As we all know, online shopping has become significantly more popular since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nobody wants to leave their house, we were quarantined for a couple of months, bored in the house and in the house bored, there’s a lot of heightened anxiety, and let’s face it, I think we’ve all gotten a little lazier. Okay, maybe a lot lazier. Who wants to go to the chaotic shopping malls for birthday and Christmas gifts when there’s frankly no reason for it anymore. This year, Amazon orders have gone through the roof! In fact, the company actually brought in 74.5 billion dollars in sales revenue in only the first quarter of 2020. So, with that being said, I thought it would be a cool idea to discuss the most purchased items this year. Keep your eyes and ears open because you might also just get some Christmas present ideas. Here we go!
Electronics
Items from the electronics category were the most popular buys in 2020. New gadgets and technology are consistently evolving and when people are bored, we constantly look at electronics to entertain us these days. The top three electronics ordered this year are (in no particular order):
- Alexa TV Remote
The Alexa TV Remote is a remote-control device that features Amazon’s Fire TV platform and allows voice assistance through Alexa for controlling your TV’s power and volume! This just makes being lazy in 2020 even easier. Cool right?
- Alexa Echo Dot Smart Speaker
By now everyone must know what this is. Amazon Alexa Smart Speaker listens to your voice and follows your commands. You can even set her up to turn on/off the lights and play your favourite radio station. “Hey Alexa, play Evolution 1079.” Thank you.
3. Fujifilm INSTAX Mini Film
Ever seen those cool little polaroid photos that have recently made a come-back? Well, this is the film for those cameras! I can see why the film would be a more popular purchase, I guess.
Video Games
Considering quarantine was causing us to basically never leave our house, video games became pretty popular as well. Not that they weren’t already popular, but you know what I mean. The top purchases in the Video Game category are (in no particular order):
- PlayStation Store Gift Card
Who doesn’t love getting gift cards? That way you can buy whatever you want and not have to worry about buying a gift someone may not like, or more importantly, receiving a gift you don’t like! Anyway, pretty straight forward. PlayStation is fun.
- Donkey Kong Nintendo Switch Game
I can’t be the only one who’s heard all the rants and raves about this Nintendo Switch gaming console. Now, I don’t play many video games myself, but the hype about “Animal Crossing” this year definitely piqued my interest. But this isn’t about that, this is about Donkey Kong! So, congrats to Donkey Kong for being the most ordered Nintendo Switch game on Amazon this year.
Clothing, Shoes, and Jewelry
Now, this category’s top purchases really made me laugh. Not because they’re strange items. Just because they fit so well with the whole pandemic theme we’ve been living in this year. Dying to hear what they are? Okay fine, I’ll tell.
- ODODOS High Waist Yoga Pants
Okay for one, does this not sound like a knock off of Adidas but with O’s? The other reason I find this funny is because everyone has been so lazy this year, of course, yoga pants were one of the top clothing purchases of 2020. But for real, no judgment here, I’m sure they are great pants, and I love yoga.
- NativeJefferson Slip-On Sneakers
Let me just say, I have never seen these shoes before, and I was okay with that. At least they look comfy. These shoes are similar to ‘Crocs’ in a sense, with the plastic-style and holes. They also come in many bright colours so that’s pretty cool as well. Comfort > fashion in 2020 am I right?
- i play. Baby Boys’ Flap Sun Protection Swim Hat
Not going to lie, this one surprised me a bit. Not that babies don’t need their sun protection; it just seems like a random item to be one of the top purchases. But hey, like I said, no judgment here. The hat itself is cute and looks perfect for a little baby on a 2020 summer day.
Camera & Photo
In the Camera & Photo category this year, it features a top purchase that is also featured in another category! Can you guess what it is? I can’t give it away that easily! You’ll just have to read it in the next line.
- Fujifilm INSTAX Mini Film
You guessed it! The film that’s more popular than the camera itself! Whoever purchased these must be taking a lot of awesome photos. I mean, who doesn’t love polaroids anyway? Shake it! Especially if they were able to at least do a little bit of BC exploring this year.
- Fujifilm Instax Camera
Ah, here it is. The camera we’ve all been waiting for. These adorable cameras come in a bunch of colours and are portable to make sure you can take the perfect pictures everywhere you go. Maybe a good Christmas gift? Just giving ideas!
