Jags At Hawks

This Sunday the Seattle Seahawks play host to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 1 pm PST window and this game holds heavy importance for the rest of the Seahawks season. With Russell Wilson being out for the past 2 weeks and again for this week’s game, the Seahawks have struggled offensively and with a loss this week to the Jags the season is all but over. A loss here would result in Seattle being 2-6 which would mean the team would have to win all 9 remaining games to reach 11-6, which in the NFC is the standard that most teams need to make the playoffs. Winning out isn’t an easy task however as the Seahawks still face tough competition in the weeks ahead. Facing top teams like Green Bay in week 10, followed by the Cardinals in week 11 and week 18, as well as the Rams in week 15. So with their backs up against the wall, this is the time the Seahawks must win.

So how do the Seattle Seahawks matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars? Well, if Russell Wilson set to start the game there wouldn’t be a doubt in my mind that the Seahawks would come out with a win. But, unfortunately, that isn’t the case. Geno Smith will be the man under centre come Sunday and so far Geno hasn’t been able to come out with a win. In the past few weeks the Seahawk’s defence has improved… still not playing great but an improvement. This will be the key for this match-up, as Geno and the offence haven’t been able to put points up on the board. So, if Seattle’s D can stand up and stop rookie quarterback Trevor Lawerance and James Robinson out of the backfield then the Seahawks should have a real chance.

If the Seahawks D can hold strong the offence still needs to put points on the board to win. Since Russell Wilson has been out Pete Carroll has been focusing on the running game, which worked well against the Pittsburg Steelers where Alex Collins rushed for 101 yards on 20 attempts but failed the following week when Collins could only rush for 35 yards. The upside to this is that Jacksonville is below the league average when it comes to defending against the run. With the Seahawks defence coming through and the running game going strong Seattle should have enough to overcome the Jags and win a must-win game.

Vancouver White Caps Playoff Push

The next couple of matches for the Vancouver Whitecaps are important, as the team sits in the middle of the playoff picture at 5th place in the west only slightly ahead of their competition. Currently, the Whitecaps are standing with 47 points, closely followed by the LA Galaxy with 46 points, the Real Salt Lake and United FC with 45 points and the Los Angeles FC with 44 points. All of these teams have a real shot of ruining Vancouver’s playoff dreams, dreams that have not been met since 2017.

The first of the Whitecaps final two matchups are against the Los Angeles FC on November 2nd. This is the most important of the 2, with a win essentially eliminating Los Angeles and loss putting Vancouver up against the wall in the final matchup of the season against the already playoff-clinched Seattle Sounders. The good news is that Vancouver is 1-1-0 going up against Los Angeles FC as they look to keep a goose egg in the losses column.

The tougher of the 2 matches come on the closing night of the MLS regular season as the Vancouver Whitecaps travel down to Seattle to take on the Sounders at the ever-so-loud Lumen Field. This matchup is set to be considerably more difficult for the Caps as they are yet to win against the Sounders this season only going 0-1-1. A hope would be that Seattle clinches home-field advantage before this match-up and pull key players to rest them for a championship push.

If the Whitecaps are able to crack the 50 point barrier it would be the first time they can do so since 2017. This would be mainly due to Vancouver’s interim head coach who has helped the team go 6-2-3 since taking over 11 matchups ago. A playoff appearance would be an amazing bounce-back story for a team that has struggled in recent years. But, for now, Vancouver’s playoff hopes rest in nobody’s hands but their own.

What’s Going on in Seattle??

What’s going on in Seattle??? The question that is ringing in fans’ ears has their Seattle Seahawks, who had SuperBowl aspirations to start the season fall to 2-5 through 7 the first 7 weeks of the NFL season. Well to answer that question simply the team has run out of luck. In the 2019 and 2020 seasons the Seahawks went 23-9 and out of those 23 wins the Seahawks won 16 of them by only 1 score. All of these wins were led by franchise quarterback Russell Wilson who has 27 game-winning drives since entering the league in 2012 and has never missed a game in that same time frame.

Through the first 4 weeks of the season, the Seahawks were  2-2 which was less than an ideal start. However, the fault of these 2 first losses mainly falls on the defence who couldn’t stop opposing offences if their lives depended on it. Then came week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams where Russell Wilson hits his hand against 6 time all-pro defensive tackles, Aaron Donald, causing the star quarterback to have 2 injuries to his middle finger on his throwing hand. An extensor tendon rupture is commonly known as mallet finger and a comminuted fracture-dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint. Russell received surgery on his had the following day and was allocated to the team’s injured reserve list.

The Seahawks went on to lose that game bringing the team’s record to 2-3 and in the weeks to follow would slip down to 2-5. Losing both games by one score. So how does Russell Wilson’s injury relate to luck?? Well, here it is… Russell Wilson has held the Seahawks up, he’s worked magic with a terrible offensive line, a weak running back room and a defence that hasn’t been able to leave the field since what feels like 2016. So with the man behind those 27 comeback wins and those 16 games won by at least one score or less out. The Seahawks have been forced to show their true colours of a below-average football team.

