working For The Weekend and Turn Me Loose. I gave these songs a listen and they are definitely interesting. It’s not really my style of music and what I listen to on the regular basis but it has its own charm and I could definitely see why fans of this band fall in love with songs like these. Perhaps, when I hear it live it will catch my attention more!

Make way my friend, Sophie Ellis Bextor is coming to Vancouver, B.C. She will be performing in the Commodore Ballroom located on 868 Granville Street. This gal is best known for her single “Murder on the Dancefloor”, which is quite an intimidating title to a song but it’s kind of sick! Her debut solo album “Read My Lips” was released in 2001 and she’s been releasing creative hits ever since. Her punchlines are great and her lyrics are definitely something you need to go back to , to fully understand. After releasing that album she turned into a household name, gaining thousands of fans around the world. Many say her live performances “oozes confidence” , which is always a green flag when it comes to live performers.

Social Distortion is coming to Vancouver, B.C. they will be performing live in the Commodore Ballroom located on 868 Granville Street. “Who are they?” You may ask? Well, Social Distortion is a band that formed in 1978, yeah! They are quite antique. In 1983, the band released their debut album “Mommy’s Little Monster” which gained the band worldwide recognition and fame. It was clear that these guys were unstoppable, they were featured in documentaries, and were also on popular TV channels like MTV which is incredible! Luckily, the band wasn’t one hit wonders. Their follow up album “Somewhere between Heaven and Hell” was a huge commercial success which gained them even more recognition. A noteworthy track on that album was “Bad Luck” which peaked at number 2 on the Modern Rock Track charts. Man, these guys were on fire! I wonder what they sound like live…

Have you heard the news yet? The Barnside Harvest Festival is coming! It will be taking place on September 13 till September 15 in Paterson Park, Delta. One of the star bands that will be performing are “Sloan” who formed in 1991 and are an alternative rock band. Their debut EP “Peppermint” released in 1991 on their very own label “Murderecords”. I’m always so curious why rock bands are obsessed with murder but hey! It sounds cool…Soon later the band released their debut album “Smeared” which gained lots of success as well. The band is referred to as “true professionals” by fans and have lots of great stage presence. I guess we may have to check it out and see if those claims are true! The only concerts that I’ve went to were rap, which were awesome so I’m very curious to see how different genre concerts are like.

B.C. Music Scene – King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Kishi Bashi, Two Door Cinema Club

We’ve heard of a Wizard, but have you heard of a Lizard Wizard? If not, allow me to introduce you to “King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard”, a rock band formed in 2010 from Melbourne, Victoria. They will be performing live in Vancouver, B.C. in the Pacific Coliseum on September 12. After doing some research I found out that this band has 26 studio albums which is absolutely insane! They work very hard to give their fans great music. However, 26 studio albums makes me question how good this music actually is. I guess I may have to visit this concert to find out. Another crazy fact is that in 2017 this band made and released five albums which I believe is a bit excessive but if that’s their passion, more power to them. Some album titles that really caught my eye were: “I’m in Your Mind Fuzz” , “Paper Mâché Dream Balloon” , “Murder of the Universe” & “Infest the Rats’ Nest”.

Do you know Micheal David? Well, he’s a musician who is also known as Passenger. He’s a British folk rock singer and songwriter, well known for his song “Let Her Go”. To provide some background to our boy Micheal, he played music through England and Australia after leaving school due to his incredible passion for music, which I love for him.
