You know who’s been holding it down in the Vancouver music scene for years and still dropping some of the most fire tracks? Scott Morgan, aka Loscil. If you’re into electronic music that’s equal parts ambient and thought-provoking, you’ve probably heard his work—or at least should have!
Loscil is Morgan’s long-running project that’s been blending genres like ambient, classical, and electroacoustic for over 25 years. He’s released most of his music through the well-known label Kranky and has built a body of work that takes you on a journey—whether you’re zoning out with the haunting Endless Falls or getting lost in the dreamy soundscapes of Monument Builders. And his latest album, Chroma (with Lwarence English), really shows how he’s still pushing boundaries after all this time.
What makes Loscil stand out is that he’s not just making albums and calling it a day. Scott’s work spans into everything from film and TV soundtracks (like The Corporation and We Are Witnesses) to contemporary dance productions. Plus, he’s even dipped into the video game world, creating music for indie games like Osmos and his own generative music app, Adrift. It’s not just music—it’s a whole vibe.
And yeah, he’s got collaborations under his belt that would make anyone envious, including working with legends like Ryuichi Sakamoto and Daniel Bejar. He’s also part of High Plains, a duo with cellist Mark Bridges, that dropped an album called Cinderland back in 2017. Talk about versatility.
If you’re not hip to Loscil yet, now’s the perfect time to dive in. His latest project Colours of Nature, a collab with Lawrence English, is a beautiful mix of soundscapes that’ll take you somewhere else. Or if you want to start with some of his earlier bangers, give Endless Falls or Motoc a spin and see why this guy’s been a staple in the scene for so long.
While he doesn’t have any shows lined up right now, it’s always worth keeping an ear to the ground because when Loscil performs, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss. Stay tuned here for updates, and until then, dive into his discography—you won’t regret it!