Canucks vs. Flyers

The canucks started the first period off rough, allowing a goal by Sean Couturier just 22 seconds into the game. Quinn Hughes and the Canucks quickly bounced back with a goal through traffic just under 2 minutes later. The Canucks went to physically dominate the rest of the first period. Commanding the face-off circle winning 13 of 18 as well as laying 20 hits compared to the flyers 4. The Canucks struggled to get pucks on the net only getting 4 shots compared to the flyers 15. With 13 minutes left in the first, the Philly winger James van Riemsdyk scored a power-play goal bringing the score to 2-1. Canucks trail going into the second.

A spirited scrap between Luke Schenn and former Canuck Zack Mac Ewen broke out leading to a Canucks power play. The Canucks power play failed to score but did create a few chances which brought the Vancouver tempo up a level. With 9.5 minutes left in the second, the Canucks got another power-play opportunity because of a Philly cross-checking penalty. However, the Canucks couldn’t capitalize on the power play despite getting a couple of shots on goal. With 3 minutes left in the period captain, Bo Horvat was charged with a tripping penalty sending the flyers to the power play. The flyers weren’t able to take advantage of the power play like they did earlier in the first, only managing one shot on goal. The Canucks came back from the lack of offence in the first period with 16 shots on goal in the 2nd compared to the flyers’ 5. This while the Canucks added 15 hits and continue to dominate in the faceoff circle average 61%. Even though the score dictates differently, the pendulum has swung and the Canucks have the momentum going into the third.

Just 5 minutes into the third the Canucks move to the power play and continue the trend of not producing any goals with a man advantage. Again with 10 minutes left in the 3rd, the Canucks moved to their 4th power play of the game, when just one minute in Elias Petterson was called for holding, bringing the game to 4 on 4 hockey, yet still no success. Finally with a minute and 20 seconds left the Canucks went onto the power play for the 5th time of the game which again came and went without a goal. The game came to a close with the Canucks losing 2-1. The storyline for this matchup came down to Vancouver’s inability to produce on the power play. The Canucks won in the faceoff circle, physically dominated with 41 hits and tied with the flyers with 28 shots apiece. Philadelphia’s ability to produce on one of their power-play opportunities is the main reason why the Flyers got the win tonight.

Elton John

How long does it take to go down the yellow brick road? Welp, it feels like it’s been taking forever and I’m not even exaggerating, Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour started on September 8th, 2018… Yup 2018. On October 21st, 2022 Elton will be back in Vancouver for the second time on this tour.

http://www.instagram.com/p/CQtp8M6oFx3/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Elton originally was planned to start the second half of his tour that was already delayed by the Covid-19 on September 28th, in Denmark but due to a hip injury, he was forced to reschedule all events for the rest of 2021.

“At the end of my summer break, I fell awkwardly on a hard surface and have been in considerable pain and discomfort in my hip ever since. Despite intensive physio and specialist treatment, the pain has continued to get worse and is leading to increasing difficulties moving. I have been advised to have an operation as soon as possible to get me back to full fitness and make sure there are no long-term complications. I will be undertaking a program of intensive physiotherapy that will ensure a full recovery and a return to full mobility without pain.”

Despite his recent injury Elton has still been cranking out the tracks and is coming out with an album of sorts called The Lockdown Sessions where he works with a variety of different artists including Charlie Pluth, Dua Lipa, Lil’ Nas X, and Stevie Nicks. The “album” is set to be released in just under a week.

Despite what feels like the longest wait for Elton John to come back to Vancouver, having a set date in sight gives fans something to look forward to. Even if it is over a year away.

The Boom Booms are Boom Back Baby

The Boom Booms are back baby!!! That’s right for the first time in a little over a year The Boom Booms are going to be performing live. On November 10th at The Hollywood Theatre. I originally found this band earlier in 2021 while covering the BC music scene and instantly fell in love with their sound. It’s safe to say that their first album Hot Rum! which was originally released in 2011 was in a steady rotation in my summer playlists.

http://www.instagram.com/p/CSUvIbppqy5/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Despite not creating any new music together since releasing their single Que Te Parece in 2019 members of the group have still been active in the music industry. With lead vocalist Aaron Ross releasing his own single Abrázame back in August and bassist Geordie Hart playing in the jazz group Malleus Trio.

With The Boom Booms having travelled all over North America and parts of South America. Cruising around the United States twice in a school bus and making the full round trip from Vancouver all the way to Panama. It’s safe to say the band loves touring. So, with the Covid-19 vaccine rollout going strong across Canada it’s no surprise that the bad has started performing again. Hopefully, the November 10th show is the first of many and we can start seeing The Boom Booms again in settings like their 2019 performance at the Constellation Festival.

If you want to follow The Boom Booms so you can listen to their music, or getting tickets for their next show you can follow them on Facebook, Instagram, Apple Music and Spotify.

