Microtrends.
Something that comes and goes quickly. Looking back on 2024 there were a lot of these small little trends that catch on quickly then die off right away. Small frame glasses, fur jackets, different variations of water bottles, even bell bottoms and flares surfaced for quite a bit! But they would come in for a couple weeks or months and then soon enough the next thing would pop up, time to break out your wallet, buy this thing that you maybe will wear a couple times until the cycle repeats itself. What a waste of money! Not to mention all this over consumption and production that hurts mother earth!
Admittedly, I’ve definitely fallen for a lot of these quick microtrends (as I sip out of my Stanley water bottle) and I would say I’m influenced easily, when I see something I like on someone else I’m pretty quick to act on purchases however this 2025 I’m looking to steer away from microtrends and I have a couple of reasons why.
Now to reiterate, I’m no saint when it comes to my shopping habits with these microtrends, I’ve just become a little bit more self aware recently and really trying to make some positive changes.
First of all, just because something looks good on someone else does not mean it will look the same on you. It’s a harsh reality when you see a perfect model in low rise jeans and you buy a pair and it’s not the same (shocker) (been there) but this a pattern I see myself falling into alllll the time. I mean I want the jeans to work and look good so I can be a part of the trends but somethings are just not meant to be, afterall The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is just a movie.
As much as it is cool to be in with the “cool kids” and the trends, I don’t love wearing the same thing as every other girl. And really, how many girls have you seen in uggs and jeans and a black puffer jacket? So many. And sometimes I buy something that isn’t even my style! It’s just in! I’m actually glad I’ve had these realizations – I’m over trend culture!
With emails, posts, reels, and ads constantly in your face telling you what the next best thing is to buy it can be tempting to fall into the trend trap but this year to combat this issue I saw myself always falling into last year I’m honing in on wearing and buying what makes me feel good and happy regardless of what may be currently “in”.
