Does Anyone Even Have A Clue When Demko Will Be Back?

Whenever the Vancouver Canucks take the ice at Rogers Arena, local fans often feel like one familiar name is consistently missing from Al Murdoch’s legendary starting lineup announcement.

That missing presence belongs to 30-year-old net-minder Thatcher Demko. In his last full season, Demko was voted as one of the Vezina Trophy finalists. Since then, however, he has transformed from Vancouver’s franchise backstopper into the city’s greatest athletic mystery. Placed once again on injured reserve, and fans really don’t have a full clue as to when he’ll be back between the pipes

It is not rare for an NHL goaltender to sustain a lower-body injury over the course of a demanding career. Whether it’s a hip, knee, groin, or lower-back, almost every net-minder faces setbacks in these vulnerable areas. What deeply frightens Canucks fans, is that Demko has endured all of these.

After posting a phenomenal 35–14–2 record with a .918 save percentage in 2023–24, Demko was sidelined during Game 1 of the playoffs by a rare popliteus muscle injury in his knee. That setback initiated a relentless string of misfortune. Over the following two seasons, he battled through repeated knee strains and back issues before taking an extended leave of absence in January 2026 to undergo major hip surgery in Denver. It was a procedure he explicitly termed a “drastic measure” after making just 43 starts across two years.

Yet, Canucks fans frustration regarding these constant absences has rarely been directed at the goaltender himself, but rather at the constant bad luck he cannot seem to escape.

As the 2026–27 campaign unfolds, his recovery timeline remains a constantly moving target. Management recently revealed that the organization hopes to have Demko back before Christmas, but emphasized that there is no guaranteed date on the calendar.

When addressing media inquiries regarding return expectations, Canucks general manager Ryan Johnson pushed back against having a set timeline:

“I’ve said all along with Thatcher, we’ve never really been operating on timelines,” Johnson stated.

Without their star net-minder taking full team reps at practice, Vancouver has been forced to rely heavily on Kevin Lankinen to manage the workload. Although Lankinen has struggled through a rocky start to the campaign, fans recognize the heavy burden placed on a backup net-minder.

A fully healthy Thatcher Demko could only do so much for a Vancouver roster as they enter a rebuild. Nevertheless, his eventual return would be an undeniable upgrade. For a roster working to tighten its defensive structure, having a former Vezina finalist holding down the crease provides an immediate boost of confidence to the club’s developing core. Until that day arrives, Canucks fans will simply be forced to wait patiently.