Still Woozy

Still Woozy or Sven Eric Gamsky is an American indie R&B artist hailing from Oakland California. Still, Woozy went viral after dropping his single Goodie Bag in 2017 and has since dropped 8 other singles and EP’s as well as his most recent album If This Isn’t Nice, I Don’t Know What Is. Still Woozy starts up his debut album tour If This Isn’t Nice on January 12th, 2022, and by March 5th he will make his way to The Vogue Theatre here in Vancouver, before hopping over the pond for the European part of his tour.

Sven started off his career by releasing the single Vacation and Cooks in early 2017 before the release of Goodie Bag which became a streaming hit with currently over 220 million streams on Spotify since 2017. Still Woozy continued to drop singles until he released the 5 songs 13 minute EP Lately in May of 2019. Lately contained the song Habit which has since become his second most listen to the song with just under 125 million streams on Spotify.

Still Woozy’s sound is definitely a unique one. With a mix of electro-pop and indie, his songs create a sense of chill hanging out vibes. This along with his calm and subtle delivery of the lyrics create quite an interesting sound. It’s hard for me to put my finger on what exactly Still Woozy would bring to your playlist other than just good vibes. Before Still Woozy is set to come to Vancouver you can listen to him on Spotify as well as following him on Instagram.

Shawn Mendes

He’s finally coming, it may be almost a year and a half from the release of his album Wonder  Shawn Mendes is headed on the road for his Wonder tour. First starting off in Europe before finally heading to North America and on July 2nd, of 2022 Shawn will be here in Vancouver at Rogers Arena.

The Canadian-born artist from Pickering Ontario has come a long way since his days of posting song covers songs on Vine back in 2013. By May of 2014, Mendes signed with Island Records and by mid-summer, Shawn released his first single Life of the Party which proceeded to make Shawn the youngest debut to debut in the top 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100. From there the ball only kept rolling as Mendes would go on to release his first album Handwritten which held the song Stitches which would go on to peak at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first top 10 single in the US.

Three years later Shawn released his Album Illuminate in 2017. Where the songs Treat You Better and There’s Nothing Holdin Me Back would go on to reach 1.4 and 1.1 billion streams each on Spotify. With the massive success of Illuminate and these 2 songs, it was only 1 year later with the release of Señorita on the deluxe edition of his self-titled album Mendes hit new heights with Señorita reaching just shy of 2 billion streams on Spotify.

Despite having to wait over nine months for Shawn Mendes it’s still great to finally be able to see him in concert once again.

Said the Whale

The Juno-award-winning indie rock band Said the Whale is set to release their first album since 2019 followed by their first tour since the Covid-19 restricts essentially shut down the live music scene almost 2 years ago. The album is entitled Dandelion and five of the nine songs on the album have already been released including 2 crowd favourites Sweetheart and 99 to the Moon which already has over 100,000 streams on Spotify alone. Aside from the nine songs on the album three music videos will be released to Honey Lungs, Everything She Touches is Gold to Me and Show Me Everything all of which have already been released.

Said the Whale got their start back in 2007 with the release of their first EP Taking Abalonia which was then re-released again back in 2008 as a full album with 7 new songs. One album, two Ep’s and four years later the group won the Juno Award for New Group of the Year Award in 2011. Since then the band has released 4 studio albums which have all graced the Canada Top 100 list.

Said the Whale is used to hitting the road and touring, doing so for most of their 14-year career. So the Covid-19 induced break lead to the group being able to take a step back from touring and focusing on new music, saying on their website that…

Singer-songwriters Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester, plus keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown and bassist Lincoln Hotchen, threw themselves fully into working on new material with producer Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat) at his Tugboat Place Studio, resulting in the most towering, maximalist music of their careers.”

With that being said it will be great to see Said the Whale, back in action live as they set off for their tour on November 2nd, tackling the western United States before hitting the Canadian east coast and finally back out to western Canada and Vancouver on March 24, 25, and 26.

Playboi Carti at the PNE

Playboi Carti started off his Narcissist this week in Nashville and will be in Vancouver at the PNE Forum on November 15th. The interesting thing about Playboi Carti and this tour is that it was supposed to succeed Carti’s new album Narcissist which was teased to be released on September 13th but that is yet to happen. In a tweet from September 15th, Carti shared a screenshot of a text conversation saying “FORGET ABOUT THE SAMPLE CLEARANCES. DROP NARCISSIST”. So it will be interesting to see what Playboi Carti performs on his album tour that doesn’t yet have an album.

Playboi Carti started out onto the music scene in Atlanta with his two first singles Broke Boi in 2015 and Crumbs in 2016 before coming out with his self-titled mixtape in 2017 Playboi Carti. Carti’s first mixtape brought 2 of his most successful songs Magnolia with just shy of half a billion streams on Spotify and wokeuplikethis which has just over 350 million streams on Spotify.

Just one year later in 2018 Playboi dropped Die Lit which carried the hit song Shoota featuring Lil Uzi Vert. Cardi has since released his album Whole Lotta Red and has worked with a variety of artists including Kanye West, Drake, Tyler the Creator and Future. To keep up with Playboi Carti you can give him a follow on Instagram, Twitter and Spotify so you can keep an eye out for the eventual release of Narcissist.
