The Return Of This Canucks Player Is Coming Sooner Than You Think

Ten months after the blockbuster trade that sent shockwaves across social media, the Vancouver Canucks greatest defenseman returns to British Columbia.

On October 25, 2026, former Canucks captain and 2024 Norris Trophy winner Quinn Hughes will step back onto the Rogers Arena ice. Except this time wearing the forest green sweater of the Minnesota Wild. What has many Canucks fans radiating in excitement for this matchup, isn’t just that they’ll get to see Quinn Hughes, but also that they’ll get to express their true feelings for him, whether good or bad.

It’s hard to reopen the wound that Canucks fans got in December 2025 when Hughes was traded. When past management moved Hughes to Minnesota in exchange for a massive, direction changing, package featuring Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren, Zeev Buium, and a 2026 first-round pick, that turned into Adam Novotny.

Hughes spent seven seasons as the number one defenceman in Vancouver, racking up 432 points in 459 regular-season games and establishing himself as a true cornerstone. He was viewed as the cornerstone of the team that captured the 2024 Pacific Division title with 109 points and pushed to Game 7 of the second round. Watching him skate out of the visitor’s tunnel instead of leading the home rush will be a surreal sight. But what could be even more surreal is the divided reaction from the over 18,000 fans in the arena.

Towards the end of Hughes’ tenure with the Canucks he noticeably lacked effort and seemed uncaring in his interviews. This, plus him telling management he wouldn’t resign had Canucks fans feeling like someone they loved turned their back on them. Since the trade many Canucks fans have ridiculed Hughes, referring to him as “Quit Hughes”.

Since landing in Saint Paul, Hughes has been every bit the dynamic, playmaking engine the Wild envisioned.

Through his first 48 games with Minnesota, Hughes put up 53 points while also giving Wild fans a show in the playoffs when he had 15 points in just 11 games.

When JT Miller played in Vancouver following his departing trade from the Canucks he was given loud boos from fans but given respectful cheers during his video tribute. While JT Miller did also leave on messy terms with Canucks fans, Hughes may see even more of an angrier response. Fans held Hughes to a higher standard as captain and felt he betrayed them. At the end of the day, Canucks fans will ultimately have the choice of their response on October 25.
