How Are Your Resolutions Going?

For me, March is the time of the year where I look back on my resolutions that I made for the new year. I mean it’s spring, a new season, everything is blossoming, it’s a good time to reflect right? But it never really seems to work out how I intended when I made the list last December….

New Year’s resolutions. That magical time when you pretend you’re going to reinvent yourself overnight, fuelled by champagne, confetti, and a vague sense of hope. Fast forward to March, and things start to look a little… different. Remember when you woke up on January 1st, ready to take on the year, probably a bit hungover, but determined to make the day count and get on track to becoming this new and improved new you? Yea. So do I. But it seems to me every year those promises, resolutions, and goals I made for myself last maybe until mid February. March is like the awkward third wheel of the resolution process. January is all about ambition, February is when reality sets in, and March? March is when you quietly sweep those resolutions under the rug and pretend they never existed.

So herçe are my resolutions this year word for word: “more hobbies, 10k steps a day, less buying, less doordash, complete dry jan, be less anxious, drink more water”. So a quick recap on how these are all going, I have no new hobbies. Zero. Nothing new going on over here. I actually maybe do reach my 10k steps a day just because I have an extremely active golden retriever that needs at least 3 walks a day, I just forget to check. I haven’t really bought anything crazy or done any shopping but if I had a full time job that one would probably be out the window. Doordash is probably one of the most used apps on my phone (draining my bank account). I did a complete dry January, every single day alcohol free. I’m an anxious mess. And I’m definitely living in a constant state of dehydration. So yea, that’s how it’s going for me, could be worse though!

Let’s start with everyone’s classic resolution: hitting the gym. Let’s be real. Saying you’re going to get up at 5am everyday and run a 5k before work just isn’t realistic. Unless you’re some super human with super motivation and determination, I just don’t see how that’s possible, especially if you’re working a full time job or in school. Every gym on the planet experiences a population boom in January. It’s like Black Friday, but for treadmills  By March, the crowds have thinned out considerably. The personal trainers who were once booked solid now wander the weight room looking for the last few stragglers and the gym is no longer a battle zone at 5pm.

Then there’s the other piece in the whole health and wellness puzzle. Eating clean. I don’t know about you but I just can’t let a good sweet treat go to waste. January was all about kale smoothies and meal prepping. Trying to increase protein intake by 50% and take all those vitamins just isn’t something that I can do long term. Personally, I’m more of a look in the fridge and grab and go type of person, I’m lucky enough if I have time to actually cook a breakfast. February rolled around, and suddenly “treat yourself” became a daily mantra. By March, I’m making St. Patrick’s day themed treats and getting ready to consume unholy amounts of green beer. But hey, at least I’m getting my greens in right?

Every year I say it’s my year to save my money and make my money. But guess what, I’m a student, and I truly think it’s impossible to stay financially smart as a student. Coffee, yes, that’s a need not a want for me in the morning, so $5 went there, lunch on the go is usually spent and of course, I can’t say no to Friday night plans with my friends at the bar! That “no spend month” that you said you would do at the beginning of the year has now turned into  “treat yourself Tuesday… and Wednesday… and Thursday” but I’m not judging. Girl math has never been used as much as this year, and that to me is very concerning.

January is also when people vow to learn something new. I never add learning something new to my list. But it seems like a lot of my friends added “learn French” to theirs this year and let me tell you, the duolingo streak lasted until February and I think the only big takeaway is “Bonjour”, but good on them for trying. Maybe you picked up a new hobby, like knitting or baking. Good for you! Or maybe you bought all the supplies, used them once, and now they gather dust in a corner while you binge-watch Netflix. Again, no judgment.

Ah, the promise of a clean, organized home. Or the Sunday reset trend. I think the one resolution that has really stuck with me is the Sunday reset. There’s something about having a clean room to wake up to on a Monday morning knowing that your room is clean, week is planned out, and laundry is done, it’s kinda bliss and it stuck with me, yay! But I did write down to do a closet clean out and that still has yet to happen, but we are only 3 months into 2025 there is still plenty of time left for that!

I think March is a good time to take a hard look at your resolutions and either double down and get at er or quietly just let them fade away. I do think people put wayyyy too much pressure on themselves for huge changes to be made when in reality they are all just mostly trends on social media. I just wish I would remember this by next December because I know every year without a doubt I sit down and get ready to write my new list of things that I think will “change my life”. But if you’re still at it and staying strong, good on you! So here’s to the resolution-keepers, the resolution-forgetters, and everyone in between. Whether you’re still crushing your goals or just surviving day to day, you’re doing great. Happy March, friends. 3 months down and 9 months left to make 2025 your year.
