Digging Deep: Weezer

I’ve attended BCIT for over a year and have tuned in to our radio station (Evolution 107.9) many times since I first enrolled in the program! It’s been fantastic hearing classmates on the radio and songs from the various bands who get played on the station. Near the end of last year, I even got to be on the radio, providing an hourly sports update – which was lots of fun! I have always been interested in the different kinds of bands played on our station and the ones that could make our station. I want to look at one band in particular! Join me as I learn more about Weezer.

Weezer has been making great music since they were formed in 1992. They are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California. Many people know Weezer for their catchy and often alternative rock sound. They have a nice blend of power pop, punk rock, and elements of pop culture. They also have some clever lyrics.

Their self-titled debut album, commonly called the “Blue Album” (1994), is often considered one of the greatest alternative rock albums of the 90s. Some of Weezer’s most popular songs are “Buddy Holly,” “Say It Ain’t So,” “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Island in the Sun,” “Beverly Hills,” and “Pork and Beans,”  which happens to be one of my favourites! These tracks have helped make Weezer a dominant band.

The band has dropped multiple albums over the past decades, including three in three years from 2008-2010. That’s a lot of music getting made quickly, which is crazy! The band’s debut self-titled album, often referred to as the “Blue Album” (1994), and their second self-titled album, also known as the “Green Album” (2001), are considered some of their most iconic works. Each album has a unique style and sound.

Weezer has released numerous albums over the years, with many quirky music videos, often featuring humorous and pop culture-inspired visuals. The band has continued to tour and release new music, solidifying their status as an enduring presence in the rock music scene, and they have maintained a dedicated fanbase.

The more I learn about this band and the individuals who have made it what it is, the more interested I become. I love digging deep into the things that are around me, and music played on BCIT is something that surrounds me! As Weezer would say – a little bit of love goes a pretty long way!
